I think swords were expensive, and therefore more seen in graves as a status symbol, more so than axes...axes probably were both utensils and weapons, and owned by common men. As a blacksmith I can tell you - a sword is much harder to make than an axe, if you use old-fashioned hand tools - the handle, hilt and pommel are additional works of art, so is the sheath and the fittings for the belt
