Why are you spraying on the primer so thin? I think you need a better spray gun that can shoot out at 70 p.s.i. for better coverage. That gun is too weak.

True, the primer is very thin, the gun is very closed, the pressure doesn't seem good to me either. I think they're messing around a lot with this Mustang.

I think that they’re just using it as a sanding coat.

You only normally need a thin coat of primer to highlight any imperfections / flaws that need taking care of. A thicker coat would probably hide some of them meaning than you miss them and you don't want them showing up on the final paint job. Once the imperfections / flaws are sorted, then you can use a thicker coat of Primer :)
