Secure boot has enough flaws and vulnerabilities to make it basically useless as a form of protection, but very inconvenient for normal users when a windows update inevitably breaks compatibility and forces you to disable it anyways (as has happened to me multiple times already) Sticking to signed drivers doesn't mean that they're safe, it just means that the company that pushed out the drivers you're able to install just paid some cash to Microsoft. There has been malware in signed drivers before, and it'll happen again. Windows update is just a huge annoyance, it's perfectly fine to disable it and install updates on your own schedule instead of having windows interrupt you while you're trying to use your computer. If you want to keep your computer safe, just make sure you have a good antivirus software installed and running. Secure boot, signed drivers, and windows update aren't nearly enough to keep your computer safe from actual malware

They were used in schools and hospitals for a few years after which they were recycled and sent to us for free. In our warehouse, we had so many keyboards and mice (most still working) that we could sell them for 2 euros, yet still we were drowning in them. Surely, we didn't have a shortage of HP SFF PC:s with core2 duos and earlier-gen i3:s either. In the middle of all that, I once thought: If a thrift store/recycling centre in some small city in Northern Europe has so many functional keyboards just lying around, how many are there in some warehouse in China?

There was a postal strike a few months ago in Canada, so a lot of Chinese sellers stopped shipping things to Canada because it would add to the already absurd shipping times (plus they assumed people would start requesting refunds and then the item would arrive later). Too bad they didn't bother to check up on the news to see the strike has been over for a while and things have been arriving for weeks.

NOPE! Just buy the AMD equivalent of the buy-used AMD FirePro S9150 from eBay Canada which has ENORMOUS GPU horsepower (64-bit floating point too!) for less than $1000 each CANADIAN! In one of the parent company warehouses, we have like over a 1000 of them now running their 2.5 TeraFLOPS each of 64-bit floating point processing! That's 2.5 PetaFLOPS (or 2.5 QUADRILLION 64-bit floating point operations per second) of GPU horsepower in a square area barely the size of a small warehouse! And with the Natural GAS-fueled GENERAC-brand generators, our power consumption costs are now at less than 5-cents a killowatt/hour! That's because of CHEAP pre-bought on contract in bulk at summer natural gas prices way over a year ago on contract! That is a LOT of aerospace and computational fluid and plasma dynamics simulation AND Crysis-playing horsepower in a reasonably cheap supercomputing package! .
@StarGateSG76 жыл бұрын
Well...they WERE less than a $1000 CAN last year on eBay! Looks like the used prices have risen quite a bit! As of Jan 2019 you can buy 49 of them in a bulk sale on eBay for less than $1000 CAN per card!

The parent company kept buying the AMD FirePro S9150's used in bulk because multiple data centres in Canada, Europe and Asia were getting rid of them because they were/are considered "Obsolete"! So for less than $1.5 million CAN they have a 2.5 PetaFLOP supercomputer that is I think is around 4th in the list of fastest Canadian supercomputers AND it is definitely the FASTEST publicly-disclosed privately owned supercomputer in Canada! YA can't beat the price! I think SOME of the used S9150 cards were even bought for $500 PER card at bulk-lot auction! AND if ANY of you want your OWN personal supercomputer, AMD RX-480's with 8-gigs of RAM can be had as cheap as $80 CAN on eBay and if you put FOUR of them in each of four stacked motherboards ($4800 for 16 RX-480's plus $200 per used gamer motherboard), for less than $5500 CAN, you can have 83 TeraFLOPS of GPU horsepower in a small rack which means you PERSONALLY and AT HOME can do even the highest-level of hard-core computational fluid dynamics simulations, high-end 4K 3D-animation rendering, advanced gene sequencing, molecular simulations, high-speed day-trading and stock market forecasting, weather forecasting and GIS and 3D Mapping, etc. which CAN make you SERIOUS MONEY AND PROFITS if you know what you're doing !!! . 83 TeraFLOPS is an ENORMOUS amount of supercomputing horsepower to have at home! and all it takes, is some used AMD RX-480's or GTX-1060's bought off ebay!

15:00-15:18 Yeah, that's not gonna happen. Those "tens of thousands of cards" would result in lower sales from Nvidia. There's no way Nvidia would go out of their way to lose potential sales. Had it been AMD, then maybe since they could use the increased market share and those potential customers would most likely buy Nvidia GPUs anyway.
@paulie-g6 жыл бұрын
More importantly, you can run amd cards with a fully open source driver (no blobs) on Linux very well and there wouldn't be any lockout in them.

I would like to see them (or anyone really) at least recycling boards instead of tossing them in a landfill. Even $10 off your next GPU for turning in an old one would be nice and they could easily cannibalize $10 of parts off the board with just a hot air solder station and a few minutes
