There is no greater love than the love of Hashem for the Jewish people. That relationship is described by Shlomo HaMelech in Shir HaShirim (6:3-4) with the words: “Ani le'Dodi ve'Dodi li ha'ro'eh ba'shoshanim. Yafah at rayasi ke'sirtzah navah ki'Yerushalayim - I alone am my Beloved’s as my Beloved is mine, He Who grazes His sheep in rose-like pastures. You are beautiful, My love, when your deeds are pleasing, as comely now as you once were in Yerushalayim of old…” It is an unbreakable bond, an eternal marriage.
The kesubah for that marriage is the Torah. And the gifts given from the chassan to the kallah are the sweets of the Torah. In this song, we sing the words of Shlomo HaMelech, who speaks of the mamsakim, the “candies,” which fill the Al-mighty’s palate (ibid. 5:16): "Chiko mamsakim ve'chulo machmadim zeh Dodi ve'zeh Rei'i bnos Yerushalayim -The words of His palate are sweet and He is all delight. This is my Beloved and this is my Friend, O nations destined to ascend to Yerushalayim."
A young man approached Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman and complained that he didn't find Torah sweet. Rav Aharon Leib smiled and asked the young man what the sweetest tasting food is. The bachur suggested honey. Rav Aharon Leib pointed out that if one has a toothache, or sores in his mouth, he doesn't find the honey sweet. The same is true with our Torah study, said Rav Aharon Leib. There is nothing sweeter in the world. Sometimes, though, we infect our mouths with spiritual sores, and that causes even the sweetest treats to lose their palpability.
It is up to us to make ourselves worthy of savoring Torah’s sweetness. Our Beloved is giving us His most treasured gift. How can we not accept?
