I went to the Pike in the mid 60’s to the mud 70’s. It was showing its age and was run down but still was fun. The roller coaster was my favorite. My father went on it when he was young. My best friend and I went on it for my first time. I hurt my neck and suffered with that for 3 weeks. I went back though and enjoyed it 45 more times. It’s all gone now and so is my best friend. I’m 80 and I treasure those memories.

great video. I was one of the Marine MP's during the time when the Queen Mary came to Long Beach and there were protestors at the Navy Base. I loved the sights and sounds of walking the Pike. I guarantee you that there was never a dull moment on Long Beach's Nu-Pike. Never. Got my first tattoo there too. Great memories.

My family would go to the Pike whenever we could talk our dad into it. He would usually say we can go to Newport which is a nicer beach or go to Long Beach and maybe we can catch a few rides after playing in the sand. The answer was always the same, Long Beach and the PIKE! My first roller coaster ride was on the Cyclone Racer and I still remember that laugh from the character on the Laff in the Dark ride, my Dad would always say she laughed just like our Mom. My sister was too afraid to ride the coaster so she would always ask to feed the piano playing chicken right across from the entrance to the Cyclone. My brother of course would tell me all the gruesome details about sailors being beheaded on the ride and they never found the head in the ocean. LOL. The Pike was a blast and a treasured memory from my childhood. My wife and I took our son Don Jr. here when he was pretty young, around 5 years old. It was probably around '77-78 but it wasn't the same and was getting close to shutting down but I wanted to say he had been there. It would sure be fun to bring it back to Long Beach as this area has really been upgraded and looks very nice. Maybe some day...

I lived in Long Beach in 1950 My husband was in the Navy. We lived there twice when his ship the USS Sicily was in port there. The Pike was was wonderful and so was the beach and park. There were basketball courts. We lived on the 3rd floor apartment on Pine ave one block from the beach.

I know what you mean. I'm old enough to have been to the Pike before it was closed for good. The old underground tunnel is still there just sealed off. Now the city wants to reopen the tunnel as a pathway with nothing there. No shops like there were. Sometimes my city aggravates me to no end. They put up all these high end apartments but with nothing to do in the area. It's dumb.

As a couple of others have commented, this footage is from the making of "Incredibly Strange Creatures who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-up Zombies". I say "from the making of" because not all of what you see here is used in the film, I think this actually has more, and longer shots of the Pike! The D of P was Joseph Mascelli, and the camera operators were Laszlo Kovacs and Vilmos Zsigmond, newly arrived in the US; they would go on to win Oscars. The music, the band organ playing the Strauss waltz and sounds are in the film. Ray Dennis Steckler is seen at 0:31-0:32, the leftmost of the three people walking away from the camera. The film has just come out in a Blu-Ray edition which can be purchased from Severin Films. I am eagerly awaiting my copy.

Hi my name was Rhonda Hathaway at the time my dad Edward Hathaway was managing the Pike, he was there from about 1953 - til it was torn down, so I was brought up there, my mom Mae and my Aunt Bea sold tickets there and my Aunt Bea also worked in the cotton candy and she also was a house keeper for Mr. Valair who owned most of the pike. I ran lose with my brothers Randy and Danny down there I knew everyone, and of course that was my first job selling tickets in kiddie land, it was one of the best lives a kid could have. It just about killed my dad when they tore it down, something inside of him died with it. He died in 1994. I feel so Blessed to have lived that life, my oldest boy Shawn who was born in 1970 was fortunate enough to get to experience some of it before it was gone, those were the HAPPY DAY'S !!!!

Never got to go there! Only admired it from afar from the beach. This was the mid 70s and just a couple years later it closed. However I did get to go to Disneyland and Magic Mountain. My mom developed her fear of roller coasters at the Pike as she got terrified of the airtime. She claimed she almost flew out but that is what airtime feels like. However she never got over it

WOW does this bring back memories, way back some friends & I went to spend the day there at the Pike, on the roller coaster we got stuck on top, brakes locked, the guy working it climbed up to the top & unlocked the brakes & we had no one working the brake, some man ran over just before we hit the cars in front of us at the bottom, then, we went on the double ferris wheel & got stuck at the top of it, the fire dept. had to come get us down, we left after that, 2 times in one day was enough, a guy from the insurance co. came & gave a check for 200.00 but I thought it was just a sore neck from hitting the cars at the bottom, I was 18 & dumb, should have sued, have had trouble with neck & back along with surgeries, oh well had a lot of fun growing up near there & went all the time!!!!

