I like a mayor who actually walks the streets, listens to the stories of residents, and enjoys the experiences of the commoner. It is looking like a hopeful new beginning.

That doesn't mean he supports the linear park plan. He probably only supports it being a permanent open street which is not good either but it at least allows local traffic unlike the linear park.

NYC has high population density, which makes it a GREAT place to be if there are walkable areas. Adding pleasant aspects within walking distance makes any neighborhood more desirable to live in, and thus raises everyone's property values. It's a win-win for the city and for the neighborhood people. Thank you to Mayor Adams for taking a good look at this example, which could improve many parts of the city.
@mapgar14792 жыл бұрын
Theres plenty of walable and bikable areas in New York City. 34th Avenue is a major collector and must be reopened to cars. The citizens of Jackson Heights want through traffic on 34th avenue not a linear park that serves no beneficial transportation purpose.
@TheRailLeaguer2 жыл бұрын
@@mapgar1479 That’s not true. 34th has been a low volume street and it must stay closed to cars. Majority of Jackson Heights residents want the linear park since transportation needs in the neighborhood are already covered.
@KJSvitko2 жыл бұрын
Cities need to be for people NOT CARS. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better.

@Cousin Dan The majority of NYers don't get around by car and not all who do are hauling heavy equipment. It's not 'woke' to expect the city to function for the *majority* of residents. And if you watched the video you'd realise plenty of people care about having a city that's safe for pedestrians and cyclists.

I really don’t understand what’s with the criticism on 34th Avenue. Yeah there are concerns about being inadequate, but seriously calling it dumb and not needed, and saying that cars need the space more? That’s insane. It is clear more streets like these are needed in nearly every area of the city. The more open non-car space for pedestrians, the better.

This is pretty cool. Hopefully more local shops and eateries are built in this area too. I hope this area doesn't have too restrictive zoning as well, that would cause problems.
@mapgar14792 жыл бұрын
The area is residential not commercial. The last thing Jackson Heights needs is street-vending.

@@mapgar1479 disagreed. I think this area should be mixed use. Commercial and residential should both be permitted.

Well done, NYC! Open spaces create a meeting point where people can interact, socialise, dine, exercise, enjoy nature...! Living in Middelburg, the Netherlands, I have easy access to the pedestrianised town centre that teems with joy--shops, cafés, historic sites, and restaurants. What nirvana!

There's sidewalks everywhere for people to walk. This takes up 26 Avenues and they have it closed 13 hours a day even if they are having a Parade nearby which means more closed off streets and more traffic. Also this is all on residential Avenues where people can't get dropped off in front of their homes if their building has garage parking then they may have to move a heavy barricade that may be to heavy for some ( and may also get dirty looks going into their parking that they pay for ).

@@marcelmoulin3335That is not a problem however the option for using streets for car travel needs to remain. I recommend superblocks where major streets like 34th Avenue and New York Highway 30A are used as through streets for all traffic but prioritizing non-private car modes while streets on the inside are used primarily by local traffic or any car traffic that would like to enjoy driving on the street as a "guest" while the street is used primarily for non-auto recreational traffic.
