"A place to stay" is usually so awful that nobody wants to stay there. Shelters are a device by means of which the community soothes it's conscience by embracing the fantasy that the homeless have a path out of homelessness when, in reality, they don't. Homeless don't avoid shelters for no reason. Nobody wants to talk to them though and get to the root of the problem. They just want to stand in their ivory towers looking at the homeless through powerful binoculars while chatting amongst their fellow elitists in a self-affirming echo chamber of ignorance.
@Sean-ms8hx
@Sean-ms8hx 4 сағат бұрын
They avoid shelters because they have to be up and out at 7am and they can’t do drugs or drink in them. That’s the facts. I know because I use to be homeless. Then I put myself into rehab, got a job while I was in rehab and saved up enough to get a place when I left. I been clean and sober for 2 years I have a job and a place of my own after being homeless and strug out for 3 years.

I cannot walk or stand for longer than about 15-20 minutes. I’m slow so even a short walk is intimidating. I get run over, a perfect victim for criminals. There are no places to sit, not even on some train cars. People are lacking in empathy and common courtesy. Not one person gets up to give a seat, often not even the designated handicapped seats. I have to ask, plead. As for buses, the lifts don’t work and there are no benches at the bus stops. I’m SO glad I escaped in 2021.

That said, people in places like there will have to enforce their rights protected by law, aka, the Bill of Rights, and exercise them. In numbers and force. There's nowhere near enough cops or others to stop them. I would add one more factor: so-called 'managed care' in the insurance industry has played a huge part in putting the mentally ill on the street without adequate treatment. One reason people get discharged so quickly from psych hospitals is that their insurance company won't pay for treatment. I am an old person who has watched the mental health treatment system, including detoxes, hospitals, and halfway houses, get dismantled over the past few decades. it's been brutal and I am glad to be retired.

I live in NYC right now and just came back from Japan. My simple observation is that Asia generally has high trust societies where people don’t really need to be monitored heavily to act in a civilized manner, which begins from childhood. The other thing is that Americans are generally allergic to shame, which means there isn’t much embarrassment felt when they act in lawless ways. The contrast, seeing the politeness and tact embedded in the culture in Japan, makes it pretty simple to see why we Americans cannot have nice public resources. The general American exceptionalism nonsense selfishness culture here is also a factor.

The members of this demographic invariably reside in large cities; members of the same racial or economic groups in rural areas rarely exhibit this lack of character. Most small towns and cities, and especially rural America generally retains the hospitality that characterized the US half a century ago.
