Btw answer of you question is that when it's very different for protons and neutrons to stay in nucleus as the size of nucleus is very small & both are repelling each other , so some energy i.e. nuclear energy is used to bind them.

QCD Aur by your explanation(bookish language) I argue that nucleons are of fixed number if we assume that no extra neutron is gained or lose during the splitting. still some of the energy will be lost irrespective of the number of nucleons binded by the strong force.. So, again a question arises What is exactly nuclear for and how does it operate.
