Nuclear Rail action in Cumbria May 2023

A bumper crop of rare DRS Nuclear working to Barrow docks over the last few days. Class 68s up close and personal on the Ramsden Dock branch top and tailing KXA-C Nuclear flask carriers with PFA spacer wagons to spread the weight on the viaducts further North on the Cumbrian Coast line. We lso see Tuesday's Sellafield to Heysham Power station train in action

My brother used to do that job when he was a driver with DRS BUT with two class 37 locomotives

Hi Dave. When I was helping Revolution./ Accurascale Trains with the design of their forthcoming FNA-D model I asked whether the KXA-C might be an option (it uses the same BER 25T bogie) but they thought its operating area and obscurity mmeant it migt not attract enough orders. Shame, I would have bought all six!

I disagree with Accurascale. Rule 1 probably applies for the FNA-D for most modellers, so why not the KXA-C. Also think the 1/3 height LLNW PFA agons mught also do well. It seems that you are involved with the industry if you are able to help them. Thanks

So that's what the big wagons are for. Never seen those containers before. Hiw often do Fishers bring flasks into Barrow?

Hi Les. There are a couple of different types of flasks these beasts carry. These are usually nicknamed TN28s (Castors). Traffic to the dock is very sporadic, Months of inactivity and then 'All hands on deck'. Of course, Now I'm retired, I don't get the traffic notices in advance like I used too but still have a shrewd idea when something is occuring

Meant to add. Fishers are no longer involved. The vessels are operated by AW Ship management these days
