For a long time, I thought I must’ve been the only one who liked this movie as a kid, it never seemed to get any attention compared to Despicable Me. I liked both movies, but in retrospect, Megamind handled the concept of a villain who ends up being good much better. You’re right, this movie was made too early. Back then, the Superhero genre hadn’t been turned into a parody of itself yet. If this had been made in the late 2010s, I think more people would have understood what it was trying to do.

Megamind was, is and always will be one of my most beloved movies. the internet is blowing up with reviews of it now and I am ecstatic about that honestly. it truly is a great movie full of Gems. the crisis of Identity, the challenge of destiny vs. choice, the problem of power, the issue of the projected image vs. true self, the impact of early childhood, the importance of overcoming that "innocent" POV we are given from childhood (innocent in the sense of it's immaturity and us believing everything we are taught either good or bad) and growing into an Adult who can rationalize and must readjust his Worldview to match the Reality, hell it even point out that society often establishes Biases based on origin (Poverty, Race, Gender, etc.). I'm sure I'm missing some other beats but the complete uprooting of stereotypes is at the core of the movie and it truly rides it's story fantastically.

I remember when I watch it I thought that Metroman was kinda selfish for what he did BUT NOW so much years later I really resonate with him, I was the straight A+ Student in high school and my relatives always said that I would be the first Doctor of the family even when I always told them that I don’t like blood or gore in general and strait up told them that I didn’t wanted to be a doctor. In high school I found my passion in theater and art so now I’m in 3rd year studying Stage and Costume Design in college and my relatives casually drop a “WHAT A WASTE, YOU *WERE* SO SMART”, “YOU COULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST DOCTOR OF THE FAMILY BUT YOU DIDN'T WANTED TO” those just pisses me off but the worst one, the one that haunts me time to time is when my grandpa said to me ”YOU ARE SO SELFISH, YOU COULD HAVE USED THE INTELLIGENCE THAT YOU WERE GIFTED WITH TO SAVE LOTS OF LIFES BY BEING A DOCTOR” that was in the first year or college before the pandemic, so... now I kinda came to terms with that and I recognized that I am selfish in that regard, because I’ve chosen to prioritize my happiness for once instead of fulfilling family expectations, and I know myself and I know that I would suffer being a doctor since I have problems letting the other peoples problems affecting me too much, I know that life is like that but I’ll be devastated with every person that I couldn’t save, you could say that I’m not saving anyone now but my mental health is not strong enough to see those situations close, I just can’t. I’ve always thought that they just wanted me to be a doctor cuz of the money and the social recognition, to brag about it, but for my grandpa was like a responsibility that I had for being a gifted student. Like Metroman by being born with powers. Is so funny, my eldest cousin is a Dentist so my grandparents said that I would be able to achieve enter to study medicine but no thanks, and now my younger brother is on the nursing career, so yeah still not a doctor in the family. Also also when he talks about his grandchildren and what they are up to, he just doesn’t acknowledge me, I’m a shame, a waste of money an potencial so yeah. You will find your people and although life won't be perfect, know that your "selfish choice" will lead you to wonderful things. Like spiteful bitter crankypants mean. They tear people down and think it's normal and healthy because most of the people around them enable it. It's never going to be easy being yourself, especially when it comes to "family" but that's just blood, it means nothing to actual bonds made by choices. Life needs you to be selfish because as you grow older, you realize that the person who's responsible for you is going to be you at the end of the day. You will need to learn what it takes to take care of yourself, know when you need a support group and what an actual supportive kind of love looks like. Once you learn this you gain insight on how to help others in your own way. You bring something in this world no one else can but only you can figure it out. There are no right or wrong answers to living but know you only got one. Honestly with how important it is I think that it could use some selfishness actually.

This movie came out when I was pretty little. I'm pretty sure when I did watch it, my grandma had rented it when she was babysitting me. Years later, I was like "damn, remember that movie with the blue guy?" I couldn't remember much of it, but I did remember bits of the end. So, as any reasonable person would do, I began to search for it. I'll never forget finally finding it and rewatching it. It was amazing, and still I watch it monthly at least.

There is just one part I hardly disagree with. Hal was not harmless before he got his powers. He already had an very dangerous nice guy mentality: So Hal thinks he is entitled to sex as reward, because he thinks he's acting good or nice while completely disregarding everything about Roxanne, like her sexual self-determination, her wants etc. Hal gaslights Roxanne and acts as if she's insane (" She doesn't know what she's talking. You accidentally hugged him instead of me"). He doesn't care about Roxanne as a human being, he just views her as an object to posses and control. These Type of guys exist exactly the same way in real life and they can become stalkers, violent, aggressive or even murderers if they don't get want the believe they are entitled to. These type of guys take their guns to universities to shoot all the random women who he thinks he's entitled to, like an Incel. It's exactly what happens with Hal, in his interactions with Roxanne in the beginning, it's already foreshadowed how violent and obsessed he is: Like when he gaslights her, ignores everything she says and aggressively punches the car because Roxanne didn't wanna go on a date with him. As soon Hal finally finds a way to abuse his powers to get what believes he's entitled to, through his new super hero powers, he goes on full on violence: He takes her against her will and throws Roxanne through the air while flying, like a toy. And the moment Roxanne rejects him, he becomes even more violent: He yells at her, leaves Roxanne at the top of an tower to die and destroys the entire tower and attacks the town, just because she rejected him. It just proofs how selfish and ruthless Hal is as a person, he has no genuine affection for Roxanne he wants to control her. But the scariest part about him is that guys like this exist in real life, In real life he would stalk her, threaten her and even try to murder her.

