I normally don’t eat until noon, but that’s because my stomach doesn’t agree with me in the morning so eating is off the table unless I want to suffer with stomach pain and possible vomiting. Love your videos...very scientific...but I do have one question. Eating noon to 8pm isn't really in accordance with latest circadian rhytm research. I read it in a book circadian code that 8am to 4pm or 6pm is more in line with our natural rhytm. That, eating about 2h after waking gives signal to our digestion it is morning, the same way morning light gives signal to other bodily functions it is morning... What is your view on that?

Hello Dr. Mike, first of all thank you for all your great work. It is nice to see that honest physicians like yourself and Dr. Bergman are still out there spreading the truth about Health and Medicine. I am currently in the process of changin my diet and today I suddenly realized there might be a danger with Wild Salmon (radioactive contamination). The Salmon I buy is "Wild Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta)" from Sea Fishing in the North East Pacific (Alaska), FAO 67 As far as I know this region is where pretty much all Salmon we eat comes from (would like to be proven wrong on this one) With the reactor leak in Fukushima and the Marine Wildlife being contaminated with radioactive material, can I safely continue eating above mentioned Salmon or should I be concerned. Are there alternatives? Thank you all, greetings from Germany and stay like you are!
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
I can tell you that I personally consume lots of wild alaskan salmon. It seems like there is always a small hazard of heavy metal or radiation, but this type of fish is the safest in my opinion. The benefits here outweigh the risks for sure.

"Bacterial endotoxins in animal products cause metabolic inflammation and the progression of disease"--This can be surmised from the study, "Increase in Plasma Endotoxin Concentrations... "done by, Husam Ghanim, PHD et al. (2009). Is it safe to say, or do you believe that getting omega 3's from quality sources of animal protein outweigh the negatives of the inflammation caused when these endotoxins are ingested?

hey Dr. Mike, I am doing a morning superfood smoothie with the follow things. Could any of these cause any adverse reaction being blended together or for any other reason? frozen berries (or frozen misc fruits etc.) frozen kale or broccolli or brussel sprouts (I alternate these) gelatinized maca - 1 teaspoon cacao power - 1 teaspoon virgin coconut oil - 1 teaspoon nutritional yeast - 1 teaspoon bee pollen - 1 teaspoon turmeric - 1 teaspoon avocado - 1 small 1 clove of garlic take these outside of smoothie (moreso as experiment to see if it helps my hair) Jamieson Kelp 650 mg - 1 tablet Nettle Root - 500 mg - 1 capsule Saw Palmetto - 500 mg - 1 softgel and... 1 boiled egg Does this look ok? Should I add or remove anything from it? I am thinking of adding the following to this: 1 scoop of whey isolate 1 Tablespoon of grounded flaxseed NOTE: I am not on ketogenic diet and I am not doing intermittent fasting. I am not looking to lose or gain weight. Thanks!

Thanks Dr. Mike. A couple of questions: Is it ok to add whey isolate (or concentrate) to this smoothie especially if I am taking this post-workout? I was talking to a friend who said he takes ginseng instead of maca. What are your thoughts on this? Is there any specific spirulina/chlorella that you recommend? I have ordered the following tablets: Rainforest Foods Organic Combined Chlorella and Spirulina Tablets I don't think I can take this in powder form due to smell/taste. Thanks!

Starting your day with that green juice sounds excellent! However, it wouldn't be appropriate during your fast as it will raise your insulin levels and negate many benefits. What you could do is start your 8 hour eating window with that green juice if you wanted to incorporate intermittent fasting.

However when that happens she looks like a drug addict and I was just about to kick her out of the house because of it. She told me she would try it your way after she watched your presentation. What I was wondering is how long on an average the cur-cumin and fasting it takes before she starts to feel some relief? Sorry I didn't understand your question. What you are actually eating is much more important than the amount. Also, intermittent fasting makes it much easier to improve insulin sensitivity, but you can also do it by restricting simple carbs from your diet and replacing them with healthy fats.

I have been experimenting and doing intermittent fasting and eating within the 8 hour window. I have to be at work at 7:30am. I typically do 30 minute workouts or run between 4-5 miles at 5:15 am. The only problem is that my 1st meal is around 11:30am. I do have bulletprrof coffee on my drive into work. Should I do a different type of intermittent fasting or is it ok to wait hours after working out before I eat?
@DrMichaelVan7 жыл бұрын
Typically I like to refeed after exercise as much as I can. What I would do in this situation is add some collagen (and ideally, cacao) to your bulletproof coffee in order to give your body the building blocks for connective tissue and protein synthesis.

Find what works best for you and just do that. I don't think it should matter exactly how it is consumed, whether it is added as a spice to cooking, juiced, or raw. With that said, make sure to consume it with black pepper to increase absorption.

Like I mentioned in the video, for weight lifters or athletes, up your protein level to the higher ranges I mentioned. Also, you may want to add more low-glycemic carbs if you are trying to put on weight.

It isn't geared toward weight loss, but rather geared to be as healthy as possible. You can use the same ratios for building muscle, you just will require more calories.

