My first time I stayed in Midtown. I wanted to do touristy things, so it was close to a lot of places. If you want to do touristy things, stay in Manhattan. It makes it easier to explore the neighborhoods. Next time I'm staying in East Village because I liked lower Manhattan. I'd like to stay in Brooklyn in the future. It depends what you're looking for.
