I hate magic values, I had a spreadsheet of them on one of the projects I worked on. Nulls and filtering all the way

I'm with you. Dealing with null is hard because you have to know what you're doing and remember to accommodate it, but you can learn and/or check the documentation. I have never worked with magic values, but they seem like a recipe for making mistakes. You have to know which values are magic, remember that they exist, and remember which situations you do and don't have to accommodate their magicness. Who is going to remember that 6 months later?
