For the reactor there is actually two shutdown protocols in the facility: In the first one that activates before the 10-minute mark you need to lower the reactor temperature below 2500°k and input a code to shut down the lasers (the purple lasers are neutron bombarding units that have their own small fission reactors), this will not work if the temperature it’s too high or one of the lasers is broken (there is a chance of one laser reactor melting down and destroying the laser or a crane in the reactor room falling in the laser). If the first shutdown fails or the 3 minutes window expires the second shutdown option maybe engage and the 10 minutes mark will start. The second shutdown option its extremely dangerous and goes against the facility procedures: Three man must go inside the reactor confinement structure while the reactor it’s on a thermal runaway and eject the three fuel cells at the same time to provoke a combustion stall, if they succeed the reactor will shut down and the codex will spray gallons of water on top the structure to cool it down. The onsite bunkers are for the people that do not have time to evacuate to the surface of the facility because its underground. Thers also more problems that make it harder to shut it down: The code has been erase from the systems and it has to be found manually At one point a crane falls on top of the coolant lines and destroys it. Because all the measurement and control systems are integrated in the core structure the only thing that conects the reactor to the control room are two massive cables, when these breake you loss total control of the reactor. In resume the reactor its not that bad, the systems and accidents are bad because in the lore is supposed to be sabotage disguised as an accident.

Fun facts. 1. this game takes place somewhere in New Haven, Connecticut. I am unsure if New Haven is a real place, but it powers the entire city in the game. 2. They have a miniature fission reactor called "Foxtrot 9", Mainly used as a auxiliary power for when the main reactor is offline for maintenance and such. 3. Electrons are the game's currency, and you get some for doing achievements such as shutting the DMR off during a emergency, or turning them on. You can also get some for dieing by the DMR, but I'm unsure if you can get money for being killed via the transformers. 4. The lasers themselves are radioactive, which is why the entire area outside the container is also irradiated. 5. "Thermal Systems" are the Emergency Fire Suppression system, which are 3 tanks of some foam or water above the entire DMR. 6. The nuclear regulatory commissioners would never allow it, or OSHA, or any federal organization, which is why they have signs around the place telling staff to report to security if you see any.

11:39 The research facility part of this game is important. The reason this game had "power orders", is because although the fusion reactor is connected to the electric grid, it's still a sort-of "experiment". The power orders are essentially active tests (the reason for the disaster is also a stress test). Like you said, it's carrying the entire New England/East Coast (game set location) area, so it doesn't matter if the power from the reactor is decreased or increased in any sort of way, it will still be exporting enough power for every single home in the state, even the region. They're trying to see if it can hold a certain energy output sustainably. Don't forget that the game is set in 1985 B)

10:00 I’m pretty sure that load is only the facility… the place is huge. It’s located in a deep mine shaft. Plus, to your questions about why it’s so unsafe, it’s because an employee removed the automatic shutdown system, put a lockdown test on the facility, tampered with fuel cell 3, and scheduled a test on the DMR, shortly before leaving. A DMR meltdown is also not the only event that can happen. There is a warhead located in the facility that was made to explode in case of a data breach involving “Epsilon-8”. Epsilon-8 is a laboratory deep within the energy research facility primarily focused on human experimentation. Had there been a data breach, the information regarding Epsilon-8 would have put many higher-ups at Quantum Science in federal prison (or worse) under hundreds of counts of second-degree murder among other charges. They decided that, in case of a data breach regarding Epsilon-8, it would be better to explode the entire facility and possibly more hoping to destroy any evidence of Epsilon-8’s existence. In the game, however, raiders can enter the facility and hack the warhead controls, leading to the detonation of the facility. There are other events in QSERF that do not involve the entire facility exploding. You can explode a fission reactor named Foxtrot-9, you can dance to California Girls, and more. There are ways to shutdown the DMR. Either get the shutdown code from somewhere in the facility and input it into the control panel, or in the case that doesn’t work you can have 3 people stand on the containment vessel while it is on fire and eject the 3 fuel cells at the exact same time.
@boredlbored4 ай бұрын

@BadAtNames00175 ай бұрын
I’m a QSERF nerd so I may be able to clear a few things up. First off, this is an older version of the game, there have been quite a few updates since. Second, the game took place on August 18, 1985. Lore-wise, the DMR explosion occurred before Chernobyl, so… Third, the evacuation route used in the video was possibly the longest route in the game. Employees have a keycard that gives them access to about anywhere in the facility in about a minute. Fourth, the DMR itself isn’t a fusion reactor as far as I know. However, the power lasers (the blue lasers) are each powered by fusion. I do not know what the DMR actually is. Fifth, when they say to evacuate the internal structure in 20 seconds, it’s quite a long time. This is because 1, this countdown cannot occur unless all the fuel cells are inserted, 2, it means just the small area where the fuel cells are, not the entire DMR chamber. I know this is about 9 months late, but whatever.
@docbrosstudio76805 ай бұрын
The Lasers are Fission, not fusion reactors. That and DMR stands for Dark Matter Reactor, according to the game, Neutrons heat up water to make it boil, then basic thermal plant stuff. Then Dark Matter produced by the hadron collider or that came in from off-site is used to increase the heat by the neutrons, like fission without elements.

