Fascinating discussions around 19:00 on the current Gorshey controversy. Impressive guest with his knowledge and insights on Gorshey which I agree completely. More so that his day job is in the legal field, working in the justice and human rights. One of your best episodes and great discussions, Bhuchung la. Good job.

Well said..PERIOD..anyone criticizing should come up with solution and get involved but not ridicule Gorshey lovers...like in Toronto we encourage people to bring their choice of songs and get involved 😂 and celebrate Lhakar Gorshey. We the youngster love Songs from Tibet especially well Choreographed modern updated songs with jaw dropping lyrics despite in CHINESE OCCUPATION...learn and look into the lyrics ..

One definition of dance; the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself. There should not be any set standard of how one should raise one’s arm or tap the feet unless it is a classical dance like Indian classical dances or the Tibetan Opera dance or anther world classical dance or a special performance choreographed by the choreographer. So true that many dances are” inspired rather than infused “ from a different culture. The objective of a dance is to be Happy. No body wants others not to be happy.

My parents born in Gawa region of Kham and me in exile. They and other Phayul chikpa used to dance gorshey of our own region during gatherings in 90's.Sadly most of them have passed away now. And as I grew older, i always wondered why the dances of our region are not performed by Tipa or other schools.

Why we are taking this simple discussion of Lhakar Gorshey to another level, almost to the point of cholka debate, which is un necessary and uncalled for? Your panelist is absolutely right in his own perspective since he was talking from the point of culture that he experienced. He was born and grew up in Tibet after the culture revolution and he experienced our culture that has a strong Chinese influence. We have a Tibetan culture pre-1959, which China spent billions of dollar to wipe our distinct Tibetan identity to get us assimilated under their main stream Chinese culture. Why China initiated their propaganda through various Confucius institute established all over the western world? How Tibetan performers brought in by China on the global platform were presented? That culture was not our culture! China instead of integrating Tibetan culture as a distinct Tibetan identity, they are tying everything possible means to assimilate our culture into their main stream culture to wipe our unique identity completely from the picture. No body is saying Lhakar movement is bad; but all they are requesting is to make little effort to make it closer to our distinct identity. No one is asking not to dance Kham/Amdo dance; we achieved this far in uniting all of us together under the umbrella of Lhakar movement, why not struggle little harder to get all us closer to our root. Why we are making it easier for the Chinese to wipe our distinct identity? Do some more research on our culture pre 1959, so that we will have a better perspective! Why not inviting former Tibetan artist from TIPA Gen Samten la on your platform so that his message will not get misinterpreted? Otherwise, it is concerning that this issue will going to turn into another cholka fight that we experienced not that long ago. Please don't give our adversary a chance to take advantage of us. Be positive and be proud of your root, integrate, but don’t assimilate. Free Tibet.

Gorshey dance, in Tibetan Culture, is a group dance popular in rural Tibet. This dance is usually performed on the open ground and can go on for long. It consists of men and women dancing together in a circle. This particular form of dance has two parts: singing, and dancing. It is an agile and vigorous dance. Men and women stand in two separate circles and sing in rotation while swaying and stamping their feet. The tempo, in the beginning, is slow and as the song progresses the tempo speeds up. They performers conclude their singing by shouting “Ya!” Shey (dance), in Tibetan Culture, is accompanied by a stringed instrument.

I’d rather like to hear from elderly Cholka Sum than from younger generations on authenticity of these latest dance steps especially of flying arms and jutting of butts! 🥰
@Pedonisashortiebtw

I am one of those who witnessed those dances in exile during 90's by authentic Khampa people. Most of them were from pre-1959 era. They danced during the picnics or gatherings. We have small community in exile(nepal). Sadly all of them have passed away now. Flying arms energetically are usually done at the last as the conclusions n to show he or she stored stamina and flexibility. And people applauding in the end. Wearing long sleeves and small bells hanged on the shoe(by men on the right side) are our authentic attire during dances. Actually I felt happy when i saw new generation dancing on those steps. It felt like finally our dances are being explored by new generations . I hope it continues so that every one knows that we are cholkha tsum.
