Anything from slower than a 3060 Ti to (a bit) faster than a 3070, the reality is that RTX 4060 Ti just doesn't do enough to justify its price-point - and if you want enough memory to fully futureproof your GPU for the triple-A games to come, you'll need to spend another $100... in two months time. Efficiency is a strong point, DLSS 3 has its uses in a mainstream build, but beyond that, this is a disappointment.

tbh unless you're a Nvidia fanboy the RX 6700 XT (76% better performance than 1070 + an extra 4GB of VRAM) for $320 or RX 6800 (126% better or more than DOUBLE the performance of the 1070 + DOUBLE the VRAM) for $480 would be fantastic upgrades for a GTX 1070 user.

Im using a 1070 and have been wanting to upgrade for awhile. 6700 xt looked like the best value, but I want a card that can do some ray tracing. I was hoping the 4070 might get discounted, but I don't think I can hold my breath on that. I might just have to hold my nose and get it because the 1070 is really showing its age with the newer titles and a 4070 will be a huge uplift and it is the card that I would feel the least ripped off. A 6950 uses too much power and no ray tracing. I wish AMD had a new gen card that can challenge the 4070 with reasonable power efficiency. The main reason I keep second guessing whether I should by a 4070 is the cut down memory bus and larger cache really keeps it at a 1440p level and I'd like to play at 4k even using dlss and frame gen. But what is disappointing is that with a proper memory bus the 4070 could easily do 4k gaming but Nvidia purposefully gimped it so that if you wanted to do proper 4k you'd have to pay double for a 4080. I disregard the 4070 ti because it has cut down memory bandwidth and 12 gb vram, which makes it a slightly more powerful 4070, but not enough of an uplift to matter in your gaming experience. Getting a 4070 now is admitting that you will need to upgrade in 2 years. But hey, id rather do that than spend twice as much for a 4080, pad the pockets of Nvidia and realize that in 2 years there would probably be a better card than the 4080 for $600. Every card in the 40 series below the 4090 feels like a product to upsell you to a 4090. They all are handicapped in such a way where the only reasonable 40 series GPU is the 4090 the card with the most unreasonable price. It feels all very deliberate and contrived and I don't want to reward Nvidia for this BS.

It gets better. 4060 Ti has an 8x PCIe 4.0 interface. The kind of computer that would be upgraded with such a GPU likely only has PCIe 3.0 (AM4 with 400 series chipset or earlier, Intel 10th gen or earlier). Benchmarks in those kinds of systems show a 4060 Ti loses about 10% performance. This card is a bad deal that keeps getting worse the longer you look.

At 1:36 please note that the 3060Ti die size is 392mm2 (GA104) and not 293mm2 (typo for sure). So in actual fact, 3060Ti had double the die size, double the bus size (256-bit) and double the PCIE Lane (x16) compared to 4060Ti (AD106 die, 190mm2). Put another way, 3060Ti was actually based on desktop grade performance silicon and 4060Ti is actually more like a mobile grade silicon with cut down memory bandwidth bus, PCIE lanes and a very small sub-200mm2 die.

Put more simply, Nvidia is selling what should have been a 4050 as a 4060Ti. Same goes for the rest of the lineup. 4070 is basically a 4050Ti. 4070Ti should have been 4060. 4080 should have been 4070. And 4090 should have been 4080Ti. This is all based off direct comparison with Ampere chip lineup.

@maynardburger
@maynardburger Жыл бұрын
That's not how it works at all. And also makes no sense whatsoever. If Nvidia made the 4080 a 4070Ti instead, as originally intended, this would mean this card would be a lower tier part. Either way, the problem isn't just Nvidia moving things up one tier, it's that they're moving parts up MULTIPLE tiers in actual reality, when you look at what the actual underlying chips are. The 12GB 4080 is basically exactly what the 3070 was in the Ampere lineup. That's more than a 100% increase in effective pricing. Now, I didn't expect them to sell it at $500, a price increase was expected, but the level of increase is insanity. The 4060Ti is basically a 3050-tier part, but pushed up several tiers so they can take what was a $250 part(which was actually overpriced at launch, taking advantage of cryptomining nonsense at the time) and selling it for $400 and soon $500. Nvidia have gone insane with greed. It's much worse than people seem to understand.

perhaps, but adding a 16gb version that is partner only is still warranted and there are come cases where a bit of extra ram can make the difference, even if we start to get edge case, but then, one bad port that you can run just fine is the sort of edge anyone can find themselves in. I don't think this is the first 128 bit memory interface card to be disadvantaged to the rest of the line-up. @xBINARYGODx
@xBINARYGODx Жыл бұрын
its actually, I feel, a good enough thing to look at in isolation. To add my own story to the data point - about ten years ago I bought the Titan original (700 series), and the thing that mattered most to that card last just over 6.5 years of all game intelligently maxed out was the 384 bit bus to 6gb of gddr5 vram. Yes the gpu bits were a nice enough upgrade over the 780 ti (not for the price increase, of course) - but the extra 6gig at the higher bandwidth really let that card go to places (and past a lot of bad optimization) that it otherwise would not have. I now look over these 8 gig cards out today and think of them like the 4g cards of ten years ago - sure the 780 ti was most of a titan in terms of the gpu, but the memory was a different story. A card today with a bump up 12 and at least 256 bit bus (but really, higher) can likely stand the test of time long enough at appropriate resolutions, somewhat similar to that Titan. But 192 to 8 gigs? lol wut