The "structural integrity" warning was clearly inspired by Star Trek which has "structural integrity fields", which are sci-fi "energy is a glowing object" fields that help a structure under strain stay intact. As for the "energy as a glowy object", when they do show it, it's the same visual effect as their shield bubbles and it just sort of sits on whatever it's holding together. When "structural integrity (field strength)" drops, the glowy shield effect starts to fade like it's a cloth tearing. That said, you could make a "structural integrity" monitor with force gauges and fixed laser measurements. If a set of lasers pointed at key points along a structural support are misaligned, you could map that misalignment to determine the support was flexing and then set off a warning if that value is too great. And we already use built-in force gauges in bridges to monitor their structural integrity, and then measured periodically. I could totally see something like that being rigged up in a future structure producing enough energy to leave it on all the time.

The DMR is supposedly supposed to be an Inertial Confinement Reactor which uses a small amount of produced 'dark matter' on top of normal fusion fuel to "boost" the reaction. Theoretically dark matter is extremely unstable and filled with usable energy.
@Stoney3K Жыл бұрын
The thing is, with any fusion reactor, there is no uncontrolled self-sustainment. You shut off whatever fuel supply the thing has, it goes out. You vent the vacuum chamber to atmosphere, it goes out. You drop whatever magnetic field you have around it, it goes out. Easy comparision: A fission reactor is a campfire that will keep smoldering while a fusion reactor is an engine with a throttle and an ignition switch. There's no failure mode in any fusion reactor that results in it producing more and more energy until the earth-shattering kaboom. Unless the "dark matter" in the game is just a way of handwaving those magical properties to make the reactor unstable and unpredictable, otherwise it wouldn't be challenging.

About there being no hope for the reactor and hiding in the bunkers. The core has 2 shutdown options Phase 1 - This is around Code Red. You bring the core to below 5000K and enter the code. This invokes a combustion stall and shuts down the reactor. Phase 2 - This is around Code Black. It happens by chance. It involves opening the reactor door, entering and pulling all 3 fuel cells out (with 3 players) at a very close time. This invokes a manual combustion stall and shuts down the reactor. If P1 and P2 fail or P2 doesn't happen then there is no hope. I would reccomend looking at both endings.

So... how that reactor "works", it's using fission byproducts/neutrons to power the reactor, that's what those "blue lasers" are for.
@robertchapman2174 Жыл бұрын
that's why there is a radiation warning on the main structures.
@robertchapman2174 Жыл бұрын
and when that reactor collapses, it can actually destroy the power laser containment vessels and release radioactive particles.
@robertchapman2174 Жыл бұрын
and in this video that alert is not the true alert in the actual game. It unusually uses the current EAS system instead of what was in that era-correct video.

This is my take on how this would work irl: The dark matter would actually be antimatter (antihydrogen in this case), wich is contained inside that giant containment vessel, by using the lasers to suspend it in the middle of a basically perfect vaccum. Then hydrogen is shot at the antihydrogen, thousands of times per second, generating energy and heat. This heat gets absorbed by the chamber walls, heats up oil,and that oil is used to superheat water, wich then explosively evaporates into steams wich then turns absolutely MASSIVE turbines, generating power. The reactor could explode like this, as an overpressure if too much hydrogen is injected, causing the pressure in the vessel to increase. And as fuel is injected with it, the pressure exponentially increases, egentually causing the reactor to explode. And if the explodion cloud gets to the antigydrogen, it could get even bigger.

Here is some lore on how the reactor works The fuel cells are a combination of dark matter and uranium, the dark matter allows the reaction to run at colder temps The DMR itself im pretty sure is a fusion reactor, the lasers. Also known as neutron bombardment units, use fission reactors There is a second reactor in the game called. To my knowledge. The 267 sterling fission reactor, AKA F9. Due to it being located in the foxtrot-9 sector, its fuel cycle can last in excess of 10 years. Also the DMR explosion pretty much vaporized the entirety of the bottomside of the facility.

