Social media allows us all to have a voice, but sometimes you're just better off keeping your mouth shut and scrolling on by. As vinyl records become more popular the trolls and snobs inevitably emerge and interject a negative, condescending tone in the discussion. Here's a few examples of "snobbish" behavior I'd love to see come to an end.
✶ Talking About Records is presented by NTX Vinyl, a local, independent, chain of community based record stores in the DFW area.

I've been into vinyl for over 40 years and the issues you point out are in direct relation to the creation of the internet and social media. I can honestly say this type of negativity was unheard of when I was starting out. There was no "community" to follow or join just local friends who spent time with each other pursuing the same interests. The best part was the weekly listening parties to hear what everyone else had acquired. That's how we learned by actually interacting. Today you can be a critic from afar. Great video! 👍

Recently discovered your channel and have been binge watching it quite a bit. Of the many extremely helpful and well-presented videos you've done this one is among your best. My collection dates back to original purchases from the 60's through the 80's and more than satisfies me. I rarely buy records now and I've never bought a record online, however I just bookmarked your website and intend to browse it with the intention of supporting your efforts. Thanks for doing what you do.

I was at a music store a few months back and the young store clerk asked, "Why do you old people (I'm 72) care so much about vinyl? I replied, "I like having to get up from my chair to change the record every 15-20 minutes. I don't care if I can't carry it in my pocket, I have a 5th gen Ipod for that. I love the sound of vinyl, the occasional click is fine by me. Sure my stuff wears out, as it turns out I'm wearing out". I'm non apologetic, as I told my wife when she asked why I bother with the medium, "I love what I love and am not ashamed of it". I don't try to sell anyone on vinyl and I"ve never considered myself a snob...just an average guy.

I can't say I'm guilty of any of those things 🤷‍♂️ As far as cheaper stereo equipment, I just scroll past unless they are specifically asking about the equipment (Hey guys! I'm thinking of buying this Crosley record player from Walmart. Is it any good?) My biggest pet peeve is people who crap on others regarding exactly where they purchased their records. People who purchase records from Walmart and Amazon seem to be the biggest targets for trolls. Yes! In an ideal world, everybody would purchase their records from local independent record stores, but that isn't always possible. Some people aren't lucky enough to have easy access to an independent record store. Sometimes it's a matter of convenience. Sometimes it's a matter of price... But it really doesn't matter where you buy your records as long as you're buying them. And it's not like Walmart records are of any lesser quality than the ones available at independent record stores. Walmart does not have their own record pressing plant. I don't remember people making such a big deal about where other people purchased their records back in the 1970s or 1980s or even the 1990s. Nobody really cared if someone else bought records from K-Mart or Sears or Zellers or wherever they got them.

Well said. My only comment is I hate calling this a hobby or collecting. I love music and grew up listening to records then some tapes (short lived) and later CDs. I mainly listen to vinyl or stream in the car. I still have my CDs and will die before I get rid of them. I do pay attention to the mastering and the sound from that. It does matter.✌️👍

Well said, William, I agree. Thumbs up. I'm going to post this thing about pops, and clicks on the Internet again! Snap, Crackle, and Pop, can be caused by Static Electricity! It is Static Electricity especially during the Winter Season that can also cause noise from a vinyl record! I grew up in the 1960s to the nineteen eighties; my favourite eras of rock, pop, and a bit of rhythm and blues. My favourite music goes to the end of the 1980s, early nineteen nineties. Although I did not get back into listening from records until the late 1980s, and a couple of years afterward, I recently became aware about static electricity that can cause noise more than a couple of years ago. Static electricity is more prevalent during the winter months. I am aware that you may know about this phenomenon, and problem about most records, William. However, there are a lot of complaints about noises about the playback of a record, but as I said above it could also be static on the record. You can have a completely clean record, without any scratches, but it could be static electricity that can cause noise! Apparently younger, and maybe older vinyl music listeners are either ignorant, intolerant, a bit lazy, or are real misers; or all of the above things. Those are the audio aficionados who are complaining! Such a listener from playing back a record won't get themselves a device that can remove, or at least greatly reduce the amount of static on a record.🔉 🎼🎵

