Nuclear medicine has advanced. It now harnesses the power of radioactive atoms and can deliver it directly into cancer cells. This sophisticated medicine has two main components, a radioactive atom, and a tumor specific molecular puzzle piece. The medicine passes by most healthy cells, but when it encounters a matching cancer cell, the puzzle pieces snap together. Over time, the radioactive atoms cluster around cancer cells, no matter where they are hiding in the body, and collectively do damage to tumor cells. Their punch is powerful, but their reach is limited. So most of the damage stays inside the tumor. It's a different kind of nuclear power for cancer therapy.
