I was an ambulatory patient at the 1967 DaNang Christmas show at Freedom Hill. It was a great show, but the end of the show was something I will never forget. Over 10,000 lonely guys singing Silent Knight in harmony. I still choke up whenever I hear that song and remember that moment. A lot of those guys aren’t here to remember the beautiful memory of that moment of brotherhood.

I have total respect for Mr Hope ! Whether you liked him or not, he was there along with Racquel Welch and another young lady to try and entertain the young troops that day. I didn't get a chance to see his show while I was in Vietnam because my area of operation was extremely too close for their troop to take a chance of losing their lives. But I applaude him for his devotion to bring a smile on those young soldier's faces ! I am very proud of his action's ! Rest In Peace Mr. Bob Hope !

My Dad was the Sr. Marine Corp officer coordinating the USO in da nang in '67. I was 5 yrs old at the time and convinced he would be killed.. He was behind the curtain during this show, which brings me to tears. He made lifelong friends with several of the celebrities on this tour. Some I can remember coming to our house for dinner after the war. He was one of the lucky ones that came home. I am so grateful to Bob Hope and the rest of the crew who came to entertain and bring joy to the troops, not all of whom were as lucky as we were to be reunited with loved ones at home. Dad always said that with one exception (who i wont name except to say it was not BH) the entire touring crew was gracious, sincere, and entirely genuine in wanting to do what they could to lift the spirits of the troops and help where they could..truly lovely spirits!

@Ron Roast Thank you. A bit young to be stolen to "serve", (serve what? we did not know), but you see reality better than the guy who started this thread, (He got good grades in college I am sure). If we do not know we are fighting for the philosophies of individual liberty that created the USA exceptionally, than we have no idea what we were really fighting for. Thank God for Ann Rand. It is actually traceable that she ended the draft, (free people should not have their kids scooped up for war against their will, not freedom), with a friend of hers as an advisor for Nixon. I do thank you though man for your patriotism, (and glad you are here to tell a bit of your story, still living). I just wish we had patriots as your bosses. I think those patriots died after WW2.
@2Uahoj4 жыл бұрын
@Ron Roast Not exactly, the years long effort definitely slowed the communist movement throughout the wider region, keeping countries like Thailand and Indonesia largely free of it. Whether that was worth the price is another question, but it definitely did have that effect.

I was there as a young Marine in 1967 and was about fifty yards to the front and a little to the right of the stage. I admired the entertainers for their courage to come to entertain us in a war zone. We did everything possible to protect them. There absolutely was no one like Bob Hope. He didn't just do this once and brag about it. He entertained troops for many years. He truly was someone worthy of admiration. On the opposite end of the spectrum there was Jane Fonda. I hated her during the VietNam war and still do to this day. She has attempted to twist the story to her advantage but it's not working. She has made her bed with her traitorous actions. Now she must lay in it. Then there is John Kerry and what he did afterwards to help destroy our great country from with-in. Enough said, probably too much but I have spoken the truth. Semper Fi Bob Hope.

Did not get to see him in 67 as had to work, but Mr. Hope was the greatest HOPE that we had. He brought more MERRY to Christmas, to Soldiers since the Second than will ever be known. The man and his troupe (that was willing to give up Christmas at home with family) to help us soldiers away from family is now an ANGEL, and we all THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES. Tom Byrne Nam 67-68

THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE, I WAS BORN IN 64 AND MY FATHER WAS IN VIETNAM IN 67 AND REMEMBER IT WAS VERY STRESSFUL FOR MY MOM AND MY AUNTS AND UNCLES AT THE TIME. HE CAME HOME EVENTUALLY BUT HE HAD SOME PTSD. HE NEVER TALKED ABOUT WHAT HE SAW OVER THERE BUT NOW THAT I AM OLDER. I CAN JUST IMAGINE.

What a legend Mr Bob Hope was. Didn't swear, no foul language and all class. Those guys didn't know what was coming next over there. I love watching these shows. You know, it's sad that society in the Western world has gone backwards with the lowering of standards and so called progressive JUNK. Anyhow, it's pure entertainment here.

I love coming back to KZbin and reliving the emotions and tears of the Bob Hope shows. I was there for two of them in Long Binh, 1970-1971. To my brothers RIP. Interesting remembering the VP of Vietnam who eventually lived in Orange Country California and owned a 7-11. Also of note, the last 3 Presidents of Vietnam after the communist took over are buried in the US.

I was 7 years old and remember watching edited versions of Hope’s USO shows on TV. I was too young at the time to really understand what was going on or to appreciate Hope’s humor. Watching it today with 60-year old adult eyes I get it - Bob Hope was one of the best comedians ever and his heart and soul were 100% for the troops he entertained. There will never be another.

It doesn't matter what idiots think of Bob Hope. He was absolutely not only a great man, a great entertainer, but a real American. Great American means he was willing to put actions behind what others only say. It also means he respected those who stood up for their principles by risking their lives, not the kind to hide behind a fake name and get away with character assassination.

When I look at these shows, I can’t shake the feeling that I’m looking in the faces of brave, radiant young men who SHOULD have had their entire lives ahead of them. This is one of MANY conflicts that our country should not have been in. To be able to see this recording taking place during such a pivotal time in world history is fascinating to say the least. You’re looking in the faces of many people in that audience who didn’t make it. But they were there for a special moment in time, that only TRUE entertainers can create. An oasis in a time of peril. For all of the suffering to come, a fleeting moment of joy. It’s the sacrifice of men like these who make it possible for us to argue over the silliest things that don’t even matter, freely. All people care about now are themselves. God bless that era of entertainers and humanity. We will NEVER see the likes of it again.

