I'll throw my 2c into the conversation. When I heard about this entire controversy my immediate assumption was that Elon has a very "East Asian" mindset when it comes to gaming. The culture of games over there is very different than over in West, since most East Asian competitive games are whale games. Using RMT to pay someone else to grind to become stronger isn't really viewed as any different as just grinding it yourself. Both time and money are viewed as your assets. P2W is not only accepted, but largely encouraged by most of the players. It really isn't surprising that he said he didn't understand the controversy because in order to compete with East Asian gamers, he had to do it. Meaning he's pretty steeped in that side of the gaming culture. Really all he has to do is own the fact that he RMTs and most Western gamers wouldn't really care, they just wouldn't view him as a "god gamer". (Which they already don't at this point) Spending money to compensate for time in the West is viewed as being a bad gamer, and most P2W games aren't viewed as serious "hard-core" games. But it's the opposite in the East.

I would completely believe that Musk just did an awkward gesture because he's more comfortable in an office room than a political stage, if he'd only done it once. The fact that he did it twice goes from an awkward whoopsie to, "Oh, that might not have been an accident."
