Now in the latter decades of my life, the truth of the presence of God’s Kingdom is becoming more real to me. As I live and walk each day, I find I am immersed in it. Listening to scripture presented as you do feeds my soul. Thank you so much, brother.

It is always the intimacy of this passage that hits me right between the eyes. Through Jeremiah we are hearing from a God who truly does care about us and want's us as God's people. This passage for me is a great accompaniment to psalm 139 - no matter where we try to go and hide God wants us bad enough to come find us. Such a powerful love that, for me, can only be compared to the love my mother had for me. She loved me even when I was "bad", it did not matter what situation I found myself in, she was always there for me. That is how this passage makes me feel.

Thanks for this moving reflection, Autumn. We agree, Psalm 139 would be a great companion reading. How wonderful that our God loves us and desires us as family.

This really has been helpful. As God's chosen, people, we are responsible and accountable, not entitled. We are a people in exile, resident aliens called to BE light, not flashlights railing at the darkness! Judgement (aka setting in order) has to start in the house of God, among us people who should know better, who presently, as Tom puts it, are a major part of the problem yet privileged to be God's instruments of solution. Wow!

This is a really good summary. We appreciate the way you phrased this, and the flashlight metaphor! Now it's to us to find the wise ways of doing that judgement among ourselves, as you say.

Thank you for another wonderful vignette. For some time I would see this passage as perfunctory. "Of course God forgives us." Grace can sometimes become "old hat" and we lose that fresh feeling. I think especially when I have undergone difficult suffering or rejection I begin to doubt God's love and grace. So, this text and your exegesis, ever reminds me of the true reality of God's loving grace.

What a great reminder. I'm sure many others experience those same rhythms of doubt and hope.

Love this! This passage sparks a message of hope on God's part. But this hope will come at a price: God's own life whose sacrifice and resurrection will bring healing both to Israel and to the nations

I love it when scripture is put in a contextual format and so makes one feel "there." Needless to say, I live by and in and through this New Covenant, and LL my sin have been forgiven. Thank you Prof. Wright

That's the goal of context. There more we can feel 'there', the better we can understand the application for our own lives today. Thanks for being here with us.

Jeremiah 31:33 NRSV But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told his disciples; "John 14:26 New Testament for Everyone 26 But the helper, the holy spirit, the one the father will send in my name, he will teach you everything. He will bring back to your mind everything I’ve said to you.

And poor Jeremiah holding on to this promise while he watched Nebuchadnezzar and his henchmen carry away Jerusalem, her people and the temple in pieces, did not live to see it, as Hebrews 11:13 says: "...seeing and welcoming these things from a distance."

@@NTWrightOnline I think you are so right, about the difficulty knowing something is destined to be different, as promised by God - and yet not here yet. It is sort of like the recent movement in the war in Ukraine, everyone knowing it had to change, praying it would change and then waiting and waiting. Suddenly there is a breakthrough, and we say, "I knew that would happen!" Of course, that is probably not the greatest example because God's plan is a whole lot longer than a military campaign, but it is sort of the same.
