NVIDIA Shield TV - Take Control With HDMI-CEC

Using HDMI-CEC with the NVIDIA Shield TV makes it really easy to control the Shield with your TV's remote control. When paired with the Refresh Rate app shown in a previous video, we can take it a step further to manage display settings and add a "Home" button.

Thanks for the video. I currently have my cable box as my hdmi source 1 and nvidia shield as hdmi source 2. When I try to go to the hdmi source 2 to play the Nadia shield box it will go on for 15 seconds and then automatically switch back to source 1. I have to go back with my Logitech remote and have it correct the source 2 input. How do I make it so when I first go to source 2 the shield it will stay on that source and not switch out back to my source one cable?

Hey on your magic remote if you look at the number pads on top next to the 0 there is a button that has a icon of a remote click that and it will give you the option to go home without using that refresh app.

Didn't work on my 2015 Nvidia. Automated refresh appears on the screen(23.976) but when I look at the output info via my Denon amp, The refreashrate still says 59.940Hz(default)

Great video! My oled E9 is already connected where I can control the Nvidia shield pro, I just can't turn the shield on and off. Under power control in the Nvidia shield pro setting which ones do I need to turn on in order to turn it off and on. Please respond Thanks Trent

Hey all, so one of the things that you must do to connect your LG tv and your nvidia shield is go into your device connector and set your shield as device type other. This was painful for me to figure out. I couldn't find the device connector option in my app list however by clicking the 3 dots on my magic remote when I was in the shield and going to the magic remote setting (I think it was called) it would shortcut me over to device connector. It also auto set it as a ott box so I had to clear the settings and go back to home (I didn't enter from the home) and then boom I could do it. After that you can do these great hotkeys mentioned in this tutorial. Good luck guys.

man LG sucks when it comes to using hdmi ports iv got a pi 3b+ a gt king pro and a shield pro hooked in to lg samsung is a breeez to do this

Cannot bind LG remote keys. Selected Shield TV and ‘other’ in TV’s Universal Control Setup and neither enabled keys to bind. Shield remote keys bind but every key is used for normal functions so collide with app’s binding.

Can you tell me if the quality of a 4k HDR remux movie is the same using the native LG TV player and using KODI on the shield?

In theory, the video PQ should be the same assuming that the LG TV isn't messing with the bits. Kodi can do refresh rate changing, so it will be a judder free experience. On the audio side, the Kodi experience will be better if you have an AVR in the mix. ARC is a poor substitute for HBR multi-channel audio.

So if I have a harmony 700 remote (IR) with a Yamaha receiver I can get full control functions for the Shield using CEC? Does the Yamaha have the option to set that up properly?

You should be able to. You should just need to enable CEC (all the way if there's an option to only do ARC), and maybe power down the equipment, for it to work.

Hi I was wondering if you can help. I have a 6 year old Sony tv and I have recently bought the Pro Shield. The problem is that while I was setting it up both my tv and my shield remote work as one. That’s all good but I need to change the aspect ratio on some of my videos. But I can’t as that option doesn’t work on my remote anymore. So is there a way I can stop my TV remote from working on the shield without having to reboot it. Thanks

If you turn off CEC on either device it will break the link. Usually, cycling CEC will sort out connection/control issues, but it doesn't always and a reboot is required.

Hi there, so in this video do you have your Shield connected to your Denon AVR first and then your AVR connected to your TV? I've got a LG B8 tv & Denon 3600H and I'm thinking about getting a Shield if I'm able to control it with my LG Magic remote while it's connected to the AVR! Thanks!

Yes. That's exactly how I have it setup. Connecting the Shield to the TV would reduce audio quality (i.e. HBR audio formats can't ARC).

Did you get the network debug authorization dialog? That's usually the problem when it doesn't work.

I have the LG CX and the remote works great, the only thing that I can't get working is to turn it on, or wake as it tends to say no input found. So, I end up using my shield remote to wake it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

It should wake the Shield when the input is selected on the TV if you configure it to do that. IIRC, there's a setting for that in my TV's CEC settings.

@@MissingRemote I have since got a denon 2700h and been having issues with it. I changed the avr settings and i think doing so fixed it for me, however, I now have 2 hdmi options. Both are the shield, but one seems to be for the receiver, which is correct. @@wanderdutts4584 Unfortunately the device list is dynamic based on the meta data from devices on the CEC bus. The only thing I can think of is that it might fix it if you power everything down, and remove power (unplug from the wall) for everything and then power it back up. Sometimes that fixes weird CEC issues.

Problem I am having is that I like to be able to control the volume of Spotify through my mobile phone. When I am casting to a Chromecast device, I can do this. However, when I am controlling Spotify playing on the shield, the volume buttons on my phone have no effect. A message comes on the screen telling me to set up IR. Not helpful. Thinking turning on CEC might help, but it didn't. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! I can't figure this out the shield is going back and I will buy the new Google TV.

As long as the Shield is configured to wake using CEC, it can all be done using the TV's remote.

@@MissingRemote Thanks for the response. The shield is connected directly to the tv. I turned on all ir settings and turned off the ir settings that you had off. The shield remote works great, but the magic remote does not work at all to control the shield.

The behavior there is configurable from the Shield's setting. No need for an add-in.

@@JerusalemMrBig it's not unusual to take 2&3 seconds to negotiate the signal. If it's taking longer than that, it could be the cable. Also worth checking if deep color is enabled.

The 2019 Shield doesn't have IR, so you can't control it directly with a Harmony One (smart hub based Harmonys can control via BT), but you can configure the One to control the TV (as long as it supports IR) and use CEC to control the Shield.

@@MissingRemote That's exactly what I have been doing because everything is tied in with CEC support the harmony does control everything except that stop button that exits out of Netflix so what would be an alternative for that 1 command? And I noticed with the back button on the harmony one you had the whole down on it until it vibrates and it does used it back function inside shield so everything is working OK with CEC

Do you mean the TV's remote? If HDMI CEC is enabled on the TV and AVR (if you have one), it should just work. You may need to power cycled everything after enabling for it to sync up though.

@@michaelgonzalez3159 What model TV is it? Is the Shield connected directly to the TV (if it's not, try that before giving up). Also worth trying a different HDMI cable (make sure it's spec'd for 4K). This should work with any TV/AVR that supports HDMI CEC.

Folks, don't bother. Lower your expectations very low. Now lower, it is not your remote that is not working properly. Firstly, you are not going to get the Air Mouse functionality with your Nvidia Shield, nor with any other device. You will still need the Nvidia remote for the voice commands and except for the very basic left-right, up-down functions, without the scroll-wheel by the way, you are not getting any of the functions from the LG remote such as the NetFlix, Prime Video and content buttons. No back or cancel button. No turn on/off. No contextual menus. Absolutely nothing else but top-down, left-right and click without the scrolling wheel. That's it. With any device. No way I am using Refresh Rate, nor should you. The app requests accessibility permissions that give itself access to everything you type, including credit card numbers.

Facts. But you can use the back button. It's still quite viable alternative to Shield controller, as you can navigate at least.
