TNPrs are stoked when I re-visit and update reviews on firearms. However I don't do this arbitrarily; it has to be warranted. The KelTec SU-16 qualifies. Being one of the first tactical carbines I reviewed, it has always ranked very highly on my list. The SU-16 series is very reliable, accurate enough, super lightweight, and durable. And yet "tactical elite" say it's not good enough. So we have done about ten years of shooting of the SU-16 for this updated review. The ballots are in and we look at again critically at the KelTec offering. Has its image been tarnished with more competition or does it shine bright as ever?

I want something more than a plastic waffle molded rifle that flexes when I grip it. Kel-tec feels cheap, it looks cheap, and I'd be shocked if it can hold up to the abuse of more reputable designs and manufacturers.

Hide your head in shame or carry yourself proudly? In some quarters, especially on the often ego-rife internet, saying you're a fan of the KelTec SU-16 is asking for a flame war. You be told how uninformed and foolish you are for your choice and the get a "real gun." But like many things on the internet, the information is off and has agendas. Derived from a decade of shooting these SU-16s, perhaps it's time for an updated TNP review. Grab the popcorn on this feature length GRV and let's get to the truth! -nutnfancy actual

I'm no gun snob. Nor am I a Kel-Tec hater. I own 2 RFB's. With an RDB on order with my LGS. I absolutely love my RFB's. However I have zero love for the SU-16/PLR-16. And my distaste is with due cause. When the bolt carrier of the SU-16/PLR-16 travels back to far on a cold day. Or any day. And bounces off the back of the receiver. Causing a catastrophic failure by breaking the receiver. Snapping the material just below the upper receiver to lower receiver joint. Then you'll be extremely leery of this rifle too. And I'm not the only one to have experienced this exact same_"phenomenon"_ either. So while some ppls experiences will be very positive with the SU/PLR-16. Mine have placed this rifle (_SU-16C _) in the category of dangerous junk!

My first rifle. SU-16C. 10 years Active Duty Army (9 of which I was an armorer), went to the sandbox with an M16A2.After I decided to buy a rifle I spent 2 years doing homework on rifles, learning about AR15's, all the options available for the platform and all the ins and outs (yes an M16 is an AR15, but an AR15 is not an M16). More than happy with it.I had some things I disliked about it. spent a little time and money on it and love it now. Things I recommend for anyone who owns the 16C. Polish the sear/trigger. replace the rear peep with a Tech Sight rear sight (I bought just the base and a few parts and made a custom M16A2 type rear sight) and a sling. I did have a problem where the barrel came misaligned from the factory (causing my zero to be to the far left limit of the peep sight). I sent it back to Kel-Tec and they fixed it. Never had any issues with it, lightweight, compact (27 inches folded with my M4Sd II) Love it. Light weight makes it way easier to make consistant standing long range shots and easy enough for my son to shoot standing unsupported.

How is the cheek weld when using optics on this stock configuration if you don't mind me asking?
@bimbim18ok
@bimbim18ok 9 ай бұрын
@@VLK-73 My SU-16C is very heavily modified but very minimalistic so there's less parts to fail (keeping a light-weight reliability theme). No Optics, I use a self-made sight system that's pretty much half parts from the 'tech-sights' SU-16 aftermarket sight system, the other half of the parts from an aftermarket M16-A2 sight system for the rear so it keeps the low 1" height over bore the SU-16C comes with, but it's adjustable with just knobs and without tools. Front sight post is a modified meprolight AR-15 tritium AR-15 sight post (They're not the same but an AR15 front sight post is easy to dremel down to fit the SU-16). With a 1" Height Over Bore (versus an AR15's typical 1.5"-1.6" HOB) I have to lean my head very low and tilt it forward a lot to get sight picture but that also says a lot considering I'm a pretty short dude (5'5"). It doesn't bother me. If you plan on running a red dot it will NOT co-witness. That being said I would consider a riser for a more upright head position if I went that route. I run a 2.26" height over bore on my AR15, about a 3/4" riser under my red dot but different uses. My AR is a CQB set-up, I don't plan on ever shooting it prone, while my SU-16 feels at home in the prone. There are also hollow risers you can see through that you should be able to use your irons as backups with if your red-dots fail.