First of all, really great videos! Thank you for the effort to explain everything in detail. Very interesting! I have a question. In every ketogenic guide it tells you to basically cut fruit completely, if necessary maybe have a handfull of berries but that's it. They say that the fruit sugar will throw you out of the ketogenic state and yet you say sth else. I love bananas for example, so how does "substracting" the fiber and calculating the NET carb work? I try to keep my carbs below 30g a day and a banana has like 20g....
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
So if you are following a strict ketogenic diet, then that is absolutely true about cutting out fruit. For the average person who doesn't have a major health condition, I recommend limiting net carbs (but not necessarily going full blown ketogenic). In that case, fruit would be a good healthy addition.
@maderiere8 жыл бұрын
Can I ask a question that is probably really silly. Your slide mentioned to limit fructose consumption to under 25mg per day and then towards the slide mentioned that you can have unlimited fruits. How would that be possible?
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
Fruits do have natural fructose, but I was referring to fructose from other sources.
@Interfectio8 жыл бұрын
I heard that you lose muscles if you didnt eat for a long time and then you workout. Also you probably wont be able to do an hard , excessive workout because your not fueled so the calories you burn overall will be lower. So I think its not recommended at all if you want to improve your performance as a runner for example.
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
Physiologically, it is very advantageous to intermittent fast, as you will significantly increase human growth hormone (aka fitness hormone). This hormone helps you stay young and vibrant, recover faster, build lean muscle mass, etc.

Very informative video Dr. Mike. What brand of plant based whey protein do you recommend?
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
Whey protein cannot be plant based, as it comes from milk. I would recommend a grass-fed whey protein, which has fantastic health benefits.

Can you do this while hypothyroid (and all the other issues that encompasses)? Any adjustments you'd recommend?
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Also make sure you are getting high-quality iodine in your diet for proper cellular and thyroid function.

I Don't undurstand dr Witt says to go on plant based wich is probobly high carb and you say to go high fat with animal products ...And you say NET Carbs less then 50 but then you say eat as much fruit and vegtables as you want im a bit confused
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
I agree, it can get confusing. The people we see in our clinic are usually very unhealthy and inflamed at first, therefore we recommend some (not all) to go on a plant based diet temporarily . Plant based diets also are not necessarily high carb (it would depend if you are eating a ton of grains or not). As for net carbs, consuming foods like fruit and vegetables that are high in fiber are great. I would avoid counting calories/carbs/etc, as it is not necessary. Just stick to a diet outlined in the updated food pyramid.

Thanks for these great videos! I'm on IF but I'm not able to workout just before eating my first meal. What do you recommend me, workout fasted but 6 hours before eating, or workout while I'm in my eating window so I can eat just after workout?
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
It is ok if you cannot workout in a fasted state. It is just an option that can enhance your results. Also, the meal after your workout is the most important, so in your case I would workout during your eating window.

Great info and valuable per usual. Thank you! I do have a question regarding Omega 3, as far as i know since Fish oil is considered to be extremely unstable . Is oxidized already in the process of creation , lowers the level of platelet reactivity and slows blood clotting . fish oil has been shown to weakens the immune system by accelerating the self- killing white blood cells . And When taking ALA the body knows how to convert the ALA the amount it needs to EPA and the amount it needs to DHA . So what is the truth here? to take or not to take?
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
I mentioned the truth in the video. That's what the science says. We cannot get all our omega-3 sources from ALA alone. It is obviously important to choose high quality omega-3 products, such as krill.

How do I calculate my total maintenance calories?
@DrMichaelVan7 жыл бұрын
I don't count calories at all. I think counting your macros is way more effective, and you can use a cronometer for that.

What to do if skipping breakfast makes you lightheaded from lack of food?
@DrMichaelVan4 жыл бұрын
Then try skipping dinner. Or, just slowly delay your breakfast meal little by little

Can I use IF for bulking? 16hrs fasting, 8hrs feeding.
@DrMichaelVan8 жыл бұрын
Yes, IF actually stimulates a protein pathway called mTOR which increases protein synthesis. With that said, it is very important you consume a lot of healthy calories during your eating window to stimulate anabolic processes in the body

Most athletes don’t really skip breakfast, they just have late breakfast, aka brunch. “Skipping breakfast” is more like not eating breakfast early.

I recently discovered your channel and I'm learning so much, you're very pleasant to listen to and to look at :D do you think that blood sugar going to low could be a problem when intermittent fasting? Thank you Doctor 😊
@DrMichaelVan7 жыл бұрын
It's a non-issue because even if you were going to do an extended multiple day fast and got low blood sugar as a result, your liver would then ramp up production of glucose to stabilize the levels.
@RunwayIsAwesome4 жыл бұрын
If you’re an athlete like me who do runs and workouts that last longer than an hour, don’t use intermittent fasting! Instead eat a small meal and use energy gels during the run. Intermittent fasting is only effective in certain situations such as losing weight etc. Intermittent fasting is not super effective for those who run marathons. You need food to get the energy you need to get going. The energy from food is more sufficient than the energy from fats stored in your body.

Great talk as usual dr Mike. I see over on dr bergmans channel the comments section on this video has been turned into a cesspit by the vegans. I'm sure you're too polite of a guy to comment but I know you're thinking the same thing ha.

Thank you! That is always the case when I talk about nutrition (or any topic for that matter). The way I look at it is if you do not have any 'haters,' you are not making a big enough impact in the world. They want you to respond, but there will never be an answer that satisfies their needs.
@backfru7 жыл бұрын
why do you say canola oil is toxic?
@DrMichaelVan7 жыл бұрын
Many reasons, but for one thing, they are highly processed unstable oils that oxidize very quickly.

Hey, I'm 20 years old is it too early to start fasting?
@DrMichaelVan5 жыл бұрын
Intermittent fasting can be utilized for sure. If you are on the skinny side, I would not do extended fasting
