I've been a Megami Tensei fan for a long time, and while my first game was Persona 3, the game that truly got me into the franchise was Devil Survivor.
Devil Survivor is not only my favorite game in the entire MegaTen franchise, but my all-time favorite game! In this video, I go over every aspect of Devil Survivor and why it is, in my opinion, the best Megami Tensei game!

@Djokover215 In fact, this game is one of the hardest to get on 3DS (in EU region). I was very lucky to buy one two years ago for about 80EU - french distribution though. Nowadays, it easily goes above 100EU price-tag. Same for its sequel which I still don't have :-(

Honestly, the game is pretty great going through blind imo. But it is really fun at the end of the game to look at the builds other people are good. Once you do that though you can break them game (confirm 1 shots or stones on all enemies at once. Halve the final bosses health in a single encounter in Overclocked, etc.) And it just makes you want to go back and play it all again with your new deeper understanding of the mechanics. Also walkthroughs for later playthroughs. I am actually amazed at how many different characters you can unlock to fight with you or save that I missed.

Try Growlanser games and Der Langrisser, they are really good games that never went mainstream. If you haven't, try the original 3 persona games.

@@YourBudTevin The best way I can describe P4 Golden which I have been playing through is "A very fun and engaging Life Sim with an SMT spinoff tacked on." If you love Rune Factory/Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, any anime that isn't Naruto and DBZ, etc then you will definitely love this game. And since you like SMT the combat and demon fusion is like a big cherry on top. But the game does feel very split. At least this has been my experience in playtime. You get acquainted with the game for 15-20 hours. Then you grind against demons for 5-7 hours straight. Then you fuse for an hour. Then you play a life-sim for 15 hours. Then you have to go back into a dungeon for 7 hours, before fusing around for maybe an hour if you are bored, then you go back to a really good Life-sim for over 15 hours straight. I am playing a good Life-sim, and then have to play a mediocre SMT game for however many hours before I can go back to fusing and playing the honestly fantastic Life-sim.

@@YourBudTevin The best way you can play Shin Megami Tensei: Persona is on psp. You can play by emulator too if you have to if you didn't know, my best advice is you need to forget all about the fusion style of persona 3, 4, 5. In SMT: Persona you have to collect skill cards from demons and fuse them, this is the only way how to obtain a persona, there is no compendium only in total of 25 personae you can store. The first persona game is a first persona dungeon crawler, you must get use to something as old as that, but it won't take long. Each persona has a chance to rank up each time you use your personae in battle, the max rank a persona can have is 8, you learn skills, but (VERY IMPORTANT) if you want to rank up a persona, you must use the persona's skills. The way how experience is distributed is by who does most of the battle work, it is visually annoying, but you can survive. If you have a rank 8 persona you no longer want you can give it to Igor to transform into an item which can be useful.

I just started Devil Survivor (original) recently, and, yeah. It's all that and a bag of chips. What I'm really digging about it, besides the story and all that, is how it makes you work for your power and customization. In certain modern strategy games, it feels like you're being fed options on a conveyor belt unless you crank up the difficulty settings. Getting to wild extremes is an inevitability in, say, Fire Emblem Awakening, where things like Galeforce are just waiting on the horizon to help you split the game in half. Devil Survivor, though? You've got some great, game breaking options available, but you have to get your butt up to go grab them. Cracking skills is such a great mechanic. I played a lot of normal mode Fire Emblem before DS, so when I saw that I could grab skills off enemies, I played like those enemies were just treasure chests waiting to be opened. Especially on maps where valuable skills were stuck on demons close to another unit that would kill them before me if I didn't drop everything and target that one first. Then I realized that scattering my units to chase them like I routinely got away with in FE was a surefire way to feed the wild Wendigos. The game made me, *gasp*, think about how to coordinate multiple units to ensure that the one doing the cracking would reach the target alive and be in line to get the final shot, especially on some of the tanky bands of demons. Even the elemental Dance skills, which everyone calls overpowered, can quickly become detrimental if the random spread of the dance keeps killing demons out of your planned order, hampering your growth for treating them like "Instant Win" buttons. Also you murder a demon lord with a fake mistletoe. I love games where context matters this much.

@@jojijoestar7233 There's a manga adaptation and the protagonist DOES punch the shit out of Beldr while keeping the mistletoe cellphone charm in his fist lmao For the finishing move though the mistletoe gets frozen inside an icicle and he runs Beldr through with it, which is considerably more intuitive

My first MegaTen, still my favorite. Has a great story, and I prefer the strategic battles over dungeon crawling. Picked it up on a whim from Gamestop shortly after release. Got home and had the worst panic attack I have ever had. Thought I was having a heart attack. Thought "Well, if I'm going to die, I'm at least going to play the game I just bought". The game tells me: +++Peaceful days are over.+++ +++ Let's survive.+++ Suddenly it was several hours later and I had completely forgotten about whatever I was worrying about. I was hooked. Recently started a replay to get the Chaos ending, which I haven't done before. It is reeeal weird playing during a quarantine and lockdown.

Devil Survivor (Overclocked) is literally the only SMT related game I loved from head to toe. It is such an amazing gem of a game. Amazing music combined with the most narratively easy to digest story in the SMT saga is a must-play for anyone interested in SMT or any RPG!