I picked up one of these ~ 5 years ago as my first 5.56 rifle and never regretted it. One of the things I really like about it (besides its compact size and light weight) is the reliability. I've intentionally neglected it (and a subsequent piston AR) for ~ 7-8 months during a move and then took 'em out to the range just to see how they tolerated neglect. The SU-16 just up and fired without a hiccup; my AR didn't care for the neglect. Yup, bug out POU indeed!

One nice feature he forgot to mention is that the CA model can carry a 30 round USGI mag in the buttstock intead of the two 10 round mags. Bottom plate facing toward trigger, and rounded side down. With a mag coupler and the magazine in the stock, you could have 90 rounds when you pick up the gun for home defense.

90 rounds for a home defense rifle? surely you jest. feel free to post an account of someone using a rifle with a 30 round magazine for home defense who had to do a mag change. and don't try and twist it into some type of anti-gun argument on my side, I'm in no way saying you shouldn't be allowed to run a home defense rifle with six 40 round p mags. I'm saying it's stupid to do so.
@bertolfyn
@bertolfyn 8 жыл бұрын
I would rather have enough or more than needed than be found lacking. Since I won't be hiking with the thing, the weight is not an issue. When you hear that noise down stairs you never know what you are walking into. In this area there are many accounts of home invasion robberies where you will be encountering 3-6 home invaders. It is highly unlikely I would be able to stop 6 invaders with 6 rounds. While this doesn't translate to home defense, keep in mind the US General Accounting Office says the military used 250,000 rounds per kill in Iraq and Afghanistan. So 90 seems reasonable to me.

Because I watched these video's (and the few other on the tube) and did some more research, I decided to go with the "Charlie" model. They were difficult to find a few years ago, but I think I received a decent price. It is a very fine weapon! It's so lightweight, yet surprisingly solid (especially with stock out), plus the mags fit well, and are easy to install, etc, etc... It's accurate enough, no jams (so far), Thanks Nutn, for these great videos! p.s. I also had a Keltec pistol long ago, that truly sucked. I'm glad that gun didn't cloud my future decisions...

Living in Austria severely limits one's options on firearms of this kind, we're definitely no semi auto rifle kinda culture, but after your glowing review of the SU 16 I decided to take the discount offer of one seller here that sold a SU 16 CA for 750€. I'm extremely frugal with money but for a while I've wanted to own a decent rifle, just as a form of insurance should society actually collapse one day. Took the rifle out to a range yesterday for the first time, not a single issue within the first 120 rounds I've shot with it! (Didn't get more shots in in my time slot, austrian gun ranges suck lol) EDIT: About 1200 rounds in now and I am loving this rifle! The only two malfunctions I've had overall were failures to feed and that only on the stock magazines. It's a rifle you have to put some work in to get it up to a certain standard: - rear iron sights are not ideal so you could either just deal with them (and add threadlocker to the windage screws), get the aftermarket Tech Sights for about 70$ or just get an optic. - get Magpul P-Mags! Stock mags are handy but I wouldn't trust my life on their reliability, I'm planning to ditch them in favor of a small first aid kit in the stock instead. - gotta DIY a picatinny rail on the handguard if you want to mount a light on it If you're living outside the US you might be SOL when it comes to buying Kel Tec parts. I've wanted to buy the sling adapter from Kel Tec but they don't deliver outside the US, when I asked them where I could get it in Europe they told me to contact a certain wholeseller which then informed me that they don't sell to individuals and waiting times for Kel Tec parts can be up to two years. Made a classic M16 style sling adapter from 2 nylon dog collars for 2€ and fixed that problem haha

Great video....love your work. I have the CA model and love it. It has been completely reliable and it's fun to shoot. It is a special purpose rifle ...a niche rifle imo. Mine weighs 4lbs 12oz (no optic, no mags no sling) and folds up to a compact 24 inches. Great for the boat, trailer, RV, truck or pack. I painted mine with Krylon camo paint for a few bucks. Turned out pretty good and when it wears off, I will re-paint it.

