As a past natural gas mechanic in the city, it was gas, it's just hard to say where it got the right mixture of gas and air. Gas explodes between 5 and 15% gas in air. So, it would have had to have been the perfect storm and have an ignition source. It's possible that there is a vault nearby or that it was a vault to begin with. Basically, a vault is the building's basement that extends and can extend out to the edge of the sidewalk. The only way for what happened to happen would be that. The gas and air mixture in the vault hit somewhere between 5-15% ignited and boom top of the vault which was directly under the sidewalk blew up. The reason more than likely that they are not claiming it to be gas is because it is the buildings responsibility to maintain the gas service after it hits the vault. So just to not blast the hotel for blowing up the sidewalk they are not saying anything definitive. And honestly if they really cared almost every gas service in NYC would be shut off for dangerous conditions. They will not do that. Everyone will freeze.

I am a certified Post Tension installer. Which most of your new concrete buildings have in them. I have taken 3 years of classes on these issues. No one knows that concrete has a life expectancy. All these buildings are pushing it even with the maintenance most owners claim to have done. You think the era of buildings falling apart built a hundred years ago is bad. Wait until the buildings from the 2008-now era start aging. Everything is budget built. It's actually terrifying how cheaply these buildings are built. I have sat in meetings for General Contractors. They will throw out tons of steel out of the structural integrity of the building to save thousands over the whole building. Lately I have seen buildings go up where we dont even understand how they stand after they are built. Its budget engineering on steroids. The craziest part is that the Cities inspectors/regulators have no clue on what they are looking at. Like legit you can not install half of the floors steel/cables and they will okay it. All the while they will complain that spacers for the rebar/cables aren't 4ft on center. I swear we will see more major collapses in the next 20-25 years than ever before. Just for a few reasons. 1) all the buildings 50-75 years old are coming to their life expectancy and it cost more to maintain it than rebuild. Most will let the building decay because of the costs to fix things. If no one is paying attention that building should be uninhabitable but 99% of the time no one catches it. I personally know of a few projects I worked on and I cant say what ones. Some stadiums that were so old holding up 35-45k people the rebar in the concrete had deteriorated to the point that there was no rebar anymore. Just steel dust. When we demoed the concrete it was way worst than expected. Things like that happen all the time. Crazy part is they just put Band-Aids on it because the cost and time to fix it would be to much. Til this day I wont go to those stadiums anymore. 2)The new buildings are build so cheaply and the bottom dollar is all that matters. I have seen crap happen on these jobsites that get brushed under the rug that will affect the long term life of the building but the owner is none the wiser. What is going on these jobs is criminal. 99.9% GC's and owners dont even know about it. I have worked on high rises that the General has had to go back and fix 12 flights of stairs because they pour concrete in the stairs and never connected them to the building and 7 years later the stairs slipped down the stair shaft 3-4 inches. I have gone back and had to fix cables ( the structural integrity of the floors that replaces rebar) that a plumber or someone goes back in a building years later and drills through 10-12 cables which usually a floor will fail inspection if 2-3 cables arent stressed. I just wonder what happens to these buildings that are 25-30 years old and these cables are just popping or people are cutting. I have lost sleep about this at night before. If it were me I would never live in a concrete building.

You're so right about it! I can confirm from the Subways point of view: 1. Engineer department is full of people without any idea of what's going on. I believe most of them have fake diplomas from their countries. It's very frustrating dealing with them 2. A lot of stations during "renovation" got covered issues with fake walls instead of fixing them first. 3. Some tunnels have huge chunks of concrete that fell off the ceiling on the side of the track, especially where tunnels are connecting to the under river tubes. Cones out of salt and hanging off the ceiling... And helmet won't save your life if those are going to fall on your head. 4. Lose plates and springs keep falling off elevated structures on the regular basis. 5. Wood ties are totally rotten and turned into dust at some locations. And the most scary part that some of those tracks are in daily passenger train use. I saw rotten wood ties last week right by the platform at 9th Ave D train (upper level) on the middle track. Yes, that express track is not in revenue use usually, but it's a backup track if any normal revenue tracks become unavailable. Also, work trains use it regularly. I can keep going for days...

Certain chemicals commonly found in soil, such as sulfur compounds, can react with corroded gas pipes and potentially lead to explosions. When a gas pipe corrodes, it can become weakened, making it more prone to reactions with substances in the soil. Sulfur compounds, for example, can react with the metal of the pipe, producing hydrogen sulfide gas, which is flammable and can create an explosive mixture in the right conditions. It's essential to be cautious and aware of the potential risks associated with corroded gas pipes and the chemicals present in the soil to prevent hazardous situations. Stay safe and handle corroded gas pipes with care to avoid any potential dangers.

A somewhat off-topic response: In the days of George Washington, Manhattan and all the rest of NYC was mostly wilderness and trees -- complete with RIVERS and STREAMS -- I think there were 4 major streams just in lower Manhattan, plus various other natural water channels. Those water channels were all essentially paved right over and land flattened and leveled nearly everywhere. BUT mother nature and the forces of gravity and WATER can and will find those water channels if and when they need them. Meanwhile, water that engineers and experts believe they have diverted properly somehow finds itself flowing where IT wants to go and not where humans think it should go.

Actual infrastructure maintenance is expensive, and doesn't create amazing headlines when done properly, so big government has incentive to delay infrastructure maintenance until something goes wrong, because they those sexy headlines are available. Big government doesn't care if it costs many times more, because it can be an excuse to raise taxes as well. Double win from big governments point of view. This is why big cities almost always start falling apart. No politician wants his or her name associated with preventions of issue, they want to solve issues, but that means there have to be actual issues.

Native New Yorker gere. The cast iron pipes date to the mid to late 19th century, when it was a celebrated, new, cheaper type of material that could be shaped. The problem is that the structure of cast iron makes it brittle, which gets worse as it ages. So any microscopic cracks that start, along with knocks & dings, and age, make it susceptible to breakage from any kind of hard hit or pressure. If you have a fissure that starts on the outside, the pipe will continue to hold until it gets down to the very thinHest point. When it gets to be less holding ability than can contain the gas pressure, it will explode. Problem is no one wants "their" sidewalk torn up. It's the same with the water main. The one in Manhattan dates roughly to around 1900. It's made of brick and is under one of the streets. They engineered an unusual shape that makes it strong. Unfortunately brick wears out by crumbling. One of these days it'll collapse from being just brick dust. Are you still a realtor?
