Nursing school is way too hard. Especially if you have family in the mix. Before I started my wife and I were on board and since getting in one of the biggest challenges has been balancing family life while also working a full time job. To anyone considering nursing and have a family please know that in most cases your signifant other will not understand or be convinced that you need to be sleeping if you're not studying and studying if you're not sleeping. Hope my marriage survives this final semester as we also have 4 beautiful children who'd be devastated if we didnt and bc I know that once I get my life back things will be better. Wish you all the best and esp those that are trying to maintain family as well...

You're lucky if you have professors who want you to succeed. At my program, some of the responses we were given:"I don't know how you passed my first exam.""Nursing isn't for you.""You aren't emotionally reasy for my clinical. You need to goto the psychologist." 34 chapters on the first OB exam; 10 out of 45 passed. It's truly frustrating when all you're told is "read the book." You hit the nail on the head with this.

As a nurse I can understand where your coming from But...But...its nursing school. Its not supposed to be easy. Not everyone can be or is supposed to be a nurse... Yes they want you to pass the NCLEX but Med school wants the docs to pass their state boards too. We are, as nurses, responsible for the care of human beings. The livelihood of the patients we care for depends on us, especially if your in a critical care setting. Ive been a nurse since 03 (worked in cardio ICU, PACU and SICU and was a unit manager) and it seems like the graduates these days are very nonchalant and don't completely understand the responsibility that comes with being a nurse. Hospitals are also letting new nurses work in the units and other critical care areas with absolutely no prior experience but thats another story... If you get thru nursing school and pass your boards...the learning doesn't end there.

I'm saying NRSNG has helped me even working as a CNA working with nurses who are teaching me along the way. They are impressed with what I know even some instructors are as well. I'm older so I tell them it's nothing they taught per se but what I've learned from NRSNG. A couple of my instructors have used their materials and are very happy because we understood what they taught. The bureaucracy of nursing school is crazy and that's why there's such burnout afterwards because of the lack of real knowledge they are equipped with past the NCLEX! Once again thanks for your honesty and with only two semesters left I will continue to utilize your knowledge

say it nurse bass. it's rediculous how some of these instructors like to manipulate the tests. I also feel that a 20 year nurse should not have to do unrelated prerequisites to further her nursing degree , but that's a whole other discussion. 😁 keep grinding my brother

Hey there. What specifically do you mean by "manipulate the tests"? That's worrisome

Well, maybe "manipulate" is a poor choice of words, but I have seen some instructors that seem to relish in the fact that they can catch you off guard and trip you up. These types of instructors make it even harder.

My nursing program wasn't hard, but it was massive amounts of filler. When a leader in the nurse training programs came to our class the last week of the program and explained that it was "about the money", it finally became clear. But our tuition had already been paid, and it was too late to get our money back. Where I live now, the local university nursing faculty has a reputation for waiting until the last semester of the program to fail good students in one class, if an instructor doesn't like them. But both the College and the University nursing programs here are ridiculously easy to get into. Applicants only need 70% in Chemistry and Math 11, and Biology 12, which are the only prerequisites...So very nice people keep paying the tuition, and are either failed in one class in the last semester, or else most leave nursing in less than two years due to the bullying. Meanwhile crowds of people are applying to the local nursing programs, ready to pay their tuition... "It's about the money"...

Hey Nurse Bass, thank you for shedding light into this topic. I 100% agree with you. Nursing school shouldn’t be this difficult...at all... and I’m certain there are many other flawed programs, mine included. Too much to go into detail but myself and several other students are unhappy with what’s occurring and frustrated because we feel powerless and don’t know who to talk to about this.

