NYC Subway: IND 6th Ave Line

This film shows a bit of the IND Sixth Avenue Line, which runs mostly under 6th Avenue in Manhattan.
Completed in 1940, it is today served by (F) and (M) local trains as well as (B) and (D) express trains.
We explore several stations of this line, in particular 23rd Street, 34th Street-Herald Square, 42nd Street-Bryant Park, 7th Avenue, and 59th Street-Columbus Circle. Technically, 59th Street belongs to the IND Eighth Avenue Line; (B) and (D) services merge here with (A) and (C) services.
At 23rd Street and 42nd Street-Bryant Park the film also shows a few scenes from above ground, to get an idea of the neighborhood.

It should have been pointed out at 23rd St. that what lay on the other side of the wall is PATH. . . . and that the 6AV express tracks run beneath.

when i went there, there was an R68 D train. we were racing. the D train vs. the F train.but it was a tie.

i was just in new york,in the last full day there i went to coney island,the F train took forever because a G train was apparently broken just in front of it...after church avenue the it didnt stop anymore.thankfully in my trip back it did not stop on any signalling.gotta say,though,the stations in brooklyn are so deserted,there was nobody in the train except me and my family from kings highway to coney island and even before there were very few people.

Next time; if you go to Coney Island, take the D. It runs express under northern Brooklyn. And south of 36 St, it's local but it doesn't share track with any other subway services.

Nice video and for 42nd street Bryant Park it can also use the IRT name which is 5th ave 7 train stop. 4:47 should be corrected as 7,B,D,F & M trains since 42nd street Bryant Park is actually a transfer stop to the 7 train which is useful for F & M train passengers going to Queens if there were delays on 63rd 59th street IRT east side line & 53rd street tunnel IRT 51st street east side line

There used to be old trains with automated voices, called the R110A and R110B. They were introduced in the early 90's, but then they were taken out of service in the early 2000's due to mechanical problems, which led the R142's, R142A's, and R143's to take over, as well as the R160's and R188's later on. The R179's and R211's may do the same thing too.

R46 and R160 stock have very loud HVAC compared to the rest of the B Division equipment. On the A Division, the R142 (not R142A) is really loud.

What's the point of the 34th station being so long when they don't reach the whole station (trains)?

Most major lines in New York run ten-car trains, though the 7 line runs eleven cars on each train. The numbered lines run 51 foot-long cars, so most platforms need to be about 510 feet long. The lettered lines use either 60 or 75 foot cars, so a 600 foot platform will handle ten of the first or eight of the second. If a train uses only eight 60 foot cars, it will, of course, be 120 feet shorter.