Having bought a SU-16 Ca compliant five years ago and living in CA. It now has over tenK rounds through it. I have only had many 15to 17 malfunctions and all of those are with steel cased ammo when the rifle was dirty as hell. She still head spaces with no way to close on a no-go or a field gauge. I replaced the springs at 7500 k rounds. Painting her in a home job Krylon forest pattern was perfect. Put a primary arms 5x ACSS scope in her and can hit out to six hundred yards consistently with the reticule only. Just wave a dope card written on the stock but know where to aim with out thinking. I only wish the bipod locked when open This is one Rifle that I will never get rid of. Just light and will fit in a tennis bag or a large back pack making travel unobtrusive and perfect for as a Bug out bag She weighs 6.9 lbs lbs with glass and three ten round which mags makes easy carry. The round stripper clips make for quick reloading of the mags. Shoots great with most 62gr brass ammo. Runs about 1.5 to 2.5 moa with glass depending on ammo. Best is with Home load 77 gr ammo or federal 68gr MK’s at just over 1 moa. Does it suck? Hell no no at all. More accurate than a lot of Ar’s.

Regrettably, the rifle would hold much potential in the Canadian market as it is classified as a regular firearm and not heavily regulated like an AR15 that has the same legal classification as a handgun. The problem however is that the Canadian version (with a 2" longer barrel for legal purposes) sold for $799 plus 13% tax, making it almost double your price point, and that's before our dollar dropped to about 2/3 the value of the USD. That's a lot to pay for a polymer rifle that doesn't feel very rugged in the hand, whatever its actual reliability. Another semi-auto that takes .223 with AR mags even in it's Canadian price point would probably become a best seller up here.

+Thermopylae2007 I feel your pain brother... I really do. The sad thing is that Canada (and I'm generalizing here, because Canada is fucking huge, and contrary to most people's understanding, Canadians don't hang out at the same bar in "downtown Canada") is such a cool place, with such cool people, but politics wise, the ruling class wants to keep total control. Anything in the hands of the citizens that might be used to keep the elites in check must me outlawed. On the other hand, I'm jealous that you guys get such cheap SKS's. :)

It's 2020 and I took my CA model to the range again this week. I still love it and I still think of it as my go to long gun, home, truck, backpack. I upgraded the screws, replaced the take down pin with a lynch pin with ring, installed AK spring for the bipod and upgraded the trigger. I disagree with your favorite model. The CA is mine and the reason is two 10 round mags (or one 30) in the buttstock. Thanks for the videos.

I have had a PLR-16 for about 10 years. I noticed before I went to shoot it the first time that there was a crack in the mag well at the barrel nut. I called Kel Tec's support and they paid for the shipping and had the gun fixed and back in a couple of weeks. I put the buffer tube for the SU-16E and a KAK Shockwave brace on it and LOVE IT! The only bad thing I can say about it is that when its against you're cheek the recoil feels weird. I put a Holosun 503G on it and have had it as my home defense weapon.

Tech sights does make a rear peep sight for this gun. Nutn how did you miss that dude? I purchased my su-16 on your recommendation it has roughly 2500 round thru it with only three hiccups of Tula ammo (about 500 steel case shot of that 2500 est.). It is one perfect California option! I have the Tech sights su-16 rear peep with flip aperture likability 9 of 10 losing one point for being slightly taller then it needs to be. Sitting above is a 1-4x -Burris Mtac (not the best scope a Weaver 1-5 or 1.5-6 would be better) the rings are .80" see thru rings so I can use either scope or peep at will. It does create some cheek rest issue so I gorilla taped a short strip of foam pad to the but stock, helped allot. Best part. With a strait tube objective and at that ring height I can field strip the riffle without touching the scope, thank God! Another irons option would be XS sights low Weaver back up. I do not have experience with that specific sight but I am certain it would work and I believe that it has a slightly lower profile theoretically allowing slightly lower rings. More simple in design and lighter weight there is not doubt the the Tech sights are the more durable of the two. I do also have the Redlion Forend. It is free floated, well made and it made my gun heavier in the worst place. I can take or leave it likability 8 of 10. It makes more sense for Californians who are using the su16 as an Ar substitute. It is still heavier then it needs to be.

