Thanks for the video. My 2017 Pro has been laggy and twitchy for a while, especially right after a restart. I suspect it's because of the large database for my media collection combined with using the Shield as a DVR for my OTA tuners. Too much thrashing. I finally decided to do something about it. Popped the drive out, started the cloning, then cleaned the fan/cooler and regooped it. 3 hours later, popped the SSD in, closed it up, and plugged it in. Started like a stabbed rat with no lag at all. Been an hour without a single blip in video playback. Great success!

@JTown-cg4ry
@JTown-cg4ry 3 жыл бұрын
@@rynwolf286 Yep. Not a blip since the switch. I used to dread having to restart because I'd just have to let it sit and churn for half an hour or even basic video playback would randomly stop for 10+ seconds at a time. Now it boots in seconds and it's ready to go as soon as the home screen finishes populating. I should have done this years ago. I think I even fixed the remote/controller dropouts. I bought 3rd party controllers because it was annoying. While it was open, I noticed the shield on the black antenna wire was touching that metal plate right next to it and the white wire was touching the black wire. Insulated the black wire where it was touching the metal plate and the white wire. Haven't had a controller dropout since. But it's only been a day. (I'm assuming one of those is the antenna for the RF controllers.) I should mention that I ran Seagate's long diagnostic test on the original SSHD and it passed.

@J.Town yeah man. I am hoping I can clone it though disk utility on my MacBook. But I will have to look inside for controller dropout too. But man I was ready to throw the dam thing out the window 😂. However, I knew a long time ago someone swapped there hdd out but it was a pain and I didnt want to go through the hassle. I got my 15 pro for $60 ebay back in late 15 or 16 because someone softbricked it and couldn't get into fastboot. Took me awhile myself but I got it working.

Hello, thank you for your informative video. I have 2 questions: How big is the heat sink? do you have a reference to give me? 2nd question: what kind of product do you use to remove the thermal paste on the processor? Isopropyl alcohol good for you? To read to you.
@GGMentor
@GGMentor 3 жыл бұрын
Yes Isopropyl Alcohol is what you use to remove the old thermal paste. You want a high Percentage like 90% or higher. As to how big is the heatsink, umm Do you mean the copper die that sits on top of the CPU/GPU? It is quite small about the size of a Penny. As you can see at time stamp 6:08 kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIDHp5VpmKiNibs It's hardly bigger then the head of a Q-tip. The Die Plate has a heat pipe attached to it which has aluminum fins on it, the part with the Fins is probably about 2 inches long and a half inch thick.

Great stuff....but how hard is it to insert a 500Gb SSD if you have the smaler 16 Gb version of the 2019? Or can you got 2tb even (break the USB3 case that is connected to it now and use that drive inside it instead)
@GGMentor
@GGMentor 4 жыл бұрын
So I think I actually did research on this when the 2015 model came out and what I found was that the 16GB non pro model did not have the SATA Connector at all. Someone said that the pads were there as in if someone had soldering expertise that they might be able to add a connector by Soldering but other then that adding a HDD to a 16gb model was not an option. I don't know if that has changed with the 2019 version but I doubt it. Chances are you are probably gonna have to go with an Extremely fast Micro SD card. www.apotelyt.com/abc-i1/memory-card-speed-classes-960x640.jpg Above is a Link to a picture showing all the speed classifications. If you notice the one that has a U with a 3 inside of it is the fastest at 30 MB/S you want to make sure the card you get is a name brand and a U-3 Class rating. At the very least don't go below Class 10 which is 10 MB/S

When you replaced the thermal paste, could you tell if the APU ran cooler?
@GGMentor
@GGMentor 3 жыл бұрын
If your asking if I did a heat probe test the answer is no. However I used a very high quality paste a d they tend to go very low quality at the factory. So right off I can assume a small decrease in temperature for two reasons. #1 the thermal paste was old #2 the quality of my thermal paste was undoubtedly better. I have noticed since doing the maintenance and swapoit my system runs much quieter. So the fan isn't kicking up to full power as much which is a good sign the thermal temps are low.

I tried installing the SSD but it doesnt seem to want to boot up. I tried cloning twice and there was no change. Booting from the original HDD is fine though. The SSD im using is the Silicon Power Ace 55 512GB SSD,, could the cloning software be the issue?

The 2015 pro and the 2017 pro have 500GB HDDs. The 2019 Pro doesn't. So if it is a 2015 or 2017 pro you can. If it is not a Pro Edition I would recommend setting up the network transfer so you can stream files from your computer instead. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioracp1md613os0

How do I re write the recovery image to my new hhd my original has died and can't access it
@GGMentor
@GGMentor Жыл бұрын
The Process of writing anything to the drive generally requires you to be able to access to recovery menu. Which is something you can't do if the hdd is blank. In the past I have tried writing a Clone of one of my drives to a blank drive and putting it into a unit with a dead hdd and I have no been successful. Unfortunately there seems to be too much going on internally with different versions which somehow irreparably change the Recovery software. Unless the HDD Version matches that internals it won't even boot. I wish to just save you a lot of heart ache, don't bother. I have spent literal weeks trying to revive a unit like yours that just simply had the hdd die. Multiple units in fact, once that hdd dies so to does just about any hope of getting the system working again. which is why I recommend everyone to make a Raw HDD Copy of the drive before it dies.

You can do a smaller hdd but it requires you to edit the android image. There is a guide on how to do it but it's a bit complicated.
