But the Allies fight back with new bases in countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean, new antisubmarine techniques and the new escort, or "jeep", carrier. Thus, the neutralization and destruction of the German U-Boat forces is guaranteed.

I grew up in the fifties and the sixties....my dad had been in the navy during ww2. saw action in the Atlantic and the pacific. I never missed a single episode of Victory at Sea.a lot of steel sunken off the coast of florida, both German and American. the music is great. the main theme played thru the episodes gives the effect of the ocean rising and dropping as the ships move thru the water.. the score was outstanding and directed by one of the best conductors America has ever produced.

Other technics was to use one Pinging DD to trail a UBoat and basically light the UBoat up will 2 to 3 other DDs were on the opposite side of the UBoat looking for the sonar dark spot where the UBoat was. This approach not only gave direction, distance but depth as well. This was like looking into a porch light and seeing a person walk between you and the porch light. A lot of 1st depth charge pattern kills were the results. Some of these attacks used both Hedge hogs and depth set charges/Bombs. One advantage to this approach was the UBoat commander was distracted with the trailing DD and not hearing or seeing the other DDs fast approaching from his Bow. Other Technics would see up to 80 depth charges/Bombs for a single attack. Finally the biggest loss to the UBoats was the crews, like Japan and Pilots, crews could not be replaced as fast as the subs. In fact the Germans were close to keeping up/replacing their losses and increasing their numbers until the end of the war. The allies had the advantage or the US being unmolested and huge training programs. Also the Allies would pull experienced crews and personnel out of combat to train the new crews. So when the Crews entered combat they were the best trained and had the advantage of experienced trainers. Experience Trainers were Force Multipliers.

Heard somewhere that the Hedge Hogs were a better method since unless they hit something they didn't generate any waterborne noise like a depth charge would explode at the depth it was set to and put a lot of noise in the water.

To all those idiots out there complaining about the music, the score was composed precisely for this documentary by Richard Rogers. The film and the music blend perfectly to underscore the subject matter. It remains one of the best documentary series ever put on film. If the music is "too loud" or if there isn't enough action for you, return to your mommy's basement with a bag of Doritos and play "WorldWarCraftZombieSinkembattleship" or some other moron game. This is history, not entertainment for children with the attention span and acuity of a squirrel.

Among the 866 Axis Submarines that lay dead in the Atlantic, U-352 is one of them. U-352 was sunk off the coast of North Carolina - near Moorehead City on May 9th, 1942 by the United States Coast Guard Cutter "ICARUS". 33 Crew Members were captured and became America's first German Prisoners-of-War. The remaining 14 went down with U-Boat & died.

Served on the U.S. diesel boats in the 50's. Don't excuse the Germans from sinking merchants, but we did the same to Japan. Yes I know the Japanese attacked us first. War is war and control of the air and sea are vital if you wish to win. We all want to win.

My dad served on a DE as a carpenters mate. Use to tell a story about death charging a sub one time. Went forward while this was going on the ex asked him why he was forward. Dad says I think the charges are being set shallow. About that time the stern comes out of the water, at least according to dad, the ex turned and walked away.

The CVE was built by Kaiser and did not have a lot of armor. The sailors on board used the CVE initials to mean, "combustible, vulnerable and expendable"

The army had the same problem with the Sherman tank ( the boys called them Ronson's after the lighter whose motto was lights the first time every time) and like the Sherman's had the same advantage that won the war ...fast production and versatility...

Captain Daniel Gallery is the commander of the Guadalcanal. I read a biography of him, and he was quite a character.

He was one of the fathers of modern anti submarine warfare....also by 1944 the convoys were so safe ( relatively) they could actually go on the offensive.. which Capt Gallery had wanted from the beginning..

German submarine sinkings claimed 70% of their crew in WWII compared to 20% in the US service, both were the highest percent of any part of the military... a dangerous business.

A side note. When Victory at Sea was made, Enigma and the code breaking was not known. However, the capture of U505 provided 2 Enigma machines and pages of codes.

By the time the Guadalcanal carrier task force captured U 505 in 1944, the British already had possession of a German enigma machine and had broken its code 3 years before. They were none too happy about Dan Gallery and the US Navy trumpeting this capture, fearing the Germans would now realize that the Allies had Enigma and would change the codes.

The thing this film skips over is that if the German Submarine Admiral would have gotten his way. If Hitler had not thrown away the huge volume of materials , money, and manpower in absolute futile efforts to match, or surpass, the Royal Navy, especially in the flashy show piece huge battleships like Bismark, Turpitz, and others then the German navy would have easily.been able to.build the 300 Subs that Doneitz believed necessary at wars outbreak to.ensure victory for germany. Even though Hitler promised and swore the navy would have 300 Subs by the time germany.went to.war against england, in fact they had less than 60. EVEN THEN, however Germany came EXTREMELY close to sinking enough British ships to starve England and force a surrender, far closer than germany managed in world war one. Winston Churchill himself admitted after the war that the only.thing that truly scared him during the entire war at the height of the battle of the Atlantic before America really began to help, before it's entry into the war when Germany was coming close to winning. If Germany has indeed possessed 300 Submarines at the beginning of the War England would have QUICKLY been starved into.surrender. There is absolutely no doubt of this. The Allied nations, especially england, and The world is just super lucky that while Hitler might have been a genius as a speaker, fooler of people, liar, maybe even politican, he was absolutly.stupid in everything else especially everything military BUT believed himself to.be the best most amazing military mind at least since Napoleon, far brighter than all his stupid generals.like Guderian! Sunan Peebles I've seen references to TBF Avenger torpedo planes locating & sinking various CVE-60 Guadalcanal kills. Instead of torpedos, I think the Avengers were armed with depth charges.

Harry Rockwell, Those were F3F Wilcats (Known as Martingales by the British.) Later in the war, surplus F4F Wildcats were used in the Atlantic as they were being replaced by the F6F Hellcat and the F4U Corsair in the Pacific. Essentially they were used as scouts ahead of the convoys, who would mark the positions of U Boats they spotted for the Avengers to attack with depth charges. They also provided Combat Air Patrols for the convoys to deter the presence of German long range reconnaissance aircraft, such as the Condor.

The Grumman F3F was a biplane, not seen in this video. Its successor was the F4F, a monoplane known as the Wildcat in the USN and as the Martlet in the RN (1:57 &1:59 and 18:53 - 19:13). The "filler" footage was the F6F Hellcat (18:41).

The story is part told by the emotion of the music. But, as a network audio producer of 38 years I can affirm that the mix is off. Part of the reasons that this was produced for larger speakers than your typical smart phone, tablet or PC speaker system. The TV speakers of the day emphasized voice, so the balance wouldnhave been better. The other is that the wanted to highlight the.music.

You fool!! This is one the greatest musical scores ever written for a documentary. Richard Rogers is acknowledged by most musicians as one of the greatest American composers, in addition to being a force on Broadway. This score is once of the basic library I learned when I was studying music. Watch this without sound and then with the score and narration, then tell me which is better. This series is considered one of the greatest television productions ever, as swept every award in the Emmys in its categories the year it was released. My dad, like every other WWII vet I ever knew respected this program and has us watch it on its many reruns. I was born years after this was made and it was still a regular TV fixture every couole of years when I became an adult. Don't make spontaneous ignorant statements. Try to learn something from the knowledge of You Tube instead of mocking. You only embarass yourself, and you'll hopefully regret it in the future.