@@NatrajChaturvedi and yet it is getting comparable frame rates, despite all the cuts, possibly due to architectural changes. I don't know how valid is the "joules per frame" methodology is but at least someone is paying attention to this kind of metrics (LTT is the only other tech analyst that keeps tabs on it), meanwhile all the enthusiasts are just gushing or lamenting for uplifts in framerate and only complaining on power consumption because "OH NO I HAVE TO BUY A NEW MORE EXPENSIVE PSU!" Frankly, I'm more worried about power consumption, if not for environmental carbon footprint impact (which everyone should), for electricity costs. It might not be that much of a cost uplift to a single consumer, but communally the energy consumption is getting dangerously ridiculous, specially as workloads for AI become more and more common. Because of pricing, since it seems that graphic cards are seemingly going away from single desktops and toward computer farms of startups and cloud computing, then I'd rather have in the world more efficient hardware than traditional "bang for the buck" stuff for sustainability reasons. Besides, it seems like the non-enterprise consumer will increasingly have to make by with mobile-grade hardware, which is not a bad thing since all this bleeding edge tech will hopefully drip down in less than ten years to a very portable form factor, so really, what are we complaining in here again but for childish privilege entitlement.

But 4080 should have costed $600 4070 ti should have costed 400 4060 ti 16 should have costed 250 4060 ti 8 should have costed 200 and they can charge for a halo product 1 grand or $1200, or honestly whatever money they want, as it's not supposed to be for us normal mortals, we can get the next best thing for much cheaper.

@@korana6308 No, not really the 80 card used to be a full or close to 102/100 die (or whatever else it got called 10+ years ago). And no the first titan was 1k, as was the maxwell titan. Then they charged 1200 for the Xp which was just a 1080Ti, then replaced that with the XP (full die) for the same 1200. The 4090 is not a titan product at all. It's just what they used to call the "80ti", in fact it has more cores disabled than usual. Titans had special features back in the day, and twice the VRAM. This has the same 24GB you would expect for a high end GPU in 2023. And no special features. It's a rebranded 80/80Ti. That's basically a fact.

14:40 i really disagree with this point. a developer cant make full use of 12GB console buffers, and 24GB high end card buffers, and also optimise those same Ultra textures for 8gb because thats where the majority of the market is. if people are willing to pay for cards with higher VRAM i think its perfectly fine for those people to be able to take advantage of that. so long as 8GB gamers can take advantage of lower texture settings i dont see a problem. we shouldnt hold back complexity in models and textures in gaming purely for nvidia's benefit

This is also the Nvidia stance on this situation. The "There is alot of cards with 8GB ram and also the majority of gamers are on 1080p" kind of BS won't fly on a $400 GPU. I scrolled down to see if anyone else commented on that take because I was honestly surprised to see DF line-up with nvidia on this

I think if this were less than £300, maybe around £270, it would be more interesting. The performance is fine and would suit my older build.

Man, speaking of realistic configurations for this type of card - it'd be really amazing to see how it behaves with 3600 or 5600 because a lot of ppl are still on them and according to some videos I've seen just 8 PCI lanes means even worse performance for PCI 3.0 boards.

From a pure technical point of view with core number and die size, Ada architecture is just one of the best improvement Nvidia ever did. It's so good that Nvidia felt they could castrated all cards on memory bus and quantity and move all refs 2 slots down the stack to fuck their customers while also considerably raise the prices on 70 and 80 classes.. Shameful move from Nvidia. The 4090 is the only honnest GPU in the serie. True 4080 is missing, 4080 should be 4070, 4070ti should be 4060ti, 4070 should be 4060, and 4060ti should be 4050 at best. AMD really needs to rise the bar to match DLSS technologie to make their cards trully competitiv... not just raster. Because right now DLSS is so good that it locks by itself Nvidia monopoly.

Well the 4060 and 4070 were pretty underwhelming - more expensive than 3070 and 3070ti but similar performance and still 8gb. 4080 is the only laptop GPU I'd want but too expensive at the moment. The 6800m is also nice, but the Asus G15 Advantage Edition has issues and the 6850m in a Legion 7 is poor value. I bought a 3070 laptop on sale a while ago and have a Series X, which is usually marginally worse performance but way quieter and cheaper. Consoles are probably the way to go for now TBH. Hopefully next gen GPUs will be better value.

Hardly any reviewers are addressing the PCI 3.0 issue also - people buying these cheaper cards are likely to have an older system - where performance will tank and comparisons to a card like the 2060 super will be less favourable. Nvidia are such a holes - they make a fantastic architecture with 4000 series but hamper it with lower cut down vram to boost their profit margins and push people to buy the more expensive cards where they make a higher margin. The 3060ti had 256GB/s vram - whilst the 4060ti has lesser chips and barely outperforms it..I really hope no one buys these sham cards..and Nvidia learns the lesson

Usually the higher end is diminishing returns... not with the 4090 though. It's almost double the performance of 3090, and even more than double in 3D rendering. But the lower end cards barely has an uplift gen on gen comparison, or at least a MUCH lower upgrade. I'm happy with the 4090 but can totally see the frustration here, seems Nvidia is doing everything in their power to upsell you products by making the lower end worse.

They haven't even touched on the fact that the 4060 ti completely chokes in PCI 3.0. This means if you have a 10th gen (or lower) intel chip, or B450 AM4, it is better to just buy the 3060ti as the performance delta between the 2 is even smaller or closer to zero.

Would’ve been good to compare RT Overdrive performance against the 3070 and 3060ti alongside given that RT is the future. Could give a better idea of which 8gb GPU would be the better long-term buy.
