Possessed are the complete death metal band. The lyrics are great and they have signature hypnotic, circular, maniacal, fast riffs and haunting melodies ( like the song the exorcist). The attention to song structure and catchy vocal lines and choruses keep the listener engaged fully. Jeff’s vocals are the right amount of gruff and melody. They know when to stop a riff rather than run it into the ground and have dynamic changes to contrasts and accentuate. The drums in exorcist follow closely with the riffs giving rise to the wall of sound that would later be adopted throughout the genre. I look around at fans at some death metal shows and you see the occasional boredom stares because the technicality supersedes the song writing- not so in the 80s - we sang every word and memorized every riff from bands like Possessed and Slayer. It was the start of an extreme movement. Thank you for the memories- cheers to creating new ones!

I still consider Death as the Godfather's of Death Metal. His impact was so much bigger, they were polished and precise in skill while being extremely brutal. Possessed was very messy instrumentally and they sounded more thrashy. Also chuck growled while Jeff does more of a yell. Just my opinion though.

Chuck doesnt growl. Thoses guys , Jeff inclued , Tardy inclued , Kelly shaefert inclued . They took Screams of the guys from before and pushed the agression by 30 . Distortion too. Chuck high screams are Dan belher updated Thats distorted , extreme vocals but on vocal support and chords , textures, range , its a WHOLE different technique than Kam Lee or Chris barnes ..

Possessed in fact was the most extreme band back then, if you watch the old bootlegs you'll see that he's growling like a maniac they were playing odd riffs and odd time signatures with more open chords, a lot more out of the box sounding for thrash metal bands, they a long with Celtic Frost, venom, exodus and mantas are the ground zero of death metal.
