I was there in the 80s as a kid trying to learn licks and leads off tapes from guys like him and Eddie etc. and it was freaking impossible! We had to use tape recorders and slow it down and try that way, but to get something close to what they actually did was an exercise in how much patience and determination you had. Now, we are spoiled by all the instruction there is, but 80s really was the decade of the guitar hero that I don't think will ever be repeated or equaled.

I've always enjoyed Nuno's outlook on learning to play, motivations to play, and having fun doing it. I first recognized him from Do You Wanna Play from the Bill & Ted's soundtrack. I was like 12 at the time. Then my guitar teacher obsessed over the Pornograffitti album. I was hooked on Nuno's phrasing and style while my friends and peers were into much heavier music. They all downplayed Nuno as a Van Halen clone, but I always saw a much more mixed variety of influences in Nuno's work. It's too bad that his musical genre took such a nose dive. Some musicians can remain timeless and release desired material forever no matter what is in style while others end up floating around the fringes unknown to so many non-musical people despite their incredible talents. So many guys like Nuno are washed up or worn out from the life style. I am glad to see he is looking healthy and in control of his life and still having a good time doing what he loves to do.

His greatest skills are being melodic, groovy, heavy and making his hammerons and pullofs sound like they're picked. It's his machinegunstyle-picking as Steve Vai once said about Nuno. Whatever you do, don't ask Nuno about the delay pedal he uses to replicate that double speed thing (old Country guitar player trick, slap back delay, repeat at equal volume. Sounds like you are playing twice as fast). Extreme was playing in Philly around the time of the first album, and me and my buddy, who is an INSANELY great guitar player, were backstage (a friend was the tour manager for Junkyard at the time and they were on the bill) and my friend asked Nuno about his delay setting and Nuno FREAKED OUT!! Yelling at my friend, my friend yelled back, it turned into a thing. As we were leaving the venue and walking to our car, we see Gary and Nuno just in front of us, walking to their hotel around the corner. They keep looking back at us and finally Gary slows down a little and comes back to us, in an effort to cool the tension (but there was none on our end, we thought it was hilarious Nuno freaked out). Gary came back and said "Sorry about that guys, he can be a bit temperamental. Its been a long day etc....) YEARS later, our friend Richie Kotzen was talking to Nuno somewhere and Philly came up and Nuno related the story to Richie. Richie started laughing saying "That's hilarious! Those guys are friends of mine".

He's so right about the rat pedal.. All tube amps are very loose at the bottom end they weren't made to be distorted.. Eddie Van Halen used to use an EQ in the front to get rid of the bass and tighten it up. it's always been attract to take a distortion pedal and put it in the front end but turn the distortion all the way down THE TRICK IS TO USE THE THE TONE KNOB LIKE AN EQUALIZER TO TIGHTEN UP THE BOTTOM END. and of course you can also push the front end of the tube amp for more distortion. As a tube amp builder I fix this I strip out all the base inside the tube amplifier so I don't need to have anything in the front end to tighten up the bass. This is another reason why stock amp modelers sound so crappy. People don't realize you need to put a pedal in front of them a virtual pedal inside the modeler to tighten up the bottom end just like Nuno does.. ;)

I'm his generation. Playing since 79 I learned mostly off records & can relate to trying to learn songs the right way & being successful most of the time but since then have seen that some of the time I was wrong adding in little things to cover space that the bass player or some effect would fill on record that today you can isolate the guitar. But it did develop me doing it my way. Kids starting today are so informed & are great but it does stunt their guitar growth I think.

I agree. By any means, everyone is free to ask whatever, but I think that by 2018 these notions should be out there, somewhere on the internet. If I could attend to a clinic, I personally would like to know a little more about the artist, his philosophy, the way he approaches music composition and stuff like that.... Guitar technique and gear are not an issue anymore in these times of advanced technology, compared to the 80s.

Dubshock Media Really? I didn’t think so. Nuno answered it perfectly. I know you look at Nuno as some kind of Shaman for your meaningless life and are looking for someone to fill you with philosophical mumbo jumbo to make you feel enlightened, but “what kind of gear do you use to get your sound” is something a lot of young guitarists want to know to help them in their tone journey. Don’t be such a sensitive little snowflake.

3:07 Which is precisely why so many players don't have developed ears or a sense of imagination. They simply plug in how to play something, copy it and think they have gained something. Learning by ear is more exploratory thereby making you a better musician. It's no secret why no good music is being made.
