Metal Detecting an Old Farm - Found Huge Silver and lots of coins! | Nugget Noggin

I recently had the privilege to go metal detecting on a farm that dates back to the late 1800's. On this adventure, I searched around the yard of the farm house and managed to dig up some incredible coins. One of them was an 1871 German States Prussia Thaler Coin, which I gave to the family of the farm. I also found several Kennedy Half dollars, a heart shaped locket, 1950's silver dime and lots of other interesting artifacts. Thank You for watching and God bless!

That is a historically significant coin. The German States were united under Prussian rule starting in 1871, and it lasted until 1918 when Germany became a Federal Republic prior to WW I. That coin dates from the first year of the unification of Germany in the German Empire under Emperor Wilhem I. It was probably minted in Berlin. Likely lost by a German immigrant or traveler.

If the coins you find were proof, or uncirculated perhaps extreme handling measures would be in order. Since most of your Finds have been in the earth with natural grit and natural occurring corrosive chemicals for decades I doubt a little rough Handling will be noticed. Still some care of artifacts would be good but would certainly detract from the excitement of your vids. Keep hunting for us who can't and bless you for making Jesus' known and strengthening our faith. You are an example Of good stewardship.

when we used to go coin hunting it seems to never fail someone would tell us of an old farmhouse or place that had bars of gold buried there. One little girl came up to me and ask what I was doing. I told her I was spraying ants. I shouldn't have done that as she went around looking for ants on the ground. :-)

Your German coin was likely brought to the states from German immigrants who lived at the farmhouse. Not surprised you didn't find much silver at the farmhouse. The only time anyone on the farm carried money at the turn of the century was when they were headed to the mercantile in town and losing a dime then was like losing a $20 today. Significant time would be spent looking for it. Nice hunt!

The Thaler, but primarily the Dutch variant, was a common trade coin in our early days as a nation when there wasn't enough "big silver" in circulation to satisfy the needs of our growing economy. The large 8 Reale Spanish coins were used as well, as they were of comparable size and silver value, but it is the Thaler that left the biggest mark. Our word DOLLAR comes from our early Countrymen's inability to correctly pronounce Thaler, and the name stuck!

An experienced guy would not rub a coin with a crusty glove. My only interest is Iron age , Roman and silver hammered . Roman brooches etc Not applicable where you are.
