He didn't really have any new discoveries. He simply explained the "invisible hand" theory by Adam Smith to those that benefited from it, yet have forgotten about it.

I have a slightly different view on the Great Depression. At the end of WW1 we do not know much on the working of the economy particularly world trade. Germany lost the war. The allies each come up with a dollar figure demand (reparations) from Germany. Soon after Germany defaulted. The allied marched back into Berlin and found there was no money in the vault. (don't laugh, we learn a lot in the past 100 years). So Germany started to print money to pay reparations. That quickly started the hyperinflation. That is contagious. Skip details. Britain caught it then America followed. Germany found a solution to break the trend. It was Socialism. The leader was Hitler and his power base was the Nazi Party which was a socialist political movement. He asked people to believe in a new currency and to built infrastructure. The economy revived very quickly because it was the right medicine at the time and the hard working people. A British guy Maynard Keynes witnessed the change and wrote a book called The Managed Economics (I think). Basically be was writing the Germany experience using deficit spending to neutralize the depression. At the time America was having a bad time. Poor people marched to Washington got nothing. They were pushed out of the state. Neighbouring states gave them petrol and guarded them along the way OUT. Teddy Rosevelt learned the lesson from Keynes and wisely decided to build the Hover Dam. There was no need for a dam at the time but successfully provided jobs to absolve the marchers. Google the distance to fathom the depth of the tragedy. The world put Keynes on the pedestal but carefully ignored Hitler's role in the idea of Managed Economics. It is also for this reason Churchill was kicked out of the PM office and installed Labour Government. Some people saw Nazi (1933 to 45) minus the war years could bounce back so quickly with such force they thought they would do that same. (By the way the allies bombers could not find the arsenal factories. The economists only solved the mystery after the war ended). They almost lost the country, This come back in a lighter note on the movie Tiger and Dragon. For some people, even if they have the code book they would not amount to much.
