This is by far the biggest construction project ever in Greenland and it’s going to revolutionize the way we travel in this country. Direct flights from Nuuk to other capital cities such as Copenhagen and Reykjavik.. A staggering 6 million square tons of rock are expected to have been blasted out of the way by the time the airport opens for business. We saw almost a doubling of the number of people in Nuuk, when we went from only having helicopter service to fixed wing aircraft in 1979. No doubt, the new runway and easier direct access to Nuuk will have a great influence on the number people arriving, leaving and staying here. It is also expected to have an influence on cargo and should make air cargo cheaper and easier to get to Nuuk in higher quantities than what the DASH 8s can carry. Another equally large airport is being built in Ilulissat. These airports are not cheap, and our kids, grandkids and maybe even great-grandkids will be paying for their construction.
