Worked in aged care for 2 years and I don’t think there’s much difference between agency nurse and permanent staff, the good thing about being permanent is that you know your patients so that makes it easier. The facility I worked in usually had AIN’s who were competent to give medications so incase you are busy and someone needs medications that can administer they would just call you to give the go ahead. Some facilities are very good, others too can make you cry throughout the shift .

Ooooh my goodness girl, I am a licensed medication aide at the US, basically I give meds help the RN to do a few minor treatments and all. I am glad I will continue with the same when I land. Sorry for the bad night shift experience. Night shift is the same every where. We have 1 or 2 nurses and 1 medication aide in a facility of 120 residents.

I know… I am so used to doing 35 to 40 residents. As a Medications aide we give meds including narcotics, do a few minor treatments:..it’s not that bad lol

The experience is the same with the UK! The 'Challenges' varies from one to another. Night shifts with 40 resident is the norm in some carehome in the UK
@NurseDeo6 ай бұрын
Really? I never had that o Hmmmm 40???

@NurseDeo It happens, this care home nursing is so dynamic. I have been to an agency night shift that scared me so much. The care facility has 4 buildings in the compound, it was infact like an estate owned by one company. 1 building was the largest and had 4 units inside, the 2nd building was not so big but had 2 units in it. The other 2 buildings has only a single unit each. It was a total of 142 residents that night and Each unit had not less than 22-23residents. The least was a cottage with 16 residents. They have only 3 RNs and 1 Clinical Lead and more Carers as permanent staff. So they keep requesting agency nurses to help cover every week. I resumed that shift and got 35 residents as nursing and the rest residential. Each unit has 1 carer to take care of the residents, total of 8 carers and 1 carer a floater going to Each unit to pair up and assist with heavy turns and care. Then one RN (which is me) 😂😂😂😂 The RN holds the phone 📱 and the keys of each unit medicines locker. The carer in each unit calls if anything happens. That phone kept ringing all night and I kept walking from one unit to another, from one building to another and it was a very cold night. I had so many cases - 3 falls, catheter blockage, so many Insulins to give, 2 were on NG and peg feeding and 3 were on End of Life pathway. I was on my feet all night till morning. I finally made it out alive and refused to ever go back there because it is a lot 😂😂😂😂
