Tony handles Andy perfectly here. He knows Andy hates change, and he's already pissed off that Danny is dead, AND he doesn't like Clark Sr. So rather than forcing Andy to accept change right now, he tells Andy he needs him, that the squad needs him, and lets him partner with Connie, and take Clark Jr. day to day. He's letting Andy feel like he has some control over something, at a time when Andy feels like he's lost control of everything.

Esai Morales played Rodriguez for 66 episodes. He asked Fancy about Andy at the outset. Now, he knows what Andy means to the squad. He's the linchpin. You feel for John, having the sins of the father on your head. Stay tuned!

I really like how Rodriquez knows how to let Andy have his run and when to pull him in. Esai Morales did a fantastic job of showing how a true leader works with his people to get their best efforts.

Love how both Connie and Irvin said what needed to be said with a glare at Andy knowing he wasn't handling Danny's death and the change that came from it. I also like how Andy said in so many words "How many times this show going to have a character named John?" 🤣

I mean John is one of the most common names out there, I should know when I have another common name. Its not like they're introducing a second Baldwin character.

It has been said that God places some people to do the heavy lifting in the world. They get the hard jobs.... are who you count on when the chips are down. They are not always the most pleasant or likeable. It would appear the character of Andy was written in that style or thought.

That's true. I didn't even think about that. Even his locker room speech to Danny about all he'd lost and almost lost didn't include Kelly.

I do like that for as much as this show was about Andy's growth and redemption, they never hesitated to show that he was still a stubborn prick. He got more reasonable as the show progressed and more willing to acknowledge when he was wrong (in his own way) but as Eddie Gibson said, he was as huggable as a porcupine.

By this point, John Irvin had also been a regular character for several years. I guess the show made it a point that names like John are very common, and realistically, there's bound to be more than one in the same space very often. Most shows avoid that for fear of viewer confusion, but NYPD Blue seemed to embrace it as a fact of life.
