Von Paulus only had hopeless options, why someone call him a traitor is beyond me, it is nonsense, his own death (suicide or fighting to he death, with NO weapons left) would not have helped anyone

Hitler knew that if the German people found out Paulus, the commander of the German 6th army, the most decorated army in the Wehrmacht, surrendered, it would be a defeat from a political point of view. Goebbels propaganda machine tried to paint the destruction of the 6th army as a “heroic sacrifice” that tied up many Soviet troops, which was true, the tying up Soviet troops part, not that they were heroically sacrificed.

@oktav1970 The Heer was a separate entity which Hitler bartered their loyalty evidenced in his rise and rule of the Third Reich (e.g. sacking popular Generals who enjoyed their pensions). Many Generals shared retreat (not defeat) in the East to regroup - a weakness to Hitler saw. Paulus was not a Nazi which is important. Paulus situation was hopeless. Russians terms were generous. Remember, Helmut Weilding became Russian POW after surrendering Berlin and convicted for not surrendering sooner.

The sixth german army was unprepared for the fight in Russia.they didnt have proper winter uniforms and they were nearly out of food and and they were soon low on ammunition, thus paulus and his generals faced the fact they couldn't win against the soviet army thus the sixth army was in a hopeless position and they one by one surrendered to the soviet army among them Paulus who Hitler hoped would shoot himself, paulus was found in a department store and taken to be questioned.

@@Crabby303 well he did lie to the mothers and father of Germany that their sons were being treated well as prisoners of war knowing full well that they were not. Only 10 thousand men returned. He never returned to west Germany while others that gave evidence did. Why is that, ask yourself that? It is you that is a troll. BTW limerick is not only referred to as a location on a map. It's a style of a poem. He was a traitor and became a soviet citizen. If he had any balls he would of ordered a break out or shot himself.

Limerick Lad there is no way he could have lived a peaceful life in West Germany, not after allowing his soldiers to be treated in such an ill manner after laying down arms ~ then of course not telling the truth about it as mentioned.