My tan-stocked SU-16C with an Anderson A2 flash hider, an inexpensive CenterPoint red dot, and a 30 round GI magazine loaded with generic 55 grain FMJ Winchester .223 ammo weighs 6 pounds 4 ounces. If things go to shit, after I put on my body armor and tac vest with 8 - 30 round magazines for the SU-16C, S&W SD9 w/3 spare magazines, Motorola radio, and camelbak, plus some other stuff, a lightweight rifle is a bonus. I also have a drop leg holster for a Makarov PM, too. Before anyone starts nodding knowingly and saying "tacticool dude," I'm a retired US Army Armor officer that started as an enlisted man and was an instructor at Fort Knox as an NCO. Since my wife has a chronic illness that makes "bugging out" a non-starter, I'm in a "fort-up and stay" situation. I have other rifles, but the SU-16C is the first one I go for.

Funny thing is, I don't see where Kel Tec said this was a "tactical" or "combat" rifle at all. I don't imagine they meant it to be adopted by an state military or police. It uses AR magazines and 1913 rails for convenience, nothing more. Taking a gun not designed to be a combat rifle and trying to compare it to an AR is stupid.

I have had a number of Kel-Tec pistols and they always worked well, even if they are ugly. I wouldn't keep them if they didn't work. Really with a CCW, carrying an expensive gun is stupid. They get banged up, and if you end up having to use it, it will probably be taken away by the police. If you have experience with Kel-Tec and it was bad, then I understand. If you are repeating the stupid crap people online like Yanker Marshall says then you are a 'tactical elitist' or a troll. And name calling and schmeckle measuring online only proves that point.

I've owned an su16c for several years with the pistol grip and adjustable stock, have to say it's a great little carbine. I've run a crap load of rounds through it, square range and CQB training and have never had an issue. I polished the bolt and carrier a little when I got it to simulate running a couple thousand rounds through it and this thing is very reliable. I don't care what anyone says, the weight of this carbine is much less than the AR platform and is very fast bringing to bear on target. That said, my AR is a primary defensive/offensive weapon but the Kel Tec is my selection for the go bag.

Four year later update: I ended up buying the tan CA model with the tight magwell. I haven't put ten thousand rounds through it or anything, but in the few hundred rounds I've shot it's been very reliable. I had a couple of stovepipes and failures to extract in the very beginning (like the first few magazines). After a few mags (and a cleaning, though not convinced it was the cleaning that did anything) it has functioned just fine-- I can't remember having a malfunction since. I've been shooting American Eagle 55gr and recently some AAC 77gr SMKs. Accuracy has been pretty poor: I took it to a proper outdoor range the other day and attempted to zero it at 50 yds. I'm using a Holosun 510C with a Holosun HM3X magnifier. My gun just doesn't group well-- I would say about 4-6 MOA based on my results while trying to zero shooting from the bipod at 50 yards. It doesn't seem to have a preference between 55gr and 77gr: they both group poorly. Trying to zero was frustrating: I spent probably 60 rounds trying to coax a good, centered group out of it and just couldn't make it happen. As a control: I zeroed a Steyr Scout on the same outing and shot a 1" group the first time, and had no problems dialing in a 50 yard zero within about ten rounds. And that was just shooting PPU M80 ball-- not exactly top-shelf stuff. That said: although the accuracy is not great, it's also not terrible. I can easily hit the man-sized steel targets they have set up at ~115 yards and 200 yards. So is the accuracy a problem? Probably not for self-defense purposes. You probably shouldn't be taking long-range shots in a self-defense context anyway. For hitting man-sized targets within 100 yards this thing should have no problems at all. I'm using mostly Lancer mags with the gun now: they fit pretty well and almost drop free. The factory mags are still absolutely useless in the gun: once you install one its basically a fixed magazine and it's super hard to get a grip on them to remove them. PMAGs, Lancers, and GI mags all work great. I have a weird issue with one Lancer mag where the mag won't lock the bolt back on empty, but whatever. Overall I like my Kel Tec. I still think it's a great choice for people in ban states-- way more functional than a fixed-mag or featureless AR build if you're planning to use the rifle for self-defense. I've since moved to a state where I could just build an AR, but I won't be trading in the Kel Tec just yet: it's a fun little gun and I like having it around. If I do build a more serious rifle at some point, I'll probably just migrate my accessories over and buy a micro-dot for the SU-16 and revert it to an ultra-light configuration. I think this is probably the best way to enjoy the rifle.