They say to evacuate the internal structure of the reactor because the inside isnt sealed to radiation, you literally get microwaved inside
@ThatJay283 Жыл бұрын

The ignition wasnt badly timed, its not auto. It's just that some other guy went up to the control room and confirmed the ignition edit: in game theres actually a few minutes where you are meant to have the reactor off as it says: "when the shift buzzer sounds, the DMR must be on." and the shift buzzer doesnt sound until minutes later

fact: this game takes place in 1987 (if i remember correctly) and the explosion of the DMR is canon, and was so powerfull, that the US goverment thought the soviet union was attacking them on the day of the meltdown. Also the "Evactuation" part of the refueling process is so that all players leave the inside of the superstructure (the place where fuel assembilies are inserted) because (as the game describes it) if you are inside during the startup and operation phase, you will essentially be microwaved. Also please play "Realistic boiling water simulator" its probably the simplest and yet still complex way to operate a reactor. if you get enough points you can even operate Unit 2, alongside with the whole turbine room for it.

It isn't dark matter that is the problem here, surely it'd be anti-matter that would be a problem. By my basic understanding dark matter could literally be everywhere, just undetectable by normal means.
@emre_ez Жыл бұрын
Ok so essentialy you are saying that you should just be able to shut it down. But the reactor has 2 shutdown options essentially. 1: Maintenance mode when fuel cells are low(they arent) 2: Emergency Stall : This has a code which has been deleted from the systems in the lore of the game so you cant engange the emergency stall protocol to shut it down IN LORE. in game you can find the code on a note and use it to engage the emergency stall protocol to stall and shutdown the reactor
@samuels11234 ай бұрын
Believe the integrity monitoring system is predictive, to assess threat of breach based on how many systems have failed. The system does successfully predict when core control was lost, and then went into negatives as the control lines melted. The whole reactor is a bit unsafe because it's a research facility testing the application of dark matter collected from a particle accelerator as a source of heat, even more unsafe when the emergency shutdown system is sabotaged.

Funny fact: each blue beam is called a power laser, but they are infact particle beans, each "power laser" (or Neutron Bombardment Unit) is a fission reactor Another funny fact: the game has a line that goes something like: "If you ever wanted to know why you need to vacate the internal structure? Not doing so will microwave you"

There are 2 chances to shutdown the reactor as long as all lasers are online theres 1 for phase 1 which is just searching for a code and doing these things theres 1 for phase 2 where you have to eject all fuel cells within 3 seconds of each other (they will come out flying) causing a combustion stall

I'm not a physicist, so take what I say here with a grain of salt, but I read about dark matter almost daily. I'm totally fascinated by it. I think you are thinking of antimatter instead of dark matter at the beginning. Dark matter is something that probably exists because it's creating gravity, but we can't see, interact with, or detect it directly yet. From my understanding, antimatter isn't really any more or less energy dense than its regular matter counterpart, but when antimatter comes into contact with normal matter both annihilate into pure energy. There could be an entire civilization of antimatter beings though, that would think of us as antimatter. This was a really interesting scenario though, and as always I really like your videos.
@Midna_174 Жыл бұрын
Maybe we are the antimatter beings.

The reason of it being a "dark matter reactor" (DMR for short) is because the DMR produces steam to turn those turbines, the dark matter in the DMR is to keep it more cool, along with the coolant helping it. (in the newer version talk to the npc inside the control room) Edit: the fuel cells contain the dark matter, thats why you refuel them at the hadron collider at sector A
@Radioactive_19511 ай бұрын
Its a inertial confinement fusion reactor it only uses the dark matter at low temperatures... (and the blue lasers are fission reactors :3)
@gonnaenodaethat61989 ай бұрын
The current popular fringe science is some connection between using particle accelerators to make quantum turbulence great enough to sustain a super small black hole that sucks up dark mater alone....then you use the radiation from the black hole to power a steam turbine like normal. However, I don't think the game is using that model...it's probably using a laymen's understanding of the concept. Or, ha ha dark mater make hot thing spin xD

The reactor can be shut down but it usually fails depending on the temperature
@rockets-space Жыл бұрын
The temperature in Kelvin is likely referring to the surface of the exterior section of the reactor. The version of the game in the video is outdated, and cuts out many details that are present in the actual game. I recommend this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXicq6lnm75glZo (This video shows all possible events in the game)
@zidekrzofficer72 Жыл бұрын
Im fan of the game, because I like the events, since the big update which changed the Meltdown event and the stall event too and they added back the good meltdown Phase 2 shutdown which is ejecting every fuel cell at the same time which instantly shutdown the reactor and stall it, well you need luck to get that event but it's very good feeling when you do an epic move
