They're taking too much. That's why they don't show exactly how much of it is tested. Doesn't take an entire tube.

More tests are run on more tubes. For example, PTINR can only be run in blue tubes and CBC only on lavender tubes.

There's a lot of other steps missing. How do patients know how much of the blood is actually being used?
@lgstar3363 Жыл бұрын
Exactly and she never explains what is done with remaining blood if any. Is it discarded??
@rattateo8 ай бұрын
@@lgstar3363 I'm a MLS in a hospital lab. We store the remaining sample for 3, 7, or 30 days depending on the tube type. Other hospitals may use slightly different policies on storage times, but we all store at minimum according to regulatory/accrediting body requirements. That time allows for us to perform additional testing in case the doctor orders more tests after the initial tests are run. After that the tubes are discarded in biohazard waste which is ultimately incinerated.

cool n all but i want to see what's happening during the "appropriate testing"
@jotusmas40382 ай бұрын
Nowadays, a lot of the testing is done on automatic instruments, especially in larger labs. The techs and scientists will review results and verify them or go further in testing. For the appropriate testing, there are many different institutions that survey labs and hospitals to make sure the labs and hospitals are doing appropriate testing. One of the bigger institutions is the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Which will routinely send labs survey testing along with every two years an inspection.

Furthering on the subject, medical labs will keep blood for a certain about of time. Each lab is different, but there are stability timeframes per test ordered. Yes, the labs can run different tests, but the billing for those tests have to be medically relevant.

If tubes are mixed up, it is most likely a result of what we call pre-analytical error (an error whose root cause occurred before actual testing). Particularly clerical error (mislabeled specimen) or the person drawing the blood failed to positively identify the patient at the time of collection.
