Mardayin Ceremony 2019. Copyright Numbulwar Culture & Media and Anindilyakwa Land Council 2019.
In the Walgarra (Herring) part of Mardayin, the two skin groups, Mandhirrija and Mandayung, march to the madhalag (beach) to wash off the paint and "smoke" themselves in the water. They call the Lharra (Ceremony songs) as the move into the water. These ceremony songs sign about country, clans and follow the Mardag stories that underpin Mardayin. The two Mardag songlines for the Mandhirrija skin groups are from the Nunggarrgalu and Rami clans. They wash off the paint as the final stage of a 3 month ceremony.
