I've been looking at getting one of these. When I first heard how loud it was with the case open I started rethinking things. However once it throttled down with the case closed it became much more manageable to where I wouldn't hear it when it is in my basement with the rest of my network gear.

Yeah, that was also my reaction, I'm thinking of buying one to use as a desktop because it seems considerably cheaper than getting a gaming rig with the same specs, even tho the CPU has a somewhat lower frequency, but I doubt it would matter much. I'd also need to buy a rack, but a 10U open rack is more than enough.

I have an R720XD and I plan to do the same thing. I want to run the P4000 though because its a single slot card. Mine only has 32GB of ram at the moment. Right now its still on my workbench waiting for storage. Soon its in the rack and I get to start running cat6 all over my place for my cameras. That is the part I'm not looking forward to.

Blue iris runs picture perfect on my Dell R720XD. Right now I'm running windows server 2022 on bare metal and blue iris is the only service running on this box. I still haven't installed a graphics card so the dual 6 core CPU's are handling everything and its rock stable and no glitches. I upgraded the ram to 192 gigabytes. I'm not sure I needed that much ram but DDR3 is dirt cheap.

The biggest issue to watch out for is your GPU overheating. If you install a standard consumer card, it WILL work (if it's less than 2 slots wide) - but the cooling is marginal. Turn down your power limit to keep the card cool, and you probably will have to turn up the fan speeds some as well. Not an issue with server-specific cards as they're designed for this environment - and tend to be "passive cooled" cards using the case fans for airflow anyway. And for reference - I've used the 1070, 1070ti, and (with pl turned WAY down from stock) 1080 in a R720. The XD models should worth the same, as they are the same slots with the same cooling setup and most of the same slots.

Hi. Glad I have seen this video. I thought the Dell R730 where tied down to only specific GPUs like the Telsa etc....if that's not the case and with du 10-14 core CPU at Say 2-2.4 GHz would be ideal with a 1070 GPU for one VM game server. Would this be correct

Nvidia does not make drivers for these cards for Windows Server. Which driver exactly did you install? If you used the Windows 10 driver, please let me know how to install it. At one time, I was unable to get it to work on Windows Server 2016.

Gen8 / HP in general have a tone of driver issues. In the g8 you can only install in specific PCI slots for it to be detected.

I saw another video from your channel where you did the XD model of the R730... Do you have to have the Dell GPU kit to install a GPU in the R730XD? I'm seeing all kinds of conflicting info about a GPU in the XD model. Specifically, it appears that I would need the 1100W PSUs, and power cables (0J30DG). Would I also need a GPU riser (800JH)?

Hi , the risers included usually are GPU capable if they have the Auxiliary power outputs. You would need the GPU cable and 1100w PSU's

Your power supply may be 750w , you need 1100w otherwise the fans ramp up to tell you there is a issue.

Hi , if you type in R720 GPU cable you will get the cable you need , these R720s have built in aux power outlets for GPU power.

When i add 3070ti (inno3d for 2 slots, but in R7910 what is very simmilar) the GPU reached 90C at load. Speeds of fan was on AUTO mode. 3080ti has a much higher TDP so that be difficult to cool down

As this is a dual socket system, it would not be great for gaming. This is because of most game has ever been developed and designed to make use of two CPUs at the same time. NUMA would also be an issue aswell(you could turn it of, and cut your preformance on some applications).

@@calibruno so I think my issue that I had was that I wasn't connected to internet. I had the server staged in an area I couldn't connect ethernet easily. Once I hooked up ethernet things were working as they should. Id start with that, I have my card in the center riser working right now.

Hi , Okay , the way we did this is you have to use the server onboard VGA Port with 1 screen and use 1 port from the GPU. We used the DVI Port on the GPU. When you boot the server all POST will display on the Onboard VGA adapter. Once into windows both screens will turn on. Then you can install drivers ... you will be then able to setup your screens using the screen setup utility !
