Nuremberg Day 8 Concentration Camp Film

On Nov. 29, 1945, the eighth day of the Trial, there was a dramatic change in the nature of the presentation of the Prosecution: a film on the Nazi concentration camps. Associate Prosecutor James Donovan introduced the film. Some observers thought it was perhaps the most powerful and moving evidence of the Trial. The graphic portrayal aroused strong emotions in the defendants' dock.
The film was compiled from motion pictures taken by Allied military photographers as the Allied armies in the West liberated the areas in which these camps were located. The narration was taken from the military photographer's notes.

That soldier only witnessed what a big health disaster looks like. Certainly impressive and horrific, but absolutely not an atrocity. Hardly a surprise anyway. Nothing else to expect when you've just bombed a country back to the Stone Age for several years. What Allied soldiers saw in those camps was merely the sanitary result of their own countries' bombing policy during WWII.

What gets me is the bulldozer at the end. Even though the liberators presumably wanted to treat the dead bodies with some dignity, just the sheer of volume of bodies made it impossible in practical terms. I have been reading and studying about this for 20 years and I still can't believe people actually did this. People sat around planning this, orchestrated the logistics, experimented with the best chemicals, competed with each other to lean into this the most and had cigars and cognac at Wansee when they got other people to go along with them with these plans. The majority were Jews as they were the first group targeted, but by 1945 the Nazis also targeted Polish, Russian, French, Romani (Gypsies), Gay people, Slavs, Africans, Orthodox Catholics, etc. My great grandfather was captured after Poland was defeated early in the war and was sent to Stalag II-B to be used as slave labour until the end of the war, he was in the Polish infantry and wasn’t Jewish, but his treatment wasn’t so dissimilar. He was liberated when his camp was found by the red army.
