I wish the west and the modern world in general would stop clinging to the idea of personal happiness above all else; it's good to focus on yourself from time to time, but humans are naturally social creatures. Some things should be sacrificed for the greater good. There is much to be gained from collective happiness.

The mystery ship is implied to be the Titanic, both in the film and the book, although some of the details differ from what actually occurred. Bear in mind that the original story was written about 100 years ago, so the sinking was quite a recent event, still fresh in everyone's mind.
