I just watched some footage of the same exact station filmed in 1986. What I can tell you from the visual differences is that America, New York in particular, is color void. Meaning that the color in our apparel has all but vanished. About 85-90% of those filmed are wearing black. It's highly prevalent in the city's culture. The '86 footage had the full color spectrum in it. People were wearing mostly every color EXCEPT BLACK.. Now, it's all you see. Sad that we are either trying to be nondescript or we have generally just lost our individual identities?!?
@claudiahansen49382 жыл бұрын
You're right! Also, cars of yesteryear had colors, green, yellow, orange, blue, red. Now only white, black, grey, beige and some reds or blues. We are being washed out of the pleasure to enjoy vivid colors.

I’m so confused, as a Brit our trains are simple we have the train name ( Northern Line , Victoria Line etc ) and it stops at every station until the last stop unless there’s branches and each have their own colour. Can someone pleas explain how ny subway works like what’s the point of the numbers and letters?
@insertnamehere02474 жыл бұрын
Also why do you not have names for some stations. In London we have names of every station but in ny you have it say “ 42nd Street “

@Siuz yeah that’s what I’m saying.. why do they name it after numbers rather than give it the name like we do in the UK
@metrofilmer88943 жыл бұрын
I can explain. There are 10 different colors used. The color of a route tells you which main line in Manhattan it belongs to. They are the following: Red(1)(2)(3)-Broadway-7th Avenue Green(4)(5)(6)-Lexington Avenue Purple(7)-Flushing Line-42nd Street Blue(A)(C)(E)-8th Avenue Orange(B)(D)(F)(M)-6th Avenue Lime Green(G)-Crosstown Brown(J)(Z)-Nassau Street Silver(L)-Canarsie Line-14th Street Yellow(N)(Q)(R)(W)-Broadway Grey(S)-Shuttle Lines Each of the lines that have a certain color run on the corresponding line. For example the 4 is green so it runs on Lexington Avenue. The 5 is also Green so it also runs on Lexington. The 3 however is Red so instead of running on Lexington, it runs on 7th Avenue.
@metrofilmer88943 жыл бұрын
The idea is one line covers a certain 1 or 2 branches for the main line and another covers another 1 or 2 branches. Along with that, New York used a 4 track model to improve efficiency. If a line is local, it will usually run on the outside tracks an stop at every station. If it’s express, it will run usually in the middle track(s) and will only stop at the main stations on the route and skip the smaller ones, which improves efficiency and capacity on the line

Since you seem to film something as particular as this in terms of location & time in the NYC Subway, I suggest you try filming the uptown platform on the B/D line at 145th Street between 6:40 PM & 7:30 PM during PM Rush Hours. Worst time to attempt to go from the Central Park West corridor to the Grand Concourse corridor. Also, perfect proof that they really need to extend the duration of Bronx-bound B service during PM rush hours. As it stands, it ends too early...

Not only new cars (we got new cars in the 70s & 80s too and it never stopped the graffiti rats from defacing those new cars), but today's coating is anti-graffiti, plus they're protecting the train yards much better as well. Offering stiffer fines and jail time doesn't hurt either.

I hope you don't mind an English reply. Yes, some of the stations in Manhattan and Queens have free WiFi (and also cell phone service). I think in Germany it's more difficult to provide free WiFi service because of legal reasons (the provider is made responsible for illegal activities of the users). I don't use a tripod, but when I film with my DSLR camera, I prefer to use a monopod with a fluid video head (when permitting). This allows for the smooth panning you can for example see in the 125th street video. However, I shot this film solely on an iPhone 6+, which has really great in-lens image stabilization, so you would just need some calm hands. :-)

Roughly 475 stations in the system, not counting Staten Island Rapid Transit, or PATH. . . Tens of thousands of gates to install and maintain. Frankly, there are better things they can spend money on, which is why it's likely that the usual mismanagement and corruption of the MTA will lead them to try it. I hope not!
