The artillery nukes of which only one was ever tested were initially thought to be used on the suspected mass soviet tank columns that would be spearheading the drive into Europe. At only 15 kilotons they would have easily destroyed a division but wouldn't level too much else. Pretty crazy the only thing that stopped them was the cannons took too long to emplace and they didn't have all that much range wasn't even 30 km if I remember right

Anyone out there remember when the US army was curios about range of atomic cannon and fired it vertically was just before dusk left a florescent trail in sky that lasted a few hours we lived in Arizona but was told it was fired in California...was in 1960s

Imagine someone detonating over a thousand nuclear weapons! 1054 is a big number. Just look at the satellite view of the area near the Sedan crater.

Why would you test some bomb like that? Scary stuff imagine an accident?

There isn't really a way to test a bomb without blowing it up. Before they tested the first one, some of the scientists were concerned that the energy of the explosion would cause the planet's atmosphere to catch fire.

A question for a clever person: When some nuclear bombs detonate, they are surrounded by cris-cross lines almost before the mushroom. Does anyone know what that is? Thanks

These are missile tracks. They are launched right before detonating vertically at the desired range of distances. this is done to calculate the power of the shock wave from the displacements of air with smoke. All this is captured by a high-speed camera. then scientists analyze the data