My pet peeve, younger record store clerks who are unfriendly because of my age (65)and what I’m buying. I am willing to have a conversation about music with anyone. And guess what, I have the disposable income to buy the records I want. It’s disheartening to watch a clerk talk with a younger shopper and barely give me the time of day. Absolutely agree! There were a couple of long standing used record stores in San Diego that I simply stopped going to primarily due to the young, 'Hipster', and extremely unfriendly, snotty attitudes of the ones who were working there (the inventory had gone down quite a bit too...) There is a nice used record store closer to me (about 7 miles or so) where the same thing is true of the younger ones working there. I mean, I don't bloody expect them to welcome me with open arms (besides, who the hell knows *WHERE* those arms have been! 😲) but, just from a frigg'n business aspect, do you think it would kill them just to be at least superficially friendly...? I just try not to let it bother me. What was really nice was that just this one day when I went in there, there was this really young guy who normally wasn't there. But, what a difference in attitude. He easily conversed and offered suggestions and his opinions when asked. It make the whole visit SO damn much more enjoyable. I told him that too and how his nice attitude was in EXTREME contrast to the others who worked there. Sadly, he was just filling in for someone and doesn't regularly work there. Oh well... They still have GREAT records there though, as I THINK I may have mentioned either in this thread or one of NXT's others 😊

Something I learned about records this year: black vinyl IS colored vinyl. Because the raw material is colorless. So saying „colored vinyl sounds inferior to black vinyl, because it’s colored“ doesn’t make sense^^ I just enjoy „colored“ vinyl, maybe with nice splatter, a bit more, just because of the aesthetics and I always try to get a nice colored limited edition of new releases.
@markmorrow3250
@markmorrow3250 2 жыл бұрын
This is my understanding as well. The one thing that I read that could hold some water is that the additives for the different colors can change the properties of the record and could impact the sound in some way. But this could be from the land where conspiracy theories live as well. Just because it sounds possible doesn’t make it true.

About 4 years ago now, I did buy an Okki Nokki system and it's taken all this time to go through my collection (about 4,000 pieces). Some may find it laughable but I feel that I've bonded more with my collection by cleaning, inspecting, and re-sleeving each and every one. Great video. What a breath of fresh air from the videos trying to tell me I can’t enjoy Miles Davis without thousand dollar speaker cables. I used to listen to my uncle’s jazz collection in my teens (I’m from ‘63) and discovered pre Elvis Rock’n Roll a few years later. My first record player was cheap, probably with a set needle pressure of to much and with matching cheap speakers. But I played those records daily and really enjoyed the music. Seven years ago I rediscovered the vinyl records I inherited from my uncle and my owns rock ‘n roll records. I bought a vintage Pioneer record player/amplifier combination and some reasonable quality compact speakers. Nothing fancy, but with a reasonable cartridge and new needle. Now I enjoy a record a day after work and it takes me right back to many good memories. I’m slowly expanding my collection with Jazz, swing and some more modern stuff without any strategy other than the pure joy of feeling the music. Thank you for putting the vinyl listeners personal enjoyment back where it belongs: In the center, regardless of budget, time or space.

Pieter..... You must took the words right out of my mouth! 👍 You know what's so funny about this? When Page's reissues first came out, all the music forum regulars were really happy over how wonderful they sounded. Everyone was giving the reissues complimentary reviews. You can still read these comments on the Steve Hoffman forum and in other forums if you dig back in time a little. Now fast forward about 5 years or so later, when most of these same people came to realize that the reissues MIGHT have been remastered DIGITALLY, they were raging about how badly the records sounded and insulting Page left and right. A 180-degree turnaround. I want to slap all these snobs upside the head for being so stupidly hypocritical. I've been a mega Zep fan for 40 years and have several different copies of the UK originals and older LZ record pressings that I've been listening to for decades... When I listened to these reissues, I was hearing the finer details in the music that I've never even heard before. I was smiling from ear to ear. I was, and still am, very impressed with Page's remasters. The sound clarity and instrument separation is excellent. There is not a single turd in the whole bunch. I see these same fools all over the internet saying the most disgraceful things about the reissues and about Page himself. It's disgusting. The overly exaggerated way they rant about them makes me wonder if they'd just crawled out of a padded cell. It's that bad! What a farce it has become. And 'Stairway To Heaven' came out in '74, huh. The doofus is 3 years off.

Hi again. To me, it's is all about the music. I have some records that are so old and worn they sound terrible, but I just love them. Sure they probably aren't worth 2 cents, but it doesn't matter to me. Something about the actual music moves me. Unfortunaly, you will find snobs in every field.