My intention on getting one of these is for a backpack gun to throw in the truck in a backpack for any shtf situations. Although I have a Colt 6920 and a DD M4V7, this Keltec fits a niche for an inexpensive rifle to pack for everyday excursions where things could go very sideways. A friend of mine bought one for this exact reason and he can fold it up and put it in a duffle bag, backpack, etc and he keeps it in a locked box under his back seat where it can’t be stolen.

I have a Kel Tec SU-16A in black. An no it does not suck and I would trust my life to my SU-16A. Also own a Bushmaster XM-15 QRC. I like both carbines/rifles. Can't really compare the two except they're both 5.56mm/.223 and each will accept a 30 round magzine. For a survival gun, either one would work well. One is about as accurate as the other. The Bushmaster might be slightly more rugged than the Kel Tec, but then again, I'd not bet a lot of money on that statement. Either weapon will take down deer sized game if need be. I paid more for the Bushmaster, maybe a hundred bucks more. What can i say, I like 'em both.

To add to the discussion, this is a great carbine for a college student who wants a rifle, but doesnt wanna spend more than $500 for an AR. Picked up the A model at a Sportsmans for $450, and it's run flawlessly since. Put a cheapo Amazon RDS on it, and you're ready to go. I've only had a few issues, such as the stock magazines falling out when shooting and the gun needing some excess trimming down with an exacto knife, but after a couple modifications, and buying a few gi mags, the gun runs perfectly, and i've ran about 400 rounds through it as of now. The built in bipod, while cool, can be forgotten, but there is a mod online that makes it spring loaded which I want to try, and the iron sights are just ok. But since its CA compliant, I can bring it back home to have more fun with my dad. 9/10, would recommend, just need to run it a bit

Truly appriciate the video, in Canada the AR 15 is considered restricted so I can't just head out to the bush and shoot it, the SU 16 is Non Restricted and can be used anywhere on crown land, carried in your truck without having to be going to an approved Range and is available in an AR style housing now. Expensive at 1100.00 dollars but I think our best option for an AR style rifle that is classified Non Restricted. It can utilize 10 round pistol magazines which are legal here otherwise we are restricted to 5 rounds for Center fire rifles which is a gigantic feature. Again, much appreciated for the video, this helped make up my mind and I haven't been disappointed.

Almost got lost with all the old comments. Doing great Nutn. Regarding the trigger, the safety button placement is fairly common. I improved the "hole" side. Use a .22 case and JB Weld. A .25 should work but I used the JB in the hole then fit the .22 case in the hole about flush and cleaned it up. You can even find a case with your initial (limited to brand names) or customize by using a small stamp to add your initial. The case is an improvement. Still working on adding about a 1/4" length to the bolt hold open button. JB'ed one the first time but it did not hold. Might tap a hole and add a screw mod'ed with a file as 2nd try. As noted with yours, no supplied sling holds. I use a Home Depot pin to replace the takedown pin with a hefty split ring for one end and some high temp 550 type cord for the second end of a 2-point sling. I kept the basic rear sight (it works) and a red dot. Never use the hand guard bipod, it changes zero so I just use a pack or range bag. I do like your paint job but, like you said, it makes it look militaristic. Just keep some camo vet wrap just in case. Here in the PRK, I have a m/brake but keep an old 3-prong (VN) f/suppressor in the case bag (a baseball bag). The old 3-prong is about the cheapest f/ suppressor you can find (sometimes $12 at shows). They were/are effective but the military spread the story about three branches clogging them. With the BS filter on, do a comparison with the Birdcage in the dark and then convince yourself you need to spend $100+ for a fancy one. I think the real reason was too many problems with the M16 forend torquing due to Marines and GI using the 3-prong to snap by twisting the wire off C rat cases. For those of us in occupied states, this light little rifle keeps the inquisition away. Some say my rifle should a real be a battle rifle. Among other things, I say I no longer get into battles but if a fire fight happens, it would be a lot better than rocks...and it is semi-auto too. I also have battle rifles if needed. I find I shoot the SU rifle a lot. It is like the old Timex...it just keeps ticking. Switch off. Semper fi

