Put down the face mill and step outside the box! Here are 10 different ways to face parts--everything from practical methods that mitigate tram error to the aesthetically pleasing (albeit inefficient). Let's talk in depth about the benefits, drawbacks, tips, and tricks of each method as it relates to Fusion 360 CAM, tooling, and the machine. Have you experimented with different toolpaths? Let us know in the comments below!

I just used contour on some castings where I needed to control how close I got to the workholding in the 5-axis. The absolute edge of the cleaned up surface has a wide open tolerance, but the placement in the workholding meant I couldn't drive the toolpath off the modeled face. So I used contour and a sketched containment boundary to face the area while avoiding the vise jaws by about 0.015".

@7:00 if you came in with a 4" shell mill would fusion be smart enough to go around the cylinder sticking above the face?

I have my part on the edge of my stock which is modeled in a 6” Kurt vise on my Bridgeport mill. I’d like to use milling both ways at multiple depths with a finishing path but have my enter point on all depths at the edge of the stock! I can get the first depth cut to enter where I want but the rest of the depths enter from the other side which it cuts in from the top of the stock not the side! Am I stuck with climb milling to achieve this?

Aloha John I have a tricky setup problem. I need to make two long t-nut type slides for a bandsaw fixture. My only machine is a Tormach PCNC440 and the part is 23" long. In my mind this means refixturing the material at least three times along the x axis. The stock is only 3/8 thick and finish width is less than 1" . I'm trying to decide if soft jaws (4" Tormach Vise) or fixture plate with something like Mitee Bite parts or even Mitee Bite to tee slots. My Job budget is small as it's for a Non-Profit.

Completely outside of my normal experience, so excuse my ignorance in the question, but where "Morph" can blend 2 other styles, does that mean any 2? Specifically, I'm curious about blending Spiral and 3D Adaptive... What'd that end up looking like?
@parkermusselman9824
@parkermusselman9824 4 жыл бұрын
Any tips on avoiding that center sliver in Adaptive? I get it almost always. I've tried "adding" negative radial stock to leave, but no success.

I would assume the only way is to "lie" to the software that the tool is a smaller diameter. Not exactly good practice lol but hey. Masertcam has that same problem so I would just do a do a helical bore on center big enough to cover cusp.

Went to ProvenCut and looks like a great resource. I did find one small issue with the page, when navigating via mobile browser, the HTML gets pretty messed up and bounding boxes and tables are a bit of a mess. Changing to desktop version fixes it, so looks to be a mobile only browser formatting issue. Anyway, you'll see a subscription from me shortly! Great idea 👍

So when you used 2D contour isn 't it basically the Same as 2D face with 90°?
@williamclark77

John, I think we all know the best way to face is to take your part over to the belt sander. That is how all the professionals do it.

OK. You need to grind those test pieces flat on each side, bond them together and hang it on a wall. I've seen a lot less beautiful pieces passed for art.