I'm an orig press guy, but realize some reissues can sound better. I always like to encourage new collectors, reissues can start a collection. Digital vs analog - I'd rather it was analog, but in lieu of not having it at all, digital sourced works. Record Store Day is the best thing that happened to vinyl and indie stores in general. Back circa 2003, indie stores were dying, because CDs were on the way out and the 12 people who bought vinyl in those days weren't keeping their doors open. Can you imagine telling a 2003 store owner there would one day be a day people will wait in lines for 6 hours to buy a new vinyl? They would have said you're nuts.

My gripe..... I am new to Discogs, but I am 55 and still collect LPs. I am not new to technology either, just new to Discogs. I only have 5 stars and do not sell, I have made over 75 purchases in 2 months, and only 5 sellers have left feedback. 4 sellers even made comments about my 5 stars! 1 was a seller that sent absolute garbage to me, 2, I believe, were being snobs but 2 I think were trying to be supportive. I will not go on the blogs, but I have contributed lots of photos and 4 never listened records. I am to the piont were I may just only use it for my lists and screw the rest......... If I wanted to be treated that way, I would go back to Facebook...... LoL!

I'm sorry to say this, but I haven't had the best of luck with Discogs and I shop there often. The sellers don't leave feedback for one thing, and my worst pet peave... They take my money and then after no communication of any sort, fail to contact them to ask why my record hasn't been shipped out for over 2 weeks. I've even had to get Discogs involved to get some of the sellers to finally communicate. One last thing, about a third of my Discogs buys have been quite overrated....lots of audible and feelable scratches after buying LP'S that were listed as NM. It's been quite a bummer lately. I've honestly had better luck and treatment on eBay.

I refrain from commenting, but I admit that I cringe a little when I see people buying LOTS of records but still playing them on a Crosley portable turntable. It’s only because the listening experience can be so much MORE with even a halfway decent set-up. Just a single turntable, receiver and speakers. And if you have money to buy $20-$25 dollar records, you could potentially be saving some of that to buy yourself a set up that will bring you a more enjoyable experience when spinning your records. It really is worth it. I mean that as an encouraging opinion.

@@NTXVinyl I suspect these entry level suitcase players are impulse buys from people that want to be a part of the "vinyl scene" but eventually drop off the radar. That's fine, I don't see any purpose in knocking someone else's stuff. I would rather see someone buy some low end player than invest thousands and find out they didn't like it after all and move on. Yeah I get the "if they got a good set up they would truly get the full experience" Well sometimes it really is just being trendy and nothing more. New VW Beetle anyone?

I'm more or less the opposite... my system is more expensive than the value of my records. I often get criticized because of that. In the end it's just a matter of perspective - quantity over quality or quality over quantity. I found that there are various kinds of subgroups within the record community. Some love to collect records for the sake of collecting records... as a tribute to their favorite bands. Others buy records for the sake of listening them over and over and over... looking to retrieve more and more detail from them by changing, tuning and upgrading their HiFi gear.

Regarding people ruining their records with bad turntables - this can often be true, but I agree completely - educate people, don't look down upon them. If you have a TT that doesn't have a tonearm that can be really set up properly (proper vertical tracking force via a counterweight and not a spring), that can be aligned with some proper geometry and a reasonable cartridge in good shape - yeah, you can destroy your stuff. But like you've said - explain it to people and educate them. And a proper turntable doesn't have to cost much - entry level fluance, u-turn, entry models from rega and pro-ject, older DD tables that have reasonable tonearms in good shape - all good. Regarding point 2 - that everything digitally sourced is crap, that's some of the BS I hate the most. Most of the time, the source is high resolution digital - not redbook. Secondly, proper vinyl releases sourced from digital have specific vinyl mastering - so there's already two big reasons why the sound can be great if everything is done properly, even if it's done from digital. Listen to Pink Floyd reissues or any of the King Crimson or Jethro Tull Steven Wilson remixes/remasters - all digital, all great. Tons of newer independent releases made from digital source that sound stunning. So yeah - crap argument from people that I believe also don't have much experience with what they're talking about.