Thank you! I failed a final semester hemodynamic monitoring exam today. Missed the mark by just a couple questions. I knew the pathophys, scored high on all the practice quizzes I took, was able to accurately teach the material back, but still...on almost all questions I missed, narrowed the possibilities down to two...ultimately failing the test. I've been crying for hours off and on, and stumbled onto your video. Thank you for just validating that this shit of intentionally trying to stump us is a bit ridiculous (I'm being nice) haha!

its very true, even here in the uk, the theory from uni does not match the knowledge we need to know for placement and therefore when we graduate and work. I'm finishing 2nd year and this year it's became more and more apparent that the university course does not teach you how to be a nurse but it teaches you how to teach yourself how to be a nurse. I've only got one year left then that's me finished and I feel as though I still don't know what I'm doing half the time

idk our exams here in new zealand are nowhere near as in depth as the nclex but as far as we know the exam was always to test our level of competence and patient safety. It was hard and i guess i always expected it to be...i worked with some canadian nursing students who demonstrated incredible knowledge of bioscience and pharmacology and i really admired that because i felt our institute was failing us in the aspect but feels great to have passed and be working on a surgical ward as an otorhinolaryngology nurse! Great to follow your journey!

They do make it hard. For those trying to get in school. The entrance exam can be challeging if especially if they have never taken A&P. so they should either offer some sort of tutoring class for their entrance exam at the school or study material. They say it is a shortage of nurses.

i just want to make it into a nursing school. all schools only care about looking good, even elementary, middle, and high schools teach to the test. networking is hard when you have absolutely no experience beyond the anatomy and physiology classes ive already passed. nobody wants to work with a 20 yr old who is still in school.

Nursing school gives a new meaning to the word, HARD. By the time I graduated from my university last year, we had lost over 20 people from the original cohort. Above all, the school wants to protect itself by maximizing it's accreditation.

Just started nursing school after completing a non-healthcare career of 20 years. My perspective is fresh, intelligent, and refined. This video is spot on. We have BSN master degree nurses in the university who think they are NCLEX queens and take pride in their bs questions. The actual medical knowledge is sadly lacking. What did nurse instructors do before sending students to KZbin, etc for case studies, etc.? I see how the older "diploma" nurses are actually better educated than the nurses being mass produced today. P.S. NRSNG is divine!

Preach 🙌🏼 it's so crooked. If it weren't for the few amazing clinical instructors who became personally invested in our learning, I would've given up. The lecture portion of nursing school feels very much like we're only there to learn to pass NCLEX, not to learn how to be great nurses. Thanks for the video. 👍🏼

I completely agree with every word you said. I'm currently in my last year and have dealt with a lot of this. I've thought about this too, and like you, I hate how nursing school is mainly geared towards passing an exam. I think anecdotal evidence won't be too credible, but I've realized that nursing school is situational. I would say nursing school does prepare a few things: helps you decide on a specialty, pass an exam for licensing, and helps you learn patient safety--in essence--how not to kill someone lol. I think most schools make a subject, like pharm, really difficult b/c it really is a difficult subject and they want you to experience how stressful/demanding it is to be a nurse (similar to doctors, they need to study study, know all the details blah blah). In my opinion, I think they over prepare you b/c it's better than under preparing. In terms of preparing for the real world of nursing, I think it could be due to clinical exposure. My friend did an accelerated program whereas I did a regular 3 year BSN program; so I had more exposure (?) and I guess I feel more prepared haha. Honestly, not to be mean, but nursing school is "you get what you put in". And honestly, not to bash on NRSNG, but it might seem clearer to understand b/c you are kinda already exposed to pharm. I've used NRSNG myself, and I agree they simplify a lot of stuff, but their pharm videos have some errors (although they do make it easier to understand). Overall, I just think we as nurses need more CLINICAL EXPOSURE & SIMULATIONS during nursing school. Doctors (MDs) have hundreds more of clinical hours, but I feel like nurses spend the most time with patients! haha And I'm sure everyday as a healthcare provider it's a learning experience. At least nursing schools provide a foundation to build on, and I'm sure they are there to prepare you to LEARN & ADJUST for what's thrown at you as an actual nurse.

Hi theree, tbh I feel like, for me, nursing school wasn't hard. Of course, sometimes it's a hell of a lot of material you get and the questions are designed different to see if you really understand the material or if you've just literally memorised everything without understanding it. But I have to say, it wasn't "hard" for me at all.
