Exactly this. The only involvement of Selim in the matter was when he was sent, along with Sokollu Mehmed Paşa, to subdue Bayezid's rebellion. In defeat, Bayezid fled to the court of pretty much his father's worst enemy. From there, Selim wasn't involved in things at all. It was his father who had to wager a heavy price before the Shah of the Safavid Court let an Ottoman executioner inside the prince’s cell.

@@freyjia5067 So, the title of kalfa can be roughly translated to "apprentice" while kâhyâ is closer to "steward", which I think helps to clear things up a little? It comes down to a matter of age as well as experience, particularly since Canfeda is, at times, described as Radiye's "younger counterpart".

The fact she could wipe her tears and go straight faced that quickly should've been a giveaway to selim that she was lying. Or at the least is very good at it. Oh well, karma came back to bite him when he died and she hides his body in an icebox for over a week to enthrone their son. In real history there's speculation that they had an argument that lead to him getting drunk and falling down the stairs or that she pushed him but nobody really knows.