Those men were willing to fight and die to stop Communism. Today Communism has taken our country from within, and where are those who are willing to fight and die to stop it? They are nowhere to be found. In 1964 I joined the Marines to go fight Communism in Vietnam. It's time that the present generation step up to the plate. Since that won't happen, there is no other conclusion to come to but that the country is lost.

Here's to my Jr HS buddy Francis (Frank) Schmautz from MA. Ran into him at Ft Hood TX at a base bar joint and still remember a Bob Dylan tune on the jukebox. I was training with the 135th Assault Helicopter Company and the full company went over on C130's from TX. Frank, my best early school buddy in Washington DC enlisted in the Army and went Infantry. He was KIA just one month after in-country. They named a city park after him in Worcester MA.

Thank you for sharing this video with the world. I hope future generations will have the desire to view this. To see that war is never the answer. To take these beautiful young men away from their families, for a lost cause. I'm crying as I write this. I lived thru this. It ruined my 19 year old brothers life. He joined the Marines in '69, only to flee to Canada. I wonder how many of these men came home in a body bag...Thank you Bob Hope, for entertaining our troops, and letting them they were not forgotten.....

God bless all the men who were over there and fought for what they thought was right for this country. To anyone who disrespected them when they returned, shame on you. Vietnam was, from all accounts, a hellish experience. It's a wonder anyone made it out of there and resumed a 'normal' life. Thanks to all the men and women of the U.S. forces for their service.

+UnpunishedMovie America was 100% correct to be over there. The communists were trying to take over the world. People who attacked and criticized the returning service personnel were nothing but socialists/communists. Today those types of people have taken over the media.

I served in Vietnam from 1966-1971, I cannot tell you how hurt I was to be ridiculed and criticized after putting my life on the line for my country, I never dodged the Draft, yet here are these people nice and safe at home while I'm out getting shot in the leg almost blown to kingdom come by a grenade, I lost three of my closest friends, their siblings come to my home each year at Christmas out of the four guys on my street including me, who went to Vietnam, I was the only survivor, those three men were my best friends, one died in the Tet offensive, the other two died in front of me in the Battle of Saigon 1969, I was wounded in the leg the other guys were hit all over. A mortar landed about four feet away from me knocking me out, when I came to, the medic who dragged me out of danger, told me my buddies didn't make it they were dead before they hit the ground. Now at the time, I figured that at least they would be thanked for their service, instead they ridicule them and all vets. We were called Baby-Killers, and many other names, I never wanted to kill anyone, but I did as ordered, and to survive they forgot the fact that NVA and the Vietcong used children to infiltrate our camps than lob grenades and fire weapons at us, the hell were we supposed to do, not defend ourselves because some Draft-Dodger will call us names, and ridicule us? Not on your life, we were going to defend ourselves, that did not mean it didn't hurt any less, it felt like someone tore up my soul and fed it to a dog, It took me 4 years to just try and put it out of my mind. I had Napalm burns in September of 1967, did anyone protest that, or the fact that the Commies did everything in their power to tear us up mentally, and physically, nope but suddenly defending a nation in need and doing everything in our power to protect South Vietnam, was wrong? I mean how can people sit at home with all the comforts of home, while there are guys giving their lives to try and guarantee safety from the dangerous Communist Regimes, yet they just say we're evil and uncaring, I am still haunted to this day by the events of Vietnam. The same thing goes for the Police, who keep everyone safe to the best of their abilities, yet when police try to put down riots they are deemed the Gestapo, and when they are shot and killed in the street by some two bit hoodlum, no one paints up a sign to protest the death of an officer, no one cares about the fact that the police try their best to keep them safe, they just ridicule and criticize the police, and the Military, when their own soldiers lay their lives down for their country for any war after WWII, they are criticized or forgotten. I think its time that all the so-called do-gooders and peace activists see how brutal the Commies were to not only American Soldiers, but any people they attacked, and the U.N. Forces which my dad served in Korea, alongside Canadians, Brits, Greeks, Turks, and many others, as well as the people they murdered for not fitting to "their system", or the Jews the Soviets Murdered under Stalin and Khrushchev, the Priests and Ministers who were exterminated for teaching worship to something other than communism. Well I've said my peace, I still wish you a Happy new year, and may it be a damn sight better than last year.

I was at the Bob Hope Christmas show at Long Bihn in 1967 on Christmas day. I had Guard duty on Christmas eve so I couldn't go with most of the guys from our company that day. By the time I did get there on Christmas Day I was way up in the back and "nosebleed" seats. It was still such a thrill to be there. Racquel Welsh was actually lip sinking Linda Ronstat's (sp?) song (I found out later) but like others have said "who cared?" it was funny and very uplifting to most of us! Bob Hope was always a favorite of mind, but even more after that show! :)

This brings back such strong memories of watching his Christmas specials with my Mom who has been gone for many years. I was in 10th grade when this program aired. At the end when they sing Silent Night...well, I needed a good flushing out of the eyes. You can see a few wiping away tears and I wonder how many of them made it out and are still around. Then when they went into the wards to talk to the injured, another flushing of the tear ducts. I cannot imagine what they went through.

I saw Bob Hope at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina after the Western Carolina football game in 1983. He was 80 yrs old and honestly was kind of frail and not very funny. I understood the importance of this man as I watched him - He was really a legend and I'm so happy I got to see him in person. I just watched this entire video on his 1967 Christmas tour for the troops and found myself tearing up several times. He brought joy to men in combat, a pretty great thing.