I dunno why people think giving Mari's bag to Kaido instead of her is so counterintuitive. I start Day 5, I learn that Kaido's gonna kill Keisuke at 13:00 but also that his crush is gonna die at 12:00, and then I see Kaido's icon on the top screen indicating I can talk to him somewhere. Of course my first instinct is to beeline for him and see if I can find some way to stall for time, like Atsuro Yuzu and Midori have been screaming at me to do lol. And then the game gives me the option to tell Kaido that Mari's in danger and I give him the bag I already have (because finding it isn't hard) Did you guys happen to give Mari's bag back on Day 4 or something? That would make a lot more sense, but I'm also surprised you had the time to give it back to her so quickly. Between having to talk to Shoji, Kaido and Haru around the time you rescue Mari at 17:00-18:00, plus the last mandatory fight of the day, it took me forever to even know I had the chance to give Kaido/Mari the bag on Day 4

I picked up Overclocked after playing Nocturne back in 2019 and never in my life have I loved a video game more. The battles are fun, challenging, and the characters feel like real people who go through the struggle of a lock down. Nothing will top Devil Survivor for me.

Thing is I remember how playing Devil Survivor gave me that sense of dread of surviving through the apocalypse that few games really conveyed after playing Nocturne. Even though there was limited interactions, the characters did feel pretty fleshed out, and the Day 8 scenarios were what really clinched it for me as they allowed nuance within a path which previous entries never implemented and attempts like Deep Strange Journey kinda botched.

I still remember the fight to save Midori and right when you think it is over (and your party is probably out of position and right up near the top of the screen) Beldr shows up says some badass lines and then Deep Night starts playing...you then start to move towards him to attack only to find out you can't hurt him and need to run away. It was the absolute perfect oh shit moment with the most amazing music.

The only two things I dislike about devilsurvivor is how much macca grinding you need to do and well just grinding in general, and how you dont get the compendium for a while which makes replaying it a little tiring in the first days.

I honestly believe I would enjoy most SMT games more if I just hacked in infinite Macca. I love the series to death, but I definitely spend more time grinding Macca than the average player which screws with the intended level curve.

great video!! devil survivor 1 is easily my favorite game of all time. i've got hundreds of hours in it, imported practically every official desu merch i could find, and honestly i don't think i can ever get over what a fantastic game it is. the music, story, characters, atmosphere... all 10/10 to me. so happy to see someone else appreciate it as well!

This was my first SMT game and I easily put over 200 hours in this game alone, because when your a kid and don’t have very much money you get a game once or twice a year, this game change my views on video games as a whole, the story was so good and intriguing that it changed my genre in video games, I used to play FPS games like halo and call of duty but thanks to this games I found the SMT series and I fell in love with it.

Glad to see some love for my entry point in this saga ^^ Glad to see it being praised, I think I struck gold when I first saw it, since I indeed like demon based around mythology, abilities being actually a meta and delving into each boss it can be either the thing that save you or dooms you. You don't mention skill cracking though, that was a nice part that varies the gameplay as well since it forces you to get an objective throughout the battles on which skill to pick to crack and with whom (you'll have to outfit your team differently and position them strategically if you want to get that particular skill with that character) and actually makes the game even more difficult on your side, but the rewards are the things that save you throughout the game. Go fight the demon of fire without fire protection passives, and you'll be in for an hard time (I know I had)

i could listen to the overworld song on repeat for days, its so catchy and you hear it for such a long amount of time in this game and yet it never gets boring. definitely one of my favorites when it comes to menu music

Great video!!! When I randomly bought this game on the eshop; I was amazed by how the plot became so dangerous so quickly. The corruption of the government-brushing over and hiding issues like its nothing; the ensuing hoards of demons who were dangerous yet also controllable, SHOMANKAI CULTISTS, the hidden threat from the heavens; and the people who wavered between keeping to their morality or breaking it in such chaotic times... Devil Survivor is so damn good!!

Thanks to both this game and Durarara!!, Suzuhito Yasuda has become a household name for me. I associate him with quality work, not just because his character designs are great, but also because he's lent his talent to two works I really love (three if we count DS2). I'm not even a Digimon fan, yet I made an exception and bought Cyber Sleuth Complete recently, both because it looks like a more substantial RPG than I've come to expect from other monster-collection series like Pokemon (and seems to have grown up with its audience unlike Pokemon), but because I instantly recognised Yasuda's artstyle.

Thank you for posting this. This has served as a reminder as to why I enjoy this game so much. I have yet to beat it because I just don't play my 3DS much anymore, but this game really is incredible and I have enjoyed every second of it so far from what I've played. Watching this already has me looking forward to playing more. And yes, the soundtrack kicks ass. The battle theme immediately popped out to me when I first played and I immediately fell in love with its hard rock style.

Finished Devil Survivor OC a few months before the current global predicament, totally agree with the "lockdown despair" atmosphere the game presents, surprisingly since its on a tiny device like the 3ds! Also love how you can break the game near the end, if you bring a good combination of skills you can pretty much annihilate the final boss in 1 turn, I love game that allow you to do that with some thinking.

I decided not to comment at the time this video was uploaded but I love Devil Survivor so much. And a line you always say that blows me away is that the game is a 20-30 hour experience. In my first playthrough I spent 100 hours because I was so addicted to the fusion and story, only to go onto the Wiki and find out I missed an insane amount of content. I am very excited to replay it next year in New Game+ with a walkthrough.

I started playing Devil Survivor a few months ago, it was really cool, but for some reason, i left the game aside and never came back (probably because I was addicted to Persona and couldn't pay attention to anything else), And the more i researched other SMT games, the more my subconscious sent me back to Devil Survivor. Would really love to see DeSu3 as well. Probably not gonna happen, but would like a sequel game to the king of demon ending. Also, i personally like differentiating Devil Survivor 2 and Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker and not put them in the same bracket. I really enjoyed the expansion of the whole administrator system, and RB has some of my fav endings in Megaten.
