I was a drill sergeant at Ft. Benning 1968-69 (E-9-2) I made the mistake of bringing a 1957 MGA to drive...not an MGA parts store or repair shop anywhere nearby...fortunately a small section of our barracks floor buffer electrical cord worked as a coil wire ( actually better than OEM)...exciting times with the war in Viet Nam in full bloom...

MGs are neat like cars, my Uncle has a 1964 MGB that used to run when I was an kid and it was always a riot to go for cruises in. It's rotting in his back yard now, probably too far gone to save.

I was a 2nd leutenant, third marine corp..larp specialist, I was trained as a sniper..I was very skinny, so my name was..skinny. my first operation was to scout a village, i took overwatch, my squad moved in,...there was an explosion, and suddenly all hell broke loose, I started firing my gun..

Yep!I was there some generations later from 8/12/86 to 11/27/86.I was at A-10-2 (Vangaurd of Victory) Harmony Church for Basic and Infantry AIT.The most memorable moment of my life was the US Army Airborne School which i had tons of fun and finally jumping out of the C-130 and C-141 for my qualifying jumps and getting my coveted Airborne Wings of a Paratrooper.My dad went through Airborne School there in 1943 during WWII.Since dad 12 members of my family went through Ft,Benning to serve our country.Its been almost 28 years since i have been there.

I'm late, but I was in E-10-2, also "Vanguard of Victory" in 86 (prior service reclass)! Man, do I remember the barracks of Harmony Church, and jump school afterwards! My son, now a SSG, followed after me...some miserable times there, but I wouldn't change them for the world. Good to know you brother!

I attended airborne school as an E-5, graduated, and reported to Infantry Officer Candidate School (OCS) 63d Company, 6th Student Battalion that same day. I did airborne school to get in shape for OCS. It turned out to be a very wise move and contributed greatly to my success.

Spent four years there in the 1980s, now my son is there and I have gone back for a few visits. Much of it is the same but all of the WW2 and Vietnam era buildings are gone. His barracks are really nice which I was happy to see. Columbus is also a lot nicer, the downtown area by the river has some great restaurants and bars.

Charles, We were the first ones in a training unit that was reactivated. Our drill sergeant said, "We're twice as good, so we're marching twice as far". I'm just a civilian but if any of you do not mind answering a question. Did they teach firing from the hip and is that still taught? If so what is the advantage? I don't know but it seems like it would not be any faster and that it would reduce your hit rate. Just a guess. Thanks to you all.
Firing from the hip would only be worthwhile if the enemy were in bunch's and very very close (better have a bayonet fixed as well.) and bearing in mind you have to be in the standing position to do this thus exposing yourself on a two way range. Generally used for converting live rounds to empties.
@dennisbarrett614811 ай бұрын
I remember in basic in 69, we had a short afternoon class and some range time on what they called Quick Kill. Basically from the hip or a little higher using hand/eye co ordination. No shouldering the rifle or using the sights.Much faster in close quarters. We started out with BB guns at first

I was at Fort Jackson 1975 When we first lined up with our duffel bags - the first thing the drill sargeant did was tell us ' when I say up - you pick your duffel bag up over your head - when I say down - you put your duffel bag on the ground ' then he command loudly for about 5 minutes straight : UP ! DOWN ! UP ! DOWN ! UP ! DOWN ! ... And we also quickly learned the front leaning rest position ... Back then when we did the figure 8 training ( run dodge & jump ), where you run through the two gates and jump over the water pit in the middle, we had the person who was next in line - run behind us hitting us with their belt ... Does anybody who went to Fort Jackson remember the dam dam area ? The sand pit that you had to belly crawl down one hill through the sand pit then up the hill on the other side ? If you raised up even the slightest then you had to start all over ...

The original Harmony Church WWII barracks we used had been demolished. Kind of sad about that. Also, the recruits did not have to go through the monkey bars to get into the chow hall.
