I bought this laptop on sale at 1099 on November 2022 from 1699 of the original price for the QHD version. With the money I saved I upgraded the SSD with 2 fast 1TB Gen 3 from Sabrent that runs cool and is much faster for gaming (I have cloned the internal to the first Sabrent and then replace it with another Sabrent for a 2TB total SSD), I replaced the slow stock ram 1Rx16 CL22 with super-fast 2x16GB DDR4 1Rx8 CL20 Kingston FURY (total 32GB) & I also replaced the unreliable WI-FI/Bluetooth card with a fast and reliable INTEL AX210 NGW. All this costed about 320$ that can be 220$ if you go for the more than enough 16GB ram. All the components I have removed I sold them for used and I made some extra cash (about 100$) for the rest of the upgrades. All the above are super easy to do if you have basic computer skills, 15’ time and a screwdriver. With the remaining money bought also on sale: one ROG Falchion NX 65 keyboard, one mouse ROG Chakram, the AUKEY PC-LM1E 1080p camera and the Creative Pebble V3 Speakers (total cost another 200$). All the above upgrades and accessories costed less than the discount I got from best buy and I added a few more $ to the ones I made by selling the stock parts for one QHD LG Ultragear 27GP850-B monitor at 165Hz that is currently on sale at 300$ for a full gaming set up and for bypassing completely the integrated GPU since there is no MUX switch in this laptop. On benchmarks and on new AAA games this configuration is faster about 25%-30% of the original configuration and faster than a i7 11800H + RTX 3080M laptop that cost about double the original 1699 price of this laptop with smaller SSD and less RAM! All upgrades plus the laptop and peripherals cost me a total of 1820$. All this for a full gaming set up (external screen, keyboard, mouse, speakers and camera) plus 2TB SSD, 32GB ram and fast WIFi6. Every game run on ultra-settings smoothly as butter. I highly recommend it even on original price at best buy if you are considering buying the Nvidia variation and you will have the fastest laptop out there and a lot of hard earned $ saved.

It’s still very early for apples M series chips. I want to see apples discreet graphics hardware. Right now all the M series chips have integrated GPUs (far better than intels and even AMD integrated GPUs) If they can achieve the same efficiency gains on GPUs that they did for their own CPUs, we’re going to get some absolutely nuts performance with low power usage.

There was a time amd and radeon competed against intel and nvidia before amd and radeon combined. My amd 64 always seemed slower might not have been but seemed it. Radeon had some driver issues for me and most of my games seemed built around nvidia gpus. Not saying i couldn't try a amd setup again but my intel nvidia is still holding it down and i tend to go with what just works. Plus i like thunderbolt. Cool there will be cheaper options and options are always nice.

Yes, the price point information is something I felt was sorely missing from other coverage of this laptop (ehem, Linus). This can't be a huge surprise. Both AMD and Nvidia have reached the point where they are trading watts for FPS at roughly the same ratio. The Nvidia desktop GPUs take the crown because they require tremendous power, not because the silicon is fundamentally faster per watt. On the mobile platform, heat dissipation requirements basically put them on a level playing field, so they're just competing on price.

Ray Tracing in gaming is going to be the standard in future titles. So going with this laptop, seems like I'm "settling" for what's affordable. If I want to adapt my investment for what's fully possible in gaming, like higher fidelity games with full Ray Tracing support, then I'm going to go with Nvidia all the time. Last year, I "invested" in the MSI GE65 Raider 9sf, with a 240hz IPS panel, and full RTX 2070 GPU, and full size keyboard. Aside from being a bit noisy when games become graphically intensive, it's the best laptop, I've ever owned. Every game I've played that has Ray Tracing enabled, and DLSS, looks and plays phenominally. So going with a lesser performing laptop, just to save some money, doesn't make any sense. I'd rather wait, save a little more, and get the actual upgrade to my MSI with an RTX 3070 or better, running with 140w or higher.

and here we are 2 years later, where ray tracing is indeed more wide spread, but almost all nvidia cards have 8gb of vram, and that is a bigger bottleneck than slower ray tracing. (my 3070 just crashed in forza horizon 5 in 1080p due to vram...). AMD has vram, nvidia has dlss and better ray tracing. Both are flawed, and it's a shame

I ended up getting the MSI GE76 Raider last Feb of 2022. It has a 16GB RTX 3080 Ti at 175W. I decided to wait, as I stated in my original post, and it was well worth it. I did however experience a boot drive failure not too long ago, which caused me to buy a retail copy of Windows 11 and a 2TB NVME upgrade from my 512GB boot drive. So far, every game I've thrown at it, has been able to handle it at full ultra settings, with Ray Tracing. That includes games like Dinkum, Destiny 2, Monster Hunter World and Rise, Cyberpunk 2077, 7 Days to Die, and most reciently...Street Fighter 6 and Diablo 4, all...in 4K 144Hz. Next year, I'm thinking about another upgrade to a 40 series laptop, since Nvidia, in their infinite wisdom, thought it would be a good idea to develop a feature that their 30 Series of cards would not be able to do, due to an actual physical hardware limitation the series has, and exclusive to their 40 Series. Namely...DLSS 3 Frame Generation. But we'll see what MSI comes up with by the end of 2023.
