Building a Simple, Nice looking Coolant Guard for our Okamoto Grinder

The splash guard that came with our Okamoto Surface Grinder wasn't high enough to stop coolant from splashing all over the machine and the floor. A few pieces of acrylic from SendCutSend, a cheap linear rail, and some 3D printed parts was answer!

A neat trick for getting hot glue off is isopropyl alcohol.

3M VHB tape is a more permanent substitute for hot glue. You'll would to do a little research to get the best variety for the application, but IME even a sub-optimal VHB tape is pretty darn good. Also, you could probably 3D print a step with an "H" cross-section for the sides. One channel would fit over the edge of the clear panel and the other over the edge of the metal splash guard.

I'd bend up some sheet metal to cover the rail so swarf doesn't gum up the sliders.

Hi John I Had the same problem with my Mattison's. the new splash guard needs to fit inside your existing guard. We made one and it simply had bolt on clips that attach only to the new guard and then the clips simply stab over the existing guard ledge. Works really good no holes in your original grinder and just simply lift off after you finish your grind. everything flows back to the original compartment.

I think it would be better to have the linear rails mounted on the outside of the grinding environment, they will last longer.

Curious assume there is a factory back guard or is that an open issue? Hairball thought what if you had a vertical drape on a horizontal rod that attaches to the existing guards this would give you full access to the chuck, the drape bottom just lays there in the down position to load/inspect, simply raise and clip/lock in the up position

did you get the guards made of acrylic or PC? acrylic does not like modern imusion coolants (probably the chlorinated parafins they use)

What is PC? I'm looking to replace some plastic guards on a machine and would like something that resists fogging with coolant.

Did you miss the part where he talked about the $11,000 price for a cover? More importantly the 6 month lead time? Likely needed the grinder for jobs NOW not in 6 months from now.

@@SELG88 I'm telling you when $11,000 is at stake you aren't gonna get a simple or cheap solution. That's why VW, Mercedes and BMW locked down their computer systems in their car. Because then they can charge you more money to fix it. Money is a hell of a motivator.