Wow, I just was taken back by this Nu-Pike footage. I was born and raised in Long Beach, till my family moved to Los Angeles when I was 13. I ask my family cousins, Aunts, do they remember the attractions at the Pike? The Monkey Cage with real Monkeys, the Plung where my boy Cousins learned to swim, us girl's couldn't go, the Sailors, the beautiful underground tunnel that you could walk through from Ocean Blvd. Straight to the Beach. My Mother took us once to Ocean Blvd. to see a parade, The Miss Universe Contestants were in the Parade and they all were staying at the Laffette Hotel there in Long Beach. My Mom always said that the Pike went down after the Navy pulled out. The Pike was fun for the Sailors but a lot of them were being robbed and sometimes killed. The Navy tried moving their paydays to different days, but it didn't help. Long Beach, the older members use to say lost a lot of revenue when the Navy left. Then the ugly oil drilling started not far from shore, the Nu-Pike was doomed. Still, I'll always remember that long beatiful Pier lined with colorful lamps that went over the waters. That was one of the happy times I can remember with my Mom, Dad, Sister & Brother riding down that Pier in our Car, and of course looking at the beautiul lights coming from the Nu-Pike.

MY FIRST VISIT WAS IN 1954. THE CYCLONE RACER WAS THE FIRST AND LAST TIME I EVER RODE ONE. I WAS 10YRS OLD. I AM 77YRS OLD NOW. THOSE ARE MY FONDEST MEMORIES. THEY HAD A SIDESHOW OF A GIRL THEY CALLED THE MONKEY GIRL. WHEN I GOT OLDER I REALIZED SHE WAS JUST MENTALLY DISABLED THEY ALSO HAD A MAN THAT WAS TURNING TO STONE. MY BEST MEMORIES WERE IN 1961 THRU 1964. MY FRIENDS AND I WENT TO A DANCE CALLED THE "LIDO BALLROOM. THAT IS WHEN THE NAVY WAS THERE. WE WERE CRAZY ABOUT THE SAILORS. ALL OF THAT IS GONE, BUT I STILL HANG ON TO THOSE MEMORIES.

Lived here all my life and this was the most fun when I was a kid growing up. My grandmother would take me and my brother every week during the summer to the pike. Take the tunnel under Ocean blvd. Go to the pike and then the beach. It's really too bad that big business came in and screwed the whole city up. They could have made the Pike another Disneyland. Could have made it better and bigger.

Great footage...i rode all those rides..im 54 now...i would take the magnolia #4 bus from my neighborhood in wrigley and get dropped off at Lincoln Park and walk across ocean to the pike and hang out all day..it was $5 for a all day pass for the rides..most boardwalk games were 25 cents....it was great....it only cost me 25 cents to catch the bus back home..some arcade games actually let you win cash..if i won money I would take a ride home in a real checkered yellow cab...

My only memory of the pike was watching my mom and dad at the top of the roller coaster, ready to go down. it was the first time ever that they rode a roller coaster together. I was probably around 10 or 11 so around 1971 I take that back... I also remember a ride called Magic Carpet Ride where you came down at the end on these roller things. Weird :)

Correction. I looked it up and it turns out that there is a story behind the mummy. They say it was an out law named Mccurddy who robbed a train back in 1911. You can look it up on google under "pike mummy". It was discovered by a film crew that was filming an episode of "the six million dollar man" back in 1975. Funny stuff!

When I was a kid I spent many week ends at the pike. There was a haunted house type ride that had a mummy in it that would light up and moan as you passed it. Just before the pike closed, the arm of the mummy had broken off. When the owner went to reattach it, he discovered that it was a real mummy incased in the plaster. It was in the news paper. They speculated that the guy was probably the victim of a crime sindicate killing. Like "Mafia" stuff. lol

thanks for your kindness. someone said the cyclone was replaced in 68 with s different roller coaster ride which they also called the cyclone. long beach museum and historical society is no help at all. im so sorry this park that gave so many such fun is gone. i was raised in the area and have shadow memories of it. all I wanted was to find out if there really was a memorial plaque regarding my moms death which i was told is why they finally shut it down in 78 and deconstructed it in 79.. if there was some memorial plaque in her memory at the park, it would have been nice to have it or a picture of it. it would be nice to have a more accurate account of how my mom died on it. closure would be nice. im told thr cars had no restraints of any kind. supposedly my mom death created a law requiring restraints on all rides across America. i have great memories of California long beach to Los Angelos but the park for me is a bit of a heart throb, it would help to know what exactly happened to her on it. i have only a tiny news paper clipping and the info on it, kind of confusing

does anyone remember the 'hall of mirrors?' if you do, then you probably remember that man figure hanging from the wall out front... when the pike was finally dismantled in the '70's, it turned out that the man 'hanging' out front was a real person. he was murdered back in the '30's or '40's, mummified & hung in front of the house of mirrors in plain sight!

Is that the one where they had the fat lady and man laughing out front, and if you stood in front of the distorted mirrors, a gush of air would shoot up? I loved that ride, but I thought the body had been hanging on the inside, hanging from the dark ceiling. I always swore I'd sneak a flashlight in to see inside but always forgot I grew up going to the Pike and then took my kids there. I even remember the old swimming pool.