Love my SU-16C. If I wanted an AR at this weight I would have to drop double the $. Yes it gets hot fast but it can mag dump 2 30 rounders no problem and when as a civy will you need any more than that? The only thing I don't like is that the rear sight has a huge aperture and is very hard to adjust but a budget red dot or the replacement from Tech Sights takes care of that problem. The trigger on mine is faster than my mil-spec AR-15 A3. I would feel more than well prepared with this as home defense. 3-5 rounds in bad guy number 1 and 3-5 rounds in bad guy number 2 no problem. I want to run the 1 through 5 drill with this on a video, I think people would be surprised at how fast it is. The field strip is not really any more complicated than an AR, just different. You can get used to it. Yes I've heard the story of it blowing up, I looked into it, found one story from 2007 and I think the guy was an idiot. He was using old ammo that wasn't stored properly, he included a pic of the ammo box and the cardboard looked very worn, I think he had either a squib or a case fracture. Also, the dude claimed his "cat like reflexes" helped him dodge the explosion. So that should give you an idea of the kind of guy this story came from. Bottom line, you will be very well served with an SU-16, I'm even considering buying a second, maybe a CA this time.

I have a SU-16c And find it to be comfortable, accurate and reliable...and wicked cheap! The field strip is odd. Not an issue for me as I have never cleaned mine! An inadvertent field test for reliability... and it has never failed. I love the weight of it, or lack thereof. I mounted a Vortex Sparc 2 on it and it does just fine. Wanted to keep it light and ultra simple, I run 20 round aluminum GI mags and they are perfect. The bipod feature is cute, but to me, useless. Too wobbly. I think this is a perfect Get-out-of-town gun. Light, quick, reliable, easy to carry, easy to tuck away. Good firepower, accuracy more than sufficient for defensive purposes and the authority of a center fire rifle. Only thing I would want changed is an attachment point for a single point sling. I have an AR, an AK and a Mini 14.. this is the rifle I would bug out with.

My one and only impulse buy ever of a firearm was a SU 16 . I was in a sporting goods shop to buy ammo and the rifle was sitting on the counter on display with it's forestocks folded out into a bipod . After I had handled it and felt how light it was and saw that it would accept AR magazines I bought it too . A couple weeks later is when news of the 10 rd magazine ban ending began to circulate . So it must have been June or so in 2004 when I bought it . A few years later I saw a PLR 16 and bought it Because I was that satisfied with the SU 16 . The trigger broke in the PLR 16 so I SBRed it complete with legal extortion stamp . If I had set out to buy a SBR I think I would go for the 12" version SU 16D12 . But I have no plans on selling either weapon .

I have a C model. I enjoy it thoroughly. Have a cheap red dot on it. It is is money 50 yards and in. I enjoy the ability to transport easily and being able to shot when folded.Some aluminum mags work better than others.Agree about breaking it down. Kind of a pain in the butt......

Word is that Kel Tec has stopped making these (along with the P32) but just hasn't announced it yet. Just liked they've stopped the P3AT, P11 and P9 as well. Very sad, because I think this is one of those guns, especially the C Model, that people will greatly miss and want to own after it's gone.

I currently carry a kel tec of 9 as my concealed edc and have carried it for 4 plus years. I carried a p 11 for about 5 years.kel tec makes reliable weapons and yes I trust my life to a of 9 on a daily basis.lf my security situation changes I'll adjust accordingly.lts nice to see someone on the internet doing honest reviews on products instead of trying to impress the viewers with their choices in the most popular latest and greatest most expensive tactical wonder weapon.

I love my 16C, thanks for the recommendation. I have a Samson Evolution QD mount in the front and a KNS QD adapter on the stock swivel screw. It works great!

I know a guy selling one. the problem with it is the stock was broken in half right at the grip. Im not to sure of it works correctly. If it works with direct blowback vs buffers like ar15 then i could melt the stocks back together and cover the fix up with grip tape or camo tape.

The stocks are super easy to replace and cheap to buy from Kel Tec. Word is that Kel Tec has stopped making these (along with the P32) but just hasn't announced it yet. So I would snag one while you have the chance.

What a complete and great review. Thank you for taking the time to do a follow up. I don't own this rifle but am looking for a rifle to recommend to a friend that has many purposes to fulfill and a budget as well. Nobody wants to spend money on a lemon, great vid.

I was considering a Mini-14 for something to pick up that is compliant in more states (and then possibly not making a ban list in the future). I think I've finally given in, the Keltec is more cost effective and I don't have to get new mags (I've got a few ARs already).