I also have a ton of MOV pressings from Holland where probably most of them if not all are digitally sourced, and for the most part they honestly sound very, very good on my system. One thing... You mention not to get on people in general about how they handle their records, because like you say they may simply be unaware of that. BUT... and it is a *VERY BIG BUTT!* People like you, record store owners, and people who should *DAMN* well know better, then YES! Ones who are out there with record stores or are considered 'Authorities' on the subject should ABSOLUTELY be called on it if in their videos they reach in and grab EVEN the outer 1/4" of the vinyl between their thumb and forefinger. An absolute NO NO!!!
@NTXVinyl

I don't agree. Touching the outer edge (dead wax) of a vinyl record in order to properly get it in your hand while not touching the grooves isn't hurting anything. @@NTXVinyl Yes... reaching INSIDE the sleeve and putting the tips of your fingers on the center label and lightly grasping the outer EDGE with your thumb pointing straight up at right angles to the vinyl, then YES that is the correct way. There is NO proper way to 'grab' or squeeze your finger and thumb like a 'pincer on the outer grooves of the record without leaving oil or prints or who knows what across a good 1/4 - 1/2 inch of the outer vinyl. It just is not possible to 'grab' the record that way without leaving something. You might as well reach into the sleeve and bring it out properly (again, this is *NOT* to ridicule newbies or people who clearly *DO NOT KNOW* any better, which was your precise point, and I FULLY agree with you) YOU sir, however, know better... 😊 I've been collecting vinyl for over 40 years, and I PROMISE I am not as anal as I'm sounding here. But, just with this ONE and ONLY point, there never, EVER is reason not just to simply reach into the sleeve and do it properly. There is NEVER a reason simply to grab the outer 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the outer vinyl and pull it out. Ever...

@@latheofheaven...a few fingerprints won't hurt a thing, especially when they can easily be cleaned off. Some inner sleeves are made so tight ( especially those which have artwork, lyrics, etc) you can't even reach your hand in there to touch the label without tearing the sleeve apart.

I've been spinning records for over 50yrs. While I can't argue with many of the methods to play back records for their optimum performance, I have to call bull as well on a lot of the landscape. I don't care if it's a reissue or not. The record collecting community is small enough comparatively that if it's a bad remastering, word gets out. Trying to get that orignal first pressing, perfect cover art, imports only etc, etc.....come on. You're spending superfluous $$$ on trying to find the Holy Grail. I don't need my listening experience bolstered by any sort of online community/fraternity, do you? You only get kudos for your Holy Grail records from other nutjobs that are doing the same thing. I've never paid more than $40 for a record and that was to replace something stolen or lost. I probably pay on average $3-$10 on used records......about what I paid for them when they were new. 180 gram reissues become 'used' and they become available for less than they were retail. Try to buy records from people that have decent quality TT's....that's my best advice. Or just buy from used bins cheap, clean them up and see if they play decently. All this false hype around record collecting will just invariably drive up the price of all records across the board. Historically, it's been one of the cheaper hobbies to enjoy if you've always had the equipment anyway. If you can afford it, buy carts that have mico-line styli because they will recover groove information that the old elliptical styli couldn't or have damaged. Digital sourcing is fine....the key is in the sound engineer's mastering techniques. They are the guys that keep the warmth of analog going in the digital realm. Once they figure out what the record buying public wants, they can deliver. Again, it's a small community and what sucks in reissues will be known shortly. And totally agree when someone is saying vinyl is the 'best' format out there for music reproduction, they are just asinine. We all have our preferences....I like tape & vinyl, but streaming can be fantastic along with SACD's too. As humans, when we really enjoy something, we like to share...it's in our DNA. But the downside to that is when you adopt a country club exclusivity attitude towards what you enjoy. The beauty of music reproduction is that you can embrace all the formats, a few of them or just one....it's totally YOUR choice, but enjoy something without being a SNOB!

You hit the target and very well said... the defensive RSD comment missed the mark, in my humble, non-trolling opinion, because as a dealer, you're not objective. There is obviously a growing drumbeat among what I'd consider the most avid, mostly non-snob, vinyl fans that RSD has morphed into something to be avoided. Plenty of folks would love to cruise by and grab something specific, without a 4AM lineup and battle with a flipper for what turns out to be the ONE copy of a crappy version of Pearl Jam Unplugged. I'm the ideal RSD customer and I skipped it entirely this year. The flippers and lines and extreme allocation on RSD are vital to you, (nothing wrong with that) but also, often, it's a bummer to the passionate "regulars" who help you keep the lights on at your retail shops on all the other days that end in 'y'.