Originally inspired to give the movie a chance because of the praise received by Schaffrillas, can't believe I never discovered it sooner. It contains a lot of elements that are hit or miss in other DreamWorks movies but blend well in this case. With such a high profile cast I quite never feel like I'm listening to Will Farrell, Brad Pitt or Jonah Hill. The jokes are incredibly timed and impeccably well pulled off. The popular music never feels forced and fits with the story. A shame it wasn't put in the same tier of Shrek, HTTYD or KFP (Before it's internet critical reassessment) cause this movie definitely deserved it.

OH my goodness, this essay on an expertly crafted, hilarious and smart satire on the prevalent genre of superhero movies in today’s film landscape. Is just spot on! Everything stated in this video is well researched and explained, I especially like how you went in depth on how the characters were written in a way that breaks free from the tropes and cliches of the superhero movies, while also being able to complement the story of the film. Metroman said something that completely went over all of our heads. During his speech he asks the crowd, “Do you wanna know what the greatest honor you’ve given me is? Do you really wanna know?” And then he says it’s “the honor to serve you, the helpless people of Metro City. And at the end of every day, I often ask myself… who would I be, without you?” This is honestly so blunt if you don’t read it with the voice and the same tone. The tone it was in sounded humble and serious yet emotional. But the look he makes after saying that just shows how he feels about all this, hinting towards what he was gonna eventually do.

You have indeed made some excellent points, but there is one thing that is missed. People are not watching Marvel superhero movies 100% because they love superheroes. That's not how they garnered popularity. Marvel has garnered popularity by creating an ongoing story that overlaps from one movie, to the next movie, to the next movie, to the next phase of movies. That means that when you see a movie coming out about a superhero that you really like and have a great desire to watch, you need to watch most if not all the other movies that came before it, just to be up to speed with what is going with your favourite superhero right now. People don't want to watch all the Marvel superhero movies, they NEED to watch all the movies so that when a superhero comes out that they care about and actually want to watch, they can enjoy it without missing out on any major plot points.

I was 8-9 years old when Megamind first came out. I remember seeing it and liking it, but the message was so far over my head that I never really remembered it. Then, I rewatched it when I was older, and now at 20 years old, I can honestly say that this movie only gets better with time. I adore it, and the themes and messages often help me when I feel I've hit a roadblock in my life, and question whether or not I'm on the path I'm meant to be on.

One of the funniest things about this movie that no one talks about is how easily Megamind is able to create a serum replicating Metroman’s powers. And then a way to take them away in response. He really is superhuman, but he’s just been a child playing a game the entire time.

Roxanne’s part in all this is also very interesting. She thinks she’s open minded and doesn’t judge, but she’s been reading those three by their covers the whole time until she’s faced with the truth. Hal was always just a weird, probably harmless idiot, then suddenly he got power and revealed how much of an a-hole he really is and how little he cares about the person he’s claimed to love this whole time. Metroman was the always the selfless hero, but it turned out he willingly left his role and let the bad guy take over just because he had a midlife crisis (which is irresponsible, but I’m also pretty sure he realized long ago that he was the only reason Megamind was forced to be a villain, so Metroman probably figured Megamind would chill out once the hero was gone.) And in the end, even though she was mad at Megamind for lying to her, she was faced with the fact that the only thing he lied about was being Bernard. He really did grow up lonely and outcast (she finds that out when they go to the old school house, she probably also connects the dots that Megamind and Metroman went to school together and it negatively impacted both of them) He really did love her (made obvious when you compare how he took being dumped to Hal, and by the fact that afterwards, Megamind runs to her for help “because she’s the smartest person he knows” without expecting her to suddenly accept him or change her mind) He was never truly evil (In 1 day Hal caused way more damage and actual threats to people’s lives than Megamind had in his whole career) and He never got the chance to do anything good, so he was bad by default, and he completely gave up ever trying to do something good (made clear when they find Metroman and Megamind just gives up, because 1. The one thing Megamind thought he accomplished was a lie, he never killed Metroman, so Megamind in his own mind is just a loser. 2. if the hero won’t save them, why should the loser villain even try) So, yeah, Roxy was forced to accept that she was judging books by their covers, and that there was a lot more to the people she was closest to, and that’s probably why she forgives Megamind and starts dating him at the end. She probably thinks it’s her job to show Megamind what the world is like when people accept you for who you really are by being the first person to actually look at him for who he is and not for what he appears to be. TL/DR: I don’t think it was sudden for Roxy to get with Megamind in the end, and in some way she probably represents the audience throughout the movie.

I am convinced that most modern movies start off with a great, central idea and a clear vision of achieving that purpose. Then they go through so many channels and filters that strip away almost everything until what is left is barely intelligible. The Doctor Strange "are you happy?" is a good example of this. The elements of a man with all the power in the world being unable to achieve what he most desires is supposed to be strongly contrasted with a person who decides that having power gives them the right to be happy. There's a great struggle and conflict between these two viewpoints which could have been beautifully expressed through Wanda and Doctor Strange. But hurr durr, me modern audience, me no like think. Me like bright light and loud noise.

Nope, Raimi just made a bad film. Even the most skilled make mistakes, especially when you haven’t done it for a while. Raimi said in a Rolling Stones interview that he had full creative control of that movie, the one caveat was that it needed to respect continuity with the previous films and set up the next, which wasn’t that big of a deal because although it established a few things the story was pretty self contained.

Instant sub. I discovered this gem of a movie later in life as an adult, take that Jasmine, and it quickly grew with each rewatch, into becoming one of my dearest favorites. Anyways, as a fan I am always praising it to others and love to see vids breaking down why it's amazing. Im now 20, but I saw this movie like a thousand times in the early 10s when nobody really cared about it. And I saw it with my sister, and it is still one of our favorite movies ever.
