According Mbe Tazi, a keen observer, custodian, and practitioner of the Lebang and Nweh culture, "nyampke" or "nyampkwee", dance stems from the society called Ngbe. He opines that Ngbe is " a society that originated in the Cross River area of Cameroon among the Balondo people of Ndian Division and spread to Manyu and down river to Calabar and from there to Cuba, Brazil, and other places in the African Diaspora. It is an ancient society that is made up of at least 10 sub societies. In Lebialem, Ngbe typically shows up during cry-dies, which happen to count among the biggest social events that bring people together. The distinguishing element of the Ngbe society is the masquerade, called Emanyangkpe in Manyu. The mask is a tightly knit body suit made of fiber and displays a thick mane-like fiber structure that give the masker a lion-look. The dancer is young and quick on the feet and is able to imitate the movements of the leopard, the animal that gives ngbe its name. Membership in Ngbe is restricted to men, though a ngbe lodge typically has a woman titled holder called Manyangarong who dances next to the Fua Ngbe (Nfo Ngbe in Kenyang, or the Sessekou) during public ceremonies. The core of Ekpe remains the "Voice," referred to as Mutama, which is believed to be the voice of the mythical leopard that was captured from the river by Balondo women during a fishing trip before men "seized" the society from them. During an event, the voice can be heard blaring from out of nowhere. It is the most guarded secret in Ngbe, and people spend decades in Ngbe and die without ever being exposed to the secret behind the sound.
A distinguishing feature of Ngbe is the large loin cloth and a loose top (shirt or jumper) worn by the dancers, as well as a woven yarn hat or one, referred to as krunta, made of hard synthetic fiber. Ekpe drumming and singing, in good hands, produce music that soothes the soul and makes even non affiliates willing to get up and dance".
Nyampkwee dancers during the December 2011 edition of Lebang Cultural festival, dubbed Laegeh alleh Lebang. Lebang is found in Fontem-Lebialem, Southwest Region of Cameroon Africa.
